GO UCONN!!!!!

No. 5 UConn Huskies                     No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks
77                                                    81

What a great game!!! Yes, the Huskies lost, but they showed they can play with South Carolina and with a few breaks they can beat the Gamecocks with the 8 players they have and certainly can when Fudd and Ducharme return to action.

Credit to South Carolina. Down 11 after the first period, they came back and tied the game at the half. But I loved how UConn never gave up, even down ten late in the game.

Plenty of controvery with some of the calls and lack of calls. Way too many fouls called on both teams. But with the short lineup, the foul issues impacted UConn much more than South Carolina.

Also credit to Boston, who rose to the occasion and played tough for the entire game and helped South Carolina dominate the offensive boards with 25 rebounds on that end. It made up for the poor shooting that the Gamecocks had for the game. They only shot 38% from the floor and 3-15 on threes. Because of the rebounding edge they took 13 more shots from the field and 11 more free throws. That was just too much to overcome.

But the Huskies did their darn best and showed they run the most efficient offense in the women's game. They shot 52% from the field against the best FG percentage defense in the country and scored 77 points on a team that only allows 45 PPG, also the best in the counrty. Just a few more defensive rebounds and this is a different game. In that regard, they miss Brady more than Fudd and Ducharme.

Because of foul trouble, Edwards was only able to play 29 minutes but showed she deserves All-American consideration. She scored 25 points on 10-14 from the field. I'm pretty sure that if she played the full 40 minutes, she would have produced more than the zero points and rebounds that Patterson put up in her 14 minutes. More on foul trouble later.

Lou had a nice bounce back with 19 points on 7-15 shooting but she was saddled with foul issues as well and had fouled out as well. Griffin was terrific as well with 17 points and Muhl just carried the team in that great first quarter with 9 points finishing with 11 and 4 assists.

The offensive rebounding by South Carolina shouldn't take away the job the Huskies did on defense in stopping so many first shot attempts. Boston was 8-16 and Cardoso was 6-9 and most of their baskets were on put backs. They held Cooke to 2-15 shooting and 0-4 on threes.  The rest of the team went 10-27.

Up next for UConn is Marquette, a team the Huskies beat earlier in the season 61-48. I would expect another tough outing for UConn, but they know how important Big East games are. Winning out puts them ihn a great position for a No. 1 seed.

Geno is pissed off about the officiating. And can you blame him? And it's not just this game. Teams are playing extremely physical and from my unbiased (don't laugh) eye, the refs are letting it happen over and over again. It's more the non-calls where teams bang around Lou and other players with impunity. It is not good for a finese team like UConn. Will that change? Well, at least Geno is bringing his displeasue out in the media and maybe that makes a difference.

What a crazy Sunday!! Three upsets and some close calls for Top 25 teams.

No. 11 North Carolina lost to Louisville 62-55 behind 17 points by Van Lith and 17 points by Carr who was 5-9 on threes. It was just a terrible shooting game from both teams. The Tarheels shot 33%, were 1-13 on threes and turned the ball over 13 times. The Cardinals shot 34% from the field, 28% on threes and had 22 turnovers. And won.

No. 16 Duke won their 20th game of the season beating No. 9 Notre Dame 57-52 in another low scoring affair. Celeste Taylor led the Blue Devils with 14 points, the only Duke player in double digit scoring. Westbeld had 15 and Citron had 14 to lead the Irish. Both teams shot 40% from the field and around 25% on threes for the game, making the North Carolina//Louisville game look like a shoot out.

The big upset was No. 3 Stanford getting beat by unranked Washington 72-67. I always like when a Husky wins!! Stanford, in my opinion, is not as good as last year and not nearly as good as UConn. Stanford jumped out easly but Washington used a 30-17 second quarter to take the halftime lead. Stanford took a  one point lead after three quarters but the Huskies pulled away in the fourth quarter for the 5 point win.

It should be interesting to see how the voters see the results this week, and certainly Sunday, when they put together their Top 25 ballot.

Last week they had 2-5 within 12 points of each other.

Stanford 635
LSU 628
Indiana 627
UConn 623

Iowa and Utah are 100+ points behind this group. It's hard to believe they will get enough votes to move into the 2-5 slots.

So with the Stanford loss and the close games for LSU to Georgia and Texas A&M, how will the voters punish Stanford and will they look at LSU differently?

I know what I would do. Stanford has to move down under UConn. UConn did lose so they can't move ahead of LSU or Indiana.

I'd wouldn't punish UConn and the 1-7 should be -

South Carolina
Indiana
LSU
UConn
Iowa
Stanford
Utah

I'm not very good at this so we shall see.
