Image result for who's next

Next up for UConn is future BE conference mate Seton Hall on Thursday at the unusual time of 6:30. Maybe that is Jersey time???

The Hall is coming off a 69-65 win in the Bahama's against Vanderbilt, a team that UConn played earlier in the season and beat 64-51.

A quick look tells me that the Pirates aren't a very good shooting team, they turn the ball over a lot and have been outrebounded this season. So, how are they 5-3 on the season? Defense.

They average 11 steals per game and hold their opponents to under 40% shooting.

I'm confident that this won't happen against UConn. Look for a full pregame report soon.

Image result for Class of 2017

Congrats to junior Megan Walker, who won one of what predict will be several AAC player of the week awards. She has been terrific this year.

I remember an article on ESPN before the season started re-ranking the HS class of 2017 after two years. I believe that Chennedy Carter was moved to number one, Satou Sabally was number two, Kiana Williams was number three and Walker was number four.

After 20% of the season being completed, I think Walker has moved back up to the top of the list. Here are the stats for these four players.

Walker PPG - 20.3, RPG 8.3, Assists/TO 15/15, FG% 47.4, 3FG% 46.7, blocks 3, steals 6
Carter  PPG - 22.7, RPG 4.0, Assists/TO 17/23, FG% 43.8, 3FG% 24.2, blocks 0, steals 12
Sabally PPG - 17.8, RPG 6.5, Assists/TO 10/10, FG% 40.7, 3FG% 24.2, blocks 1, steals 6
Williams PPG - 11.5, RPG 3.4, Assists/TO 32/15, FG% 37.8, 3FG% 26.8, blocks 0, steals 9

It's pretty clear to me that so far this season, Megan Walker is having the best season. Her shooting percentages are the key compared to the other three players.

It's early, so I will look back into this after the next 20% of the season is complete.

Image result for No. 1?

Well, my prediction for No. 1 was correct. That was easy. Both No. 1 and No. 2 lost so it makes sense that No. 3 Stanford moves to No. 1.

I thought that UConn would be carried along with Stanford up two spots. That is where my prediction went off the rails.

I was only a little surprised that Oregon only slipped 2 spots. But Louisville moving up 6 spots based on one game, albeit a big game, really surprised me. And surprising me a little less but still a surprise is Baylor, based on one game, dropped 5 spots to No. 7.

None of this matters. Polls after around 20% of the season being completed mean nothing. Just some bragging rights and historical stuff.

Interesting that UConn got two first place votes. I'd love to know who did that!!

By David in Naples!!!!!

In a perfect world, basketball teams would have balanced scoring among players and equal scoring inside and outside the 3 point arc. Take UConn for example. Four players average in double figures for points. Meg leads at 20.3 per game with Christyn, Crystal and Olivia right behind at 17.8, 13.4 and 11.5 per game. More importantly, the Huskies have inside and outside scoring balance.

UConn has scored 450 points in 6 games for a nice 75 points per game average.
* Of the 450 points, 258 or 57% have come from inside the 3 pt arc.
* Another 138 or 31% have been three-point shots.
* The final 54 points or 12% came from free throws. Even the made free throws are balanced with Meg at 16, Liv at 11, Christyn at 10 & Crystal and Aubrey at 6.

Now consider Baylor. They have scored a total of 702 points in 8 games against a cupcake schedule. While their player averages are balanced, their scoring location is not. Consider:
* 504 points or 72% have been scored from inside the arc. That works against Grambling, where BU took 80 shots and only 9 were threes.
* Only 63 points have been from 3 point makes. That is 9%. Baylor has only tried 59 threes vs 123 for UConn.
* Free throws have added 135 points to the Bears total. That's 19% from the charity stripe.

One sided scoring allows the opponent's defense to adjust and take away what you do best. Good three point shooting keeps the defense spread out and out of the lane. Balance is always the best formula.

Go Huskies..!!

No crazy upsets on Sunday. Thank god, I'm exhausted!!!

