DoggyDaddy's Dailies 11/29/14

 
 
I'm sure this is how Geno feels about his team right about now. But the good news is there is a lot of time left for a leader to emerge. Maybe (hopefully) even more than one. I think there are four great candidates. Jefferson, KML, Tuck and Stewart. If she wasn't a freshman I might add Nurse but while she has those intangibles, I don't think she would push for that role out of respect for the upper classmen.
My personal vote goes to Tuck. Yes, she is only a red shirt sophomore but she has been there 3 years and just seems to have the personality on the court to take over that role. We will see as the season progresses.

College of Charleston Game Preview



UCONN vs College of Charleston

Records UConn 2-1, College of Charleston 0-4.

Overview
Three days of basketball and three days in warm weather. I'm so jealous of the team and fans that are enjoying Ft. Meyers. A shout out to my friend JD. And I know that my buddy DannyK will be cheering and snapping some great pics. I'll be posting them later.

Candice Jackson is in her first season as the head coach at Charleston. Jackson was an assistant coach at Duke in each of the last three seasons. It doesn't help much as Duke was always on the short end of a good whuppin'. They are struggling so far this year with losses to Kennesaw State, UNC Greensboro, Eastern Carolina and George Mason. UConn is the last team they need to see.

UConn is coming into this game with a chip still on their shoulder. All of a sudden the pundits and fans are doubting them. I'm thinking they are relishing this role and will use it coming into the Notre Dame game next weekend. Tuck and Nurse will continue to build on their last performance and Stokes will look to break out with a game like she had in the two exhibition games.

As always, I list the players that are part of the regular rotation.



UConn Starters
 

11 Kia Nurse 6' Freshman Guard

Kia was put into the starting lineup last game and she will never be out of it. 22 points on 4-4 3 pointers was amazing to see from this mature young woman.

4 Moriah Jefferson 5'7" Junior Guard

Jefferson had a nice  game against Creighton, but I'm sure she feels she can do more. We haven't seen the disruptive force on defense yet. But we will. Hopefully tonight.

41 Kiah Stokes 6'3"  Senior Center

Kiah, we need you!!!! I just haven't seen the aggressive play we need to see from Stokes. She certainly has the talent. Does she have the will? I believe she does. 7 ppg and 7 rpg are good. But the team could use a few more of each.

23 Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis 5'11" Senior Forward

Missed the last game with the flu. I'm sure she will be looking to make up for a poor performance against Stanford.

30 Breanna Stewart 6'4" Junior Forward

I  guess if you don't miss a shot (10-10), or a 3 pointer (3-3), or a FT (2-2) and still manage to have 4 assists you had a good game. She was very upset with the team after the Stanford game. Looks to me she is saying to her teammates, jump on board the TBS express.

UConn Bench

3 Morgan Tuck 6'2" Sophomore Forward


Morgan started for the sick KML and had a great game against Creighton. She is really showing her leadership skills. One she slows down a little in the paint her poor shooting percentage will increase.

12 Saniya Chong 5'8" Sophomore Guard

Move to coming off the bench didn't sit well with Chong's game against Creighton going o-fer all her shots. I'm looking for a nice bounce back game from Saniya

15 Gabby Williams 5'11" Freshman Guard

Gabby played really well against Creighton. Well enough to be part of the regular rotation. We will see that for the rest of the season. She is still looking for her first assist of the season.

Final Analysis
 
In the first game of the Gulf Coast Classic, UConn will look to build on a better effort against Creighton. This game will not be close. Just think Creighton without the 3 point shooters. There is a reason Charleston is 0-4. They don't shoot well, they don't defend well. They are not particularly tall or quick. They don't take care of the ball. Did I leave anything out? Look for UConn to get a good run in, work on some defensive help schemes and overall finish the game healthy. A fifty-sixty point win is not out of the question.

DoggyDaddy's Dailies - 11/28/14

Oy, I'm so full!!!!



Wow, what a great Thanksgiving. My son-in-law, the sous chef, made an incredible meal. Turkey, of course, stuffing, mashed potatoes, roasted squash, orange zest green beans, home made dinner rolls, fantastic gravy, pumpkin pie and sour cream apple pie. I'm sure more that I can't remember due to overeating.
 
Yesterday there were two big American Conference games.
 
East Carolina played a very good second half against #22 Syracuse ourscoring the Orange 31-22. The bad news is they lost the first half by 20. It wasn't a bad effort at all for the Lady Pirates against a ranked team. They never game up.  
 
South Florida defeated Oklahoma 83-68, a perennial top 25 team and a power conference team. A great win for USF and it was never a close game. They will play Illinois tomorrow night, a team that just upset #9 Kentucky, and then USF plays Kentucky the next night.    
 
So 1-1 is a very good night for the much maligned AAC.    
 
There has always been this big debate about how the weak conference would impact UConn's ability to get the top recruits like they have over the many years they have been so successful. Players want a conference challenge, opposing coaches won't play them OOC, all the other recruits are going to power conference to play with their friends....blah, blah, blah. I doesn't seem to matter that there is a possibility that AAC teams can improve. It sure looks like it so far this season.
 
