I hope your Thanksgiving was as wonderful as mine. My daughter and son-in-law outdid themselves in both food and hospitality. It was just fantastic!!

Image result for holiday tournaments

I love the Thanksgiving tournaments. There are always great games and a few surprises. The first day of this years tournaments was no different.

In the Paradise Jam, No. 17 Indiana used a big fourth quarter to beat No. 5 South Carolina. The Gamecocks were picking up steam as one of the teams to beat this season. Some were saying they were the most talented team in the nation (hello Oregon??). Well, don't look now Dawn, but your freshman are showing. SC was bogged down by foul trouble this game with freshman center Boston and Senior Harris both fouling out. And freshman guard Zia Cooke was 4-19 from the field. Overall they were 36% from the field and 2-19 on threes. You are not going to win many games that way.

In the Cancun Challenge, No. 23 West Virginia was upset by Creighton. Not sure that the Mountaineers were a top 25 team anyways. But an upset is an upset.

Also in the Cancun Challenge, unranked South Dakota State beat No. 21 South Florida 61-50. This is the second loss for South Florida and could push them out of the Top 25. They still have to take on Notre Dame. Ahh...no big deal....lol.

Speaking of Notre Dame, they fell to 4-3 on the season losing to Florida Gulf Coast 69-60. I'm not sure this is an upset or not. I'm certainly not upset about it. FGCU is always a solid team that makes the NCAA's from the Sun Conference. Notre Dame was just terrible in this game. They did hit a good percentage of their shots overall, but were only 3-12 on threes. The big number was the 25 turnovers and only 11 assists. When was the last time a Notre Dame team had 25 turnovers? I can't imagine when. With a very good South Dakota State game up next and a ranked South Florida team after that, the Irish are in jeopardy in going 0-3 in their holiday tournament games.

By David in Naples!!!!!

One of the best surprises of this young season is the play of Olivia Nelson-Ododa. Particularly, her shot blocking. Through 6 games she has 28 blocked shots for an average of 4.6 per game. An average of 4 per game over 37 games is 148 blocks. Do that for this season and the next two after that and you have 444 total blocks. That would be 30 blocks more than Stevie has as the all-time #1 shot blocker at UConn. (444 vs 414).

But what guarantee is there that ONO can block 4 shots per game for 3 whole seasons? None, but keep in mind Liv had 54 blocks as a freshman. So today she stands at 82 for her career. That is 332 short of Stewie with almost 105 games still to play. So 3.3 blocks per game would pass Stewie for 1st place. Stay healthy and set the record Liv..!!

Doggy's Doghouse 11/27/19 Happy Thanksgiving!!

Kyla Irwin, Jayla Scaife
The Most Efficient player in the Country!!!

David and I sometimes have the same thing to write about on a particular night. Actually, it happens often. And I always defer to him. His "Stats don't Lie" are about Kyla Irwin and they show what a great season this young lady is having.  I won't repeat her stats here.

I have watched her embrace her senior leadership, grabbing almost 20 minutes a game using sheer will and smarts. Watch her in the huddles. She talks non-stop. The question was "who would replace Dangerfield when she isn't playing point guard"? It's clear that Kyla is the point forward that UConn runs the offense through. She moves the players around, finds the open player for easy shots and is a steadying force on the court.

You just have to love a player like this. Not physically gifted, she played 36 terrific minutes against Dayton. She has earned the starting spot.

Image result for graph up and down

A couple of weeks ago I posted these stats after four game for Tennesseee

FG% 43.0
3FG% 29.0
FT% 59.7
Assists/TO 66/76

Now, here it is after 6 games

FG% 45.0
3FG% 28.0
FT% 62.5
Assists/TO 110/108

Congrats to the Lady Vols on their slight improvement.

Of course, this is against RealtimeRPI’s 295, 335, 96, 304,165, and 230 rated teams. Their SOS according to this site is 333. 333 Really?

My buddy Meyers pointed out UConn’s numbers at the same time (Only 2 games).

FG% 41.5%
3FG% 28.9%
FT % 60.7%
Asst/TO 29/26

So, how does UConn stand now after 6 games?

FG% 46.7%
3FG% 37.4%
FT % 69.2%
Asst/TO 109/75%

Now, that is an improvement. And Real-time RPI has them with the 7th rated SOS.

Kyla Irwin is not perfect anymore. At least not shooting from the field. She is only 11-12 for 92%. Six shots of seven from the 3 pt arc have gone in and all 5 from closer were baskets. Her assist to turnover is also not perfect, but is darn close at 4 to 1. (12 assists vs 3 turnovers)

Her free throw shooting is a mere 75%, at 3-4. The 15 rebounds equal a nice 3 per game and her 2 blocks are only 1 less than Megan. Playing 95 total minutes in 5 games gives Kyla a nice 19 per game average. Her 6.2 pts per game lands her 5th spot on the Huskies.

Good hustle and few mistakes are her trademarks..!
