DoggyDaddy's Dailies 11/6/16

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                ****************************************************************************

So, it's been a long weekend. I did some work for my catering buddie which included driving to Norwalk, loading and unloading all the food for the Saturday event, saying over at the Norwalk INN where the ceilings were falling apart and the bed was like sleeping on an inverted bowl with a big hump in the middle.

Of course, my sciatica kicked in and I struggled thought the event. Thank goodness for a great staff!

My sciatica is flaring and I'm laying on an icepack. Fun!

My point is that I might not make it to the game tomorrow to give you my up close and personal analysis of the game. But.........I will watch on my laptop if I can't make it.

SO, have no fear, fellow UConn addicts! I will still boor you with my words.

****************************************************************************

Here are a few things I'll be looking for in Sunday's exhibition game.

- Will Geno go with the same starting line-up? I'm guess yes, but I haven't been at their practices to know it anything has changed.

- Samuelson came out firing. Like every shot was her last one ever. I'm hoping she plays a little slower. She led the team in scoring, but she could be more efficient.

- I really want to see that incredible athlete Gabby Williams in person again!

- I'm hoping we see another solid game from Chong. Her impact to the team is so important.

- Will Dangerfield see more minutes?

- Kyle Irwin had a terrific first game. I have a nice article linked in the UConn section. Check it out! I think she will be a big surprise to some. But not to me.

I am so looking forward to writing my first pre-game analysis!! Florida State!!!!

So, the big question on Lady Vol message board?

"If healthy and all players eligible, could this team have won a NC?? "

And the answer is????

Without a doubt they would win it!

Harrison/Dolson - Harrison: Harrison IMO would run circles around Dolson. Although Dolson was more physical, the SEC would have prepared her well for that match up. Dolson wouldn't be able stay in the lane and be a shot blocking presence with Harrison's range as well.

Well, not really. So many things wrong with this statement. I agree that Harrison was a terrific player when healthy. But Dolson was better in college and has proven that with her play in the WNBA. Just look at the stats. It's not even close.

Graves/Stewart - Stewart: Everyone knew the scouting report on Stewart in her early years was to be physical....this would be an interesting match up. Slight edge to Stewart because of her height and range but I think Bashaara could most definitely hold her own.

Yeah, her first 20-25 games she might has struggled with the physical play. But after that? Not so much. You are talking about a 4 time Final Four MVP and you think Graves would hold her own? Yeah, she would hold her own shorts as she was out of breath chasing Stewart.

Burdick/Tuck - Tuck: I gave this to Tuck only because she was one of my favorite college players ever! She was quicker than Burdick and could finish around the basket a little better than Burdick.

Burdick was no where near the player Tuck was in college. Nice of you to give her that matchup because you like her.

DeShields/KML - DeShields: A healthy DeShields would be a no-brainer here. KML had the eye of the Tiger when it came to shooting but I gave the advantage to DD because of her athleticism and height at this position.

It's funny how Lady Vol fans equate athleticism with  basketball talent.

Ariel/Hartley - Hartley: Brian was an AA waiting to happen. Ariel would have had a hard time keeping up with her with her mediocre defense. The only thing that Ariel could help us with in this match up would be her outside shooting. It'll allow Harrison more room to dominate Dolson. N

No, Hartley WAS an AA. Hartley would have driven by Massengale at will. Every time.
They win 3 out of the starting 5 positions IMO, however I think our bench and depth on this team would be the difference maker

This Tennessee fan goes on to extoll the virtues of the bench. Players that have really not played that well. I won't boor you with that. But here is UConn's bench in that year.

Brianna Banks
Saniya Chong
Moriah Jefferson
Kiah Stokes

But here is the biggest different - Geno vs Holly.

So Charlie SECreme has put out his ridiculously early bracketology.

UConn was the No. 1 in the Bridgeport region. If this comes to pass, I love their chances for the final four, no matter who is in their bracket.

That being said, are we going to have to deal with SECreme's bracket every week until the end of the season?

By David in Naples!!!!!

Between Sunday's exhibition against Pace and December 29th, UConn plays 12 non conference games. Supposedly, this is the best chance many of those teams may have to beat the Huskies..! Well, excluding Notre Dame, who are 11-33 lifetime vs Geno, the other 11 opponents are a combined 3-64. :)

Only Baylor, 2 wins 3 losses, and LSU, 1 win 7 losses, have defeated a Geno led team. Here are the other opponents with their record against Geno's team.

