HUSKY HANGOVER

UConn won their game Saturday against Cincinnati 65-55 in a game that the Husky offense sputtered again as it has way too many times this season. The head of the department of shooting bricks was Katie Lou Samuelson. Sometimes it's hard to believe that the best three point shooter in the country last season could totally lose her shot. In this game she was 2-11 from the field and 0-6 on threes. She did manage to get to the free throw line 9 times and she did make 8 of those. But UConn really needs her to find that beautiful stroke again and carry it through to the end of the season, hopefully with a championship. Great shooters eventually find it. I just hope it's not until she is in the WNBA!

My congrats goes out to Napheesa Collier, whose double-double this game had her  join the exclusive 2000 point, 1000 rebound career mark. She has been terrific this season.

I hate this expression but it rings true after this game. A win is a win is a win. And it was a win. Next up for UConn is East Carolina. The Pirates are 2-8 their last ten and 2-6 in the conference. More on them in a future blog but UConn can hopefully work out some kinks in this game.

David from Naples has all the positive stats he could find from this game, so enjoy them. And enjoy the game highlights below.

Thursday night, No. 8 Stanford was upset by unranked California at the buzzer. You think it pissed them off? In a scheduling quirk these two teams met again Saturday and Stanford just slapped the Bears around early and often. The Cardinal jumped out to a 22-5 lead in the first quarter and put California away in their 75-50 win.

The only upset in the Top 25 Saturday was BYU. They lost for the second consecutive game losing to unranked Pepperdine 79-65. The Cougars won't just be exiting the Top 25 after these two losses. They will be in the elevator when the cord snaps. Whoooosh……...

The two teams that beat UConn took care of weak conference opponents in big wins. No. 1 Baylor beat Texas Tech 96-37 in a total blowout and soon to be No. 2 Louisville hammered 76-44. Now THAT is the way to beat the bottom of your conference teams! But look at it this way. Maybe they are peaking too early??? Maybe??

Tonight’s Fun w/ Numbers starts with a memory. Remember every Do-it-Yourself project you ever tried looked pretty poor half way through..? That desk you sanded before re-painting looked totally unfinished before the final paint job. That is UConn right now. 19-2, but totally not finished. Relax....
Let’s find the good in the Cincinnati victory:
1. Napheesa joined the 2,000 point club with her first 17 pts.
2. Both Pheesa and Megan had double-doubles in points and rebounds.
3. UConn went 21-24 from the free throw line. That is 87.5%..!
4. Out rebounded Cincy 42-29.
5. Lou went 8-9 from the charity stripe.
6. Defense held Cincy to 38% shooting from the field.
7. Free throw defense was excellent. They only went 3-6 or 50%.

Picture what this team will look like in March with the final paint job. 😊

Go Huskies..!!

Doggy's Doghouse 2/1/19

I was going to write a long dissertation about how spoiled UConn fans are, how I read so many ugly comments about Geno, specific players, and the state of the UConn women's basketball program. But I am not going to go there. You all know who you are, and you should be embarrassed with the way you are reacting to this loss and to this years team in general.

So, I'm getting right back on the positive train again, riding that to the final four!!!

Up next for UConn is Cincinnati, a team that the Huskies destroy 82-38. I don't think playing on the Bearcat's home court this time will make much of a difference. Here are the game highlights to remind you of how good this team can play.

Read this article and learn a little about how Geno thinks and how lucky these young women are to play for him.

What Geno Auriemma had to say about UConn’s loss to Louisville

I just noticed this as I was writing this blog, but No. 8 Stanford lost to unranked California Thursday night in a late game. One more upset in a year of parity.

No. 13 Iowa State lost to unranked Michigan Friday night. It's just the nature of the beast right now. Not even Notre Dame has been immune to the upset bug.

Just more perspective when you look at the standings and see that UConn has only lost to the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country.

Napheesa Collier had 8 rebounds against Louisville. With those boards, Pheesa joined the exclusive 1,000 rebound club at UConn. She now sits at 1,008, having passed Gabby at 1,007. Next up is Jamelle Elliott with 1,054 then Stef Dolson at 1,101.

Collier is #7 all-time with Jamelle at 6 and Dolson at 5. So, just 93 rebounds from today, Napheesa moves into 5th place as-time..!!

Go Pheesa..!!

And one number from DoggyDaddy - 17,023. That's how many fans Louisville packed into The Yum Thursday night. GO CARD FANS!!!!!