Since the announcement of the AAC being created and UConn going to that conference, UConn has recruited Nurse,Williams, Edwards, Samuelson, Boykin and Collier. They also have a top transfer in Butler. Now, they recently received verbal commitments from  Irwin and Dangerfield. Does anyone think that as long as Geno is there, there won't be more coming?
          
UConn is still in the mix for more 2016 recruits and we know that Andra Espinoza-Hunter, who played with Chong before transferring to Blair Academy where she played with Sadie Edwards is a big UConn lean. They are still working hard to get Megan Walker, mega-superstar from the 2017 class.  
 
The argument mostly came from fans of schools from power conference hoping for a slow demise of the UConn women's basketball program. That ain't happening. Not for a LONG time.

DoggyDaddy's Thanksgiving Dailies 11/27/14

 
So, I didn't think I would have anything to talk about the night before Thanksgiving. No big matchups going on. Only one top ten team playing. Well, I was WRONG. In a big way.

Tennessee played Chattanooga on the road. I'm sure that Tennessee fans expected a fairly easy win considering that Chattanooga lost to Notre Dame earlier this year 88-53. No, I didn't mistype. A 35 point loss. 
 
The Lady Mocs slowly but surely build a 16 point halftime lead by playing great defense and Tennessee playing even worse defense than UConn did against Stanford. The Lady Vols allowed Chattanooga to shoot over 50% of the game. The Tennessee offense looked like they were searching for someone to take over. Jasmine Jones did her best, but Tennessee looked like they could have used the oft maligned Meghan Simmons. They don't lose this game with her just like UConn could have used Dolson and Hartley against Stanford.

The game had a few ties in the last minute as Tennessee used a full court press to get some easy baskets to slowly close the gap. But when it came down to the tying shot, Jones took a jumper, not her best shot. If that was what Warlick set up it was a lousy job of coaching. 

UConn fans are pretty tough on their team after a loss, or even after a game they deem was too close. But Tennessee fans take the cake. Of course I can't link The Summit. But I'm sure their heads are exploding. Here is the link to VolNation. Holly is getting roasted. It's not pretty.     

This might be a tough year for Tennessee if Harrison doesn't come back quickly with games against Notre Dame, Stanford and conference foes South Carolina, Texas A&M, Kentucky.

Two interesting games today for UConn fans. #22 Syracuse (3-0) vs East Carolina (4-0) and Oklahoma (3-0) vs South Florida (3-1).

With the lack of respect for the American Conference, good showings by the few decent teams are important for UConn's RPI.

This Week in WCBB, 11/26/14

 
 
I want to thank the administrators of The Boneyard for posting the link to my Blog in the permanent link with all the other Blogs pinned at the top of the Women's Basketball board. Please look there for the link or bookmark this address for future reference.

Welcome to my weekly look at the world of WCBB. I was able to get in one more round of golf Tuesdeay (I'll brag, a 79 at Wintonbury Hills) before Connecticut get's hit with the first snowstorm of the season just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Notre Dame and South Carolina  

The new coaches poll is out. Notre Dame moves into the top spot with South Carolina moving into 2nd.and UConn climbed to third. Stanford dropped to fourth after losing to Texas.

Three points separate Notre Dame and South Carolina Both with 14 first place votes. Talk about evenly split!! Just like last week, four teams with first place votes. But this time Texas (who only jumped from 9-13) garnered 2 first place votes, as did UConn.

Let's take a look at the top ten week in review. I'm using the coaches poll as it's the most current.


 
    

#1 Notre Dame

Last Week: @ Michigan State W 71-63, vs Chattanooga W 88-53,
vs Holy Cross W 104-29, vs Quinnipiac W 112-52

Leading Scorer Jewell Loyd - 19.8
Leading Rebounder Taya Reimer - 6.3
Leading Assists Lindsay Allen - 4.3
 Notre Dame moves up to take over the top spot after the Stanford loss to Texas. Loyd had 28 points, 11 rebounds against Michigan State in a closer than expected game. Three easy games followed and Notre Dame handled them well. Turner is the real deal. She had some great games this week and is second in scoring at 16.7 per game. Notre Dame is still the same terrific passing team and is showed in all four games. December 6th against UConn tell us a lot more about this years edition of Notre Dame.  
 
#2 South Carolina

Last Week: vs Clemson W 99-41, vs San Diego State W 89-38
 
Leading Scorer Tiffany Mitchell - 17.7
Leading Rebounder Alana Coates - 9.2
Leading Assists Tiffany Mitchell - 4.0
 
 South Carolina had an excellent week against two overmatched opponents.  I don't care who you play against, Mitchell going 9-10 on three's is amazing. Wilson appears to enjoy coming off the bench. She is thriving there scoring 33 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for the week. The other two impact freshman Cuevas and White both had an excellent week. They got extended minutes and looked more and more comfortable. This really bodes well for SC going forward. Alana Coates continues to be a handful both on the boards and defensively. Don't give her low post position. 
 