FSU. 0-8
Texas. 0-8
DePaul. 0-13
Maryland. 0-5
Ohio State. 0-5
Nebraska, Dayton & K State. 0-2 each
Chattanooga. 0-1

In the investment business, they always caution that past performance is not indicative of future results. Let's hope that is not the case for the first 12 games of this season.

Go Huskies..!!

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                ****************************************************************************

Well, another post by that piece of crap so-called "longtimefan" on the UConn message board.

"We all have to wake up to the fact that Butler is not going to be a good player. She is awkward, slow, has bad hands, and is not athletic. She can't dominate against a division II opponent. She just isn't good for anything more than about 2 minutes a game, during which she will miss a lay-up and draw two personals. Next year, we'll have some quality players with size. Butler was a mistake."

She can't dominate against a division II opponent? Really? Like an exhibition game tells you all you need to know?

And she did have 8 points and 9 rebounds. Pretty good stats.

But this fan is not all there. With a little investigation (and reading this blog) this moron would see how she actually dominated Div I teams while a freshman at Georgetown. I have posted this before and I found it again. Here it is.

If you had to guess, how bad was Georgetown's SOS in 2013-14? 100? 150? 200?  Nope, it's actually pretty damn good in the scheme of things.

realtime RPI - 41
Wbbstate - 38
Nolan - 49

Georgetown in 2013-14 schedule was in the top 15% of all of WCBB. That is nothing to sneeze at. So how did she do against the good teams? Teams under 100 RPI?

RPI 15 Penn State - 12 points 9 rebounds
RPI 25 DePaul - 9 points 10 rebounds, 15 points 13 rebounds, 8 points 11 rebounds
RPI 26 St. John's - 14 points 10 rebounds, 8 points 14 rebound
RPI 27 California - 16 points 15 rebounds
RPI 32 Michigan State - 7 points 12 rebounds
RPI 50 Villanova - 19 points 14 rebounds 12 points 13 rebounds
RPI 65 Florida - 16 points 18 rebounds
RPI 67 Creighton - 24 points 13 rebounds, 13 points 14 rebounds
RPI 69 Princeton - 14 points 5 rebounds
RPI 70 George Washington - 17 points 8 rebounds
RPI 86 Marquette - 12 points 12 rebounds, 14 points 8 rebounds

Against the teams with under 100 RPI, she averages 13.5 points per game and 11.7 rebounds per game.

There you go. More proof that LongtimeFan is just a friggin' idiot.

While I'm on a roll, I guess I wasn't the only one to notice the embarrassing drubbing of Bluefield State by Maryland. Here are a few links.

One article said that this will be the most dominant, lopsided win of the 2016-17 season. Well, until Maryland plays it's second exhibition game on Sunday.

Opponent?  Mary Baldwin University. Another Division II team. Here was their schedule and results from last season. If you don't feel like clicking on the link, I'll just say that they were 0-24 last season. They shot only 26% on the entire season. They were outrebounded by 22 per game. Just a terrible team.

Yes, a winless Division II team going against a top 10 Division I team. One that doesn't seem to have a clue in how to clear the bench and not run up the score.

I can only imagine the numbers that will come out of this game.

By David in Naples!!!!!

After just one exhibition game, several UConn "fans" are ready to strip Natalie Butler of her scholarship and bury her at the end of the bench. She played terribly Tuesday night against IUP, right?  Well, not so fast... Some people evaluate the facts before judgement. Here's the facts:

1.  Natalie played 24 minutes, same number of minutes as Saniya and only 1 less than Napheesa. Geno was no doubt giving her time to get comfortable and for the staff to evaluate.
2. Butler scored 8 points on 7 shots. She missed two short putbacks, but otherwise went 3-5 from the field.
3. Her 9 rebounds tied Gabby for the team lead. Should we fire Gabby too..??
4. Nat had 2 assists vs 0 turnovers AND 2 steals. Just turrible..!! ;)
5. Butler's 2-4 from the free throw line is a negative, but way to small a sample to draw a conclusion. By the way, Gabby & Crystal both missed 3 free throws...

Playing against smaller opponents doesn't automatically mean she should have had a double-double. At least one of her fouls seemed unfair as one of the fidgets banged into Nat and went flying. Everyone knows refs favor smaller people when they get touched by a big. 8-)   Bottom line, she is 24 minutes into the new season. Can we wait a while before relegating her to the bench forever.

Go Huskies..!!

DoggyDaddy's Dailies 11/3/16

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                ****************************************************************************

I left off the post game interviews with Geno and a few of the players. Enjoy!

Let me add a few more thoughts.

I was very happy with how Sanyia Chong looked. She played with confidence, didn't turn the ball over and most of all played like she was healthy. UConn is going to need her to play well.