No. 21 Depaul had a close call but hung on to beat Northwestern 70-68. The Blue Demons did their usual thing and took 23 three point shots and hit 39% of them. They struggled holding on to the ball with 21 turnovers. Too many. But they had 26 assists. A typical Doug Bruno coached team. Always a tough out.

No. 20 Tennessee continued it's run through their Gauntlet of a tough schedule, beating Air Force  81-57.  16,000 capacity Thompson Boiling Arena was busting at the seams with their 8032 in attendance. They have an SOS in the 300's. How can anyone make a judgement on how good this team is based on this incredibly weak schedule?

On edit, another game finished and guess what. An upset!!! And it couldn't happen to a better team, unless it was Tennessee or Notre Dame. Yes, I'm not a fan of Texas A&M. The fact that Coach Blair let's that gunner Chennedy Carter, do whatever she wants on the court goes against my love of basketball purity. It's just not how the game is supposed to be played.

No. 12 Florida State put the hammer to the No. 6 Aggies 80-58 in a 22 point destruction. Carter did score 20 points, but it took 20 shots to get that number. She was 8-20 from the field and 0-7 on threes. And she fouled out with 4 minutes left in the game.

The SEC has several teams in the Top 25. But are they really that good? I don't believe so.

In one week, every ranked team but Tennessee and Kentucky lost their first games.

South Carolina, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Arkansas. And if you can believe it. Tennessee along with Kentucky are the only two undefeated teams in the conference. And they play each other in a  couple of weeks. Tennessee has Stanford first. We will see how good Tennessee is in that game.

Remember this series of plays in the Syracuse Green Bay game in the last 52 seconds?

Syracuse makes a free throw. 56-50. 52 seconds left.

Green Bay makes a hail mary three pointer with no time left. The officials reviewed and basket was good. 65-65 at the buzzer!!!!

Here is the video of some of those plays. It does have the Hail Mary shot.

Image result for No. 1?
????????????????????????

So, No. 1 Oregon and No. 2 Baylor lost. How will this impact the poll coming out on Monday?

Based on what I have seen over the many years of poll watching, this is going to be a tough one to call. I'm thinking that many voters will only knock Oregon down 2 slots. Baylor will move two slots down too. That means that Stanford will move up 2 spots and UConn will move up 2 spots.

And Louisville and South Carolina?

The Cards could move up three spots and South Carolina will stay the same as they also lost to Indiana before beating Baylor.

So here is my guess, not how I would vote.

1. Stanford
2. UConn
3. Oregon
4. Baylor
5. Louisville
6. South Carolina
7. Oregon State
8. Maryland
9. UCLA
10. Texas A&M

How would I vote?

1. UConn
2-25. Who cares!!

By David in Naples!!!!!

On a day when the #1 and #2 teams in the country lost and the #3 team barely won, one could surmise that there was some very poor shooting. It was worse than one might even think. Consider:

1. Louisville (#8) beat Oregon, the #1, 72-62, taking advantage of Oregon going 6-35 from three-point range. Oregon missed 29 three-point shots..!! That is a shooting % of 17%. The sad part is L'Ville shot poorly as well, going 5-18 or 28%. It is a wonder both didn't lose. (puke)

2. Baylor, ranked #2 in the country, also lost to #5 South Carolina 74-59. Given the margin of victory, South Carolina must have shot the ball lights out, right?  Not exactly. They went 4-13 or 31% from three-point range. Obviously, Baylor sucked even worse, going 2-9 or 22% from long range.

3. Stanford, the #3 team, actually won, but still stunk from 3 pt range. They went 5-19 or 26%. Mississippi State (#10) also only made 5 threes, but took only 14 tries. Their 36% was the high water mark for these six teams listed as some of the best in the country.

Overall, the three games produced a combined 27 three point baskets on 108 tries. That is an incredibly bad 25%. By comparison, UConn's 46-143 or 37% is starting to look downright decent. Take out Anna Makurat's poor 4-21 start and the Huskies come in at 41% shooting for the rest of the team.

Go Huskies..!!