 
#3 UCONN

Last Week vs Creighton W 96-60
 
Leading Scorer Breanna Stewart, KML - 21
Leading Rebounder Breanna Stewart - 8.7
Leading Assists Moriah Jefferson - 6.3

UConn had a great bounce back against a tough Creighton team. Stewart found perfection, going 10-10. KML didn't play, in fact not only didn't she dress for the game, she stayed home resting from a bad case of the flu. I'm pretty sure that this impacted her performance against Stanford. But she did play 45 minutes, showing true grit. Nurse was fantastic against Creighton. I think it's going to be a three way battle for FOY with Nurse, Wilson and Turner.

UConn travels to Florida for a weekend tournament where the sun and fun will take a back seat to fine turning the team. Looks like KML will be back in the line-up.



#4 STANFORD

Last Week: vs Texas L 87-81,  @ New Mexico W 70-65
 
Leading Scorer Lili Thompson - 26.0
Leading Rebounder Kaylee Johnson - 13.0
Leading Assists Amber Orrange - 4.0
When the rollercoaster hit the turn the Stanford players were still excited from the ride with the win over UConn when that stomach turning big downhill called Texas took their breath away. After a great overtime win against UConn, an agonizing home winning streak ending loss dropped Stanford from the top spot before they could even enjoy it. And it looked like there was still a hangover from those tough 2 games in the close New Mexico game where they were down a point with 30 seconds left. I think there are a lot of pundits scratching their heads on how good Stanford really is.
 

#5 Tennessee
 
Last Week: vs Winthrop W 81-48, vs Tenn St W 97-46

Leading Scorer Nia Moore - 20.8
Leading Rebounder Nia Moore - 9.5
Leading Assists Jordan Reynolds - 5.7
Nia Moore? Wow...I'm sure that even most Lady Vol fans did not expect this type of performance from the 6'3" junior. With Harrison out she has been a force in the middle. She reminds me of DeWanna Bonner, physically long with arms that go on forever. Like most of the top ten teams, Tennessee is still waiting to play a challenging team. Tennessee is playing everyone on the roster so far. It will be interesting to see who is in the shorter rotation against good teams.

#6 Texas A&M


Last Week: vs Rice W 76-55, PV A&M W 59-41

Leading Scorer Courtney Walker - 18.0
Leading Rebounder Achiri Ade - 8.7
Leading Assists Jordan Jones - 5.6
Well, so far it's the Courtney Walker show. The next highest scorer after her is at 8.6 per game. For the 6th ranked team in the country, they had two pedestrian wins over rather weak teams. They really need the other Courtney to be reinstated.

#7 Duke

Last Week: @ Old Dominion W 82-66, vs Marquette W 83-51, vs Buffalo W 88-54

Leading Scorer Elizabeth Williams - 16.3
Leading Rebounder Rebecca Greenwell - 10.3
Leading Assists Kai'la Johnson - 6.0
 
Duke has been impressive so far this season. This week was no exception. Williams has played really well in the face of her critics, who scoffed at her first team AA selection averaging close to a double double. Greenwell IS averaging a double double. Her scoring is not a surprise, but her rebounding has been. Johnson has done a good job at the point, but her experience is not at that position, a potential problem once Duke plays it's tougher games.


#8 Maryland

Last Week: vs South Florida W 85-67, @ G. Washington W 75-65,  vs Loyola (MD) W 65-43

Leading Scorer Lexi Brown - 21
Leading Rebounder Brionna Jones - 6.4
Leading Assists Lauren Mincy - 3.6
Maryland went 3-0 this week but is wasn't easy. They were down at the half to GW before pulling away in the second half. They had a different star in the USF and GW games. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 25 against South Florida, Mincy had 23 against GW. But they seem to be struggling some on the offensive end.

#9 Texas

Last Week: @ Stanford W 87-81, @ UCLA W 75-65

Leading Scorer Kelsey Lang - 12.7
Leading Rebounder Nneka Enemkpali - 8.3
Leading Assists Empress Davenport - 2.7
 
What a great week for the Texas program in their West Coast swing. Beating the #1 team is always a great accomplishment but doing it on the road in a tough place like Maples is doubly tougher. They followed that up with a solid win against a disappointing UCLA team.

They really spread out the scoring on this team with 4 players averaging double figures and one more averaging 9.3. Texas was really tough on the boards this week with 45 against Stanford and 50 against UCLA. Their big front court will do them well this season. It's good to have them in the national scene again.


#10 Kentucky

Last Week: vs Morehead State W 91-62,
@ Cent Michigan W 71-68

Leading Scorer Jennifer O'Neill- 18.8
Leading Rebounder Azia Bishop - 8.5
Leading Assists Makayla Epps - 3.3
 
Probably the least impressive win for a top ten team was Kentucky against Central Michigan. Up big, Kentucky was outscored by 16 in the second half before finally holding off the Chippewas. O'Neill has been a terrific leader and score and led them with 32 points in the two games.
 

 
Bria Smith of Louisville had 22 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, 4 steals against Western Kentucky!

Rutgers is still undefeated and believe it or not SCORING. I really like this team.

The AAC has 4 teams playing well in the early season games.

Looking forward to seeing if they can compete for an NCAA tourney spot.

Geno is working his magic motivation skills on the team. Most undisciplined team in 30 years...lol.