I'm a big Kyra Irwin fan. In an early post I linked her highlight video and linked Notre Dames Erin Boley, a highly rated forward. I thought their games were comparable and Irwin did nothing in her first appearance as a Husky to change my mind. UConn is going to need her 6'2" big body.

I'm really looking forward to seeing more of Molly Bent. Her skills intrigue me. If she has any outside shot, she can be a solid contributor. Her defense alone will keep her in games.

Butler is getting hammered on the message boards, but I thought she looked better than last season. She did a much better job holding on to the ball and was strong in positioning in the paint. UConn is going to need her to play against the big teams. Thankfully there are only a few of those.

It's going to be fun watching this team grow together. Until they are pressed and defended hard in the paint, we don't know how they are going to react. It's a young team in regards to being THE players. There could easily be a few losses. Then again, they are talented enough to win every game. I don't see a super team out there.

Still hoping to see them in person on Sunday!!!

****************************************************************************

Yes, UConn won their exhibition game 111-39. You sometimes wonder what they get out of a game against such an overmatched opponent.

But, with the Maryland 146-17 win against Div II over Bluefield State, the question is what the hell can you get out of a game like that!!!!

Maryland ran out to a 74-17 lead at halftime. They eased up in the second half only scoring 72 points. But amazingly, they SHUTOUT  Bluefield State in the second half. Really. Zero points. Nada.

Unbelievable. And the Maryland coach, the lovely Brenda Frese said this.

"I thought tonight was a good tuneup for us"

Thank you for reminding me why I don't like you Brenda.

****************************************************************************
I don't get really pissed off very often, but this really annoyed the hell out of me.

A poster on one of the UConn message board goes by the handle of "Longtimefan". After ONE exhibition game, he had this to say -

"The compliments to Molly...comparing her to Ekmark and Lawlor...leave me flat. She has to be much better than either of them or we are doomed. I am sure she is. Who ever saw anything, at this level, in either Lawlor or Ekmark? "Based upon last year, I also see little future for Butler. She may be okay against non competitive teams like Indiana of Pa. Or many of the teams in Uconn's league ( ugh). But she will be lit up against quality players on quality teams. Unless, of course, she has somehow metamorphasized over the summer."

My good friend David, who sends me those great "Numbers" information had this to say about it.

"I will never understand why a grown adult, who professes to be a longtime fan, feels the need to trash a kid who busted her butt for 3 years and gives 100% in effort and attitude. >:D   For the record, Shea Ralph saw the "anything at this level" in TLAW, when the team requested walk-ons to try out. Geno was looking for exactly what he got in Tierney... a team first, do whatever I can to help, never complain, never give up kid to round out the roster. Her effort earned her a scholarship and great praise from Geno and the staff. I guess I shouldn't expect much from a guy who's avatar features the back end of a horse...  8-)

David hit the nail on the head. I will never understand grown people who trash players. These kids work harder than anyone can imagine and provide us with terrific entertainment. I write about this team more than most folks and you will never see me say anything like that.

This "longtimefan" is no fan at all. Just a jerk that should find a professional team to follow.

By David in Naples!!!!!

UConn started their 2016-17 season with an 111-39 exhibition trouncing of an undersized, but game, IUP team. The stats don't count, but they are fun to analyze. Here are some of the best ones from last night.

1. The UConn defense gave up 19 points in the first 10 minutes, but only 20 points total in the rest of the game.
2. Gabby played 22 minutes and scored 22 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, gave out 6 assists and stole 5 passes. She also blocked 3 shots... :D
3. Katie Lou only shot 2-7 from the three point arc, but made up for that by going 8-12 inside the arc. She scored 24 pts to lead the Huskies.
4. IUP played 12 players during the game. 5 of them never scored and 2 more had only two points each.
5. UConn created 27 turnovers and blocked 5 shots. In contrast, IUP had 15 baskets. :o
6. Six UConn players scored in double figures, including Kyla Irwin who got 12 on 80% shooting.
7. The three freshman played 44 minutes total and had only 3 turnovers. 8-)

Hard to come away from watching last night's game and not be happy.
Go Huskies..!!

DoggyDaddy's Dailies 11/2/16

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                ****************************************************************************

It was so much fun to see the Huskies on the court again. I wanted to scream like KLS did in the picture above.

While the video was just from the side with no replays, the play-by-play by the radio folks was excellent. They showed that Morgan Tuck was in attendance. Always great to see her. Just a reminder that UConn was playing a Div II team that was totally outmanned athletically so all my comments have to be taken with that in mind.

The first thing I noticed was that there was no knee brace for Chong. And she looked fine the entire first half when in the game.

Well, it didn't take long for UConn to score. Gabby Williams jumped center, won the tap with a forward motion to Samuelson who drove in for the layup and was fouled. Quite the start. That took all of 3 seconds. On pace for 800 points....lol.

Early on it looked like Samuelson was trying to make up for the big three's scoring all by herself. She was ready to shoot as soon as she thought she was open. I loved her mid range jumper and her drive and pull up from in close. I'm sure she will settle in and play more in the team flow.

Gabby Williams was all over the place. Rebounding, steals, defensive pressure, she was involved in almost every phase of the game.

The first sub of the game was Butler for Williams. Natalie played well. She showed no hesitation when in position under the basket.

I loved the Nurse to Chong pass on a fast break. Molly Bent was the first freshman off the bench wearing No. 10. The first player since Sue Bird to wear that number. She did not look out of place, especially on the defensive end. She played text book on the ball defense, moving her feet to keep the ball handler in front of her.

UConn led 33-19 at the end of the first quarter. Kia Nurse hit a nice three to cap the scoring.

A disappointing defensive first quarter for the Huskies. Too many open shots allowed.

Chong was terrific at the start of the second quarter. She made a quick steal, going coast to coast for the layup and then picked up a loose ball and made a terrific pass in traffic to Williams for a layup.

Butler grabbed a rebound and what I want ot see more of. A Wes Unseld (dating myself) over the head pass to initiate the break.

Williams had a crazy offensive rebound and put back. She jumped higher than anyone else and in one motion put the ball in the basket and was fouled. Amazing.

Dangerfield finally entered the game with only two minutes left in the half. But, boy was it worth the wait. She grabbed a missed shot and dribbled down the court. Once past midcourt she delivers a no-look pass to Collier for the layup. Nice!!

After going 1-4 from the FT line to start the game, UConn was 11-12 to finish the half. They led the country last year. Looks good for a repeat performance.

After giving up 5 points in the first quarter, UConn kicked up their defense, holding IUP to only 5 points in the second quarter. Geno had to be happier with that effort. The extended pressure allowed UConn to take a 68-24 lead at the half on a Nurse three point play at the buzzer.

The second half started as the game did. A quick basket and a foul on a nice pass by Williams down low to a cutting Collier.

And the rest of the second quarter was the Gabby Williams show. Rebounds, put backs, assists, blocks, steals. She was just doing it all. What an amazing athlete.

It was nice to see Chong and Nurse hit back to back threes. UConn will need to see plenty of that from their back court duo.

IUP was able to hit a few threes in the quarter, but outside of that, UConn again played excellent defense against the overmatched Crimson Hawks.

Butler again was the first sub off the bench, along with Bent.

A great crossover dribble by Samuelson who finished with the left hand. A really nice play.

It was 92-33 at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter was a lot of sloppy play. They struggled to score but the effort was there.

UConn finally scored their 100th point with 2:49 remaining in the game on a nice dribble penetration by Dangerfield and a dish to Irwin. Crystal made several nice passes as did Butler in the post to a cutting Irwin who was the beneficiary of the nice assists. I really liked Irwin's play. She rebounds with both hands and has a nice left hand to finish plays. The subs did a nice job, scoring 11 points over the last 3 minutes for a final of 111-39.

UConn was led by Samuelson with 24 points. Williams added 22 points and 9 rebounds along with 6 assists. Nurse scored 17 points and added 3 assists. Collier had 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Chong was the fifth starter with double digit scoring with 11 points.

The bench played under control. Butler scored 8 points and snagged 9 rebounds. Irwin played a terrific game in her limited minutes scoring 12 points. And Dangerfield handed out 3 slick assists. Bent didn't have much impact on offense, but as I said earlier, I loved her on the ball defense.

On to the next game on Sunday at the XL center. I hope to make that game in person.

By David in Naples!!!!!

The season starts tonight with an exhibition game at Gampel against IUP.  UConn has many streaks on the line this year. While exhibition games don't count, here are the main streaks on the line starting Monday November 14th.

1. Victories in 75 straight games, including regular season, conference and NCAA tournament play.
2. Sweet 16 appearances for the last 23 years.
3. A home winning streak of 49 straight games.
4. UConn has 11 seasons in a row with 30 wins.
5. The NCAA tournament consecutive streak is up to 28 appearances without a miss.
6. The Final Four has included the Huskies for 9 straight years.

Not all these streaks may survive this coming season. Then again, UConn has Geno and the rest don't. 8-)

Go Huskies..!!
