As I said yesterday, the point of view from the South Carolina camp is that the two main advantages are the overall depth and the advantage in the frontcourt. 

I looked at the depth yesterday, so let's look at the front courts and see how they compare.

Front Court 
 
There are three ways to compare front courts:

Depth
Height
Performance

South Carolina has listed 6 players as either a forward or center. One doesn't play at all. Both Dozier and Wilson are listed as guard/forward. Wilson is a forward. They probably listed it like that to make her happy.But they start Dozier so I'll include her. So, for purposes of this exercise, I will list their front court as Wilson, Welch, Coates, Ibiam and White. I really don't want to list White. She has only played in 9 of now 20 games after Thursday's outing. I just convinced myself not to include her. 

So, SC's front line is: 

6'4" Ibiam MPG - 17.6, PPG - 7.1, RPG - 4.4, Asts - 8, TO - 21, Blk - 21, Stl - 4    
6' Welch MPG - 24.9,  PPG - 9.6, RPG - 5.7, Asts - 35, TO - 29, Blk - 24, Stl -7   
6'4" Coates MPG - 20.5, PPG - 11.1, RPG - 8.6, Asts - 16, TO - 22, Blk - 28, Stl -10   
6'5" Wilson MPG - 21.4, PPG - 13.6, RPG - 7.2, Asts - 18, TO - 33, Blk - 31, Stl - 25
5'11 Dozier MPG - 16.7,  PPG - 4.5, RPG - .8, Asts - 38, TO - 20, Blk - 2, Stl - 10 

UConn's front line is a little easier. They start Stewart, Tuck and KML. And they bring in Stokes and Williams off the bench. But do I count Williams, who hasn't played many minutes against the tougher teams? I am going to include her. Geno said after Wednesday's game that he thought "Gabby is making the most progress". Who am I to argue?

6'2" Tuck MPG - 25.3, PPG - 14.5, RPG - 5.2, Asts - 58, TO - 37, Blk - 8, Stl - 13 
5'11" KML MPG - 28.1, PPG - 14.2, RPG - 4.3, Asts - 51, TO - 26, Blk - 2, Stl - 23 
5'11" Williams MPG - 16.5, PPG - 8.4, RPG - 6.0, Asts - 25, TO - 24, Blk - 8, Stl - 27 
6'3" Stokes MPG - 20.8, PPG - 5.6, RPG - 8.2, Asts - 20, TO - 21, Blk - 93, Stl - 12     

So, now that we have all the players, their heights and their stats, how does the front line comparisons look?

Depth - UConn has 5 frontcourt players, and South Carolina has 5. If White was playing it would be 6-5, then I would argue that Dozier is a guard...lol. So this one is even. 

Height - It's pretty clear that if you just use inches, South Carolina has a slight lead. But does anyone believe that Stokes is at a disadvantage over someone one inch taller? Or Tuck? That has yet to be seen. But to be fair, SC has the height advantage.

So, depth and height certainly are ways to measure the front courts. But performance is what counts. Who has the most points, rebounds, etc...etc. That is the difference maker. So how does that shake out???

Performance

South Carolina PPG 45.9, RPG 26.7, Assists 115, Turnovers 125, Blocks 106, Steals 56.

UConn PPG 59.5, RPG 30.6, Assists 219, Turnovers 149, Blocks 154, Steals 113
The numbers speak for themselves, but I'll bark 'em out a little.

UConn's frontcourt  has scored 13.6 more PPG. 4.9 more RPG, 114 more assists, 48 mores blocks, 57 more steals than the South Carolina frontcourt.

Case Closed.

Tonight we have a masterpiece from the Big Sky conference. Portland State dropped to 3-17 for the season with a 72-31 loss to Montana.

UConn vs East Carolina Post Game Report

So, I'm watching the game and I see East Carolina score the first points of the game, UConn ties it up and then ECU makes the next basket to take the lead. The announcers couldn't stop glowing over the ECU team, how much they improved over the last game, blah blah blah. 7 and 1/2 minutes later UConn had a 22 point lead and the rout was on. Seriously Meghan?

UConn just dominated another opponent and they spread it out with 6 players in double figures and one of them wasn't KML. The usual sharp shooting Huskies struggled from the outside, so they took the ball inside as much as possible. I don't know if it was the game plan or just circumstances, but UConn took only 11 three pointers when they average over 20 per game. It was smart because they shot 60% from the field, increasing their NCAA leading field goal percentage to 53.9%. The team record is exactly that and with a few more weak AAC opponents and the early NCAA games, this team has a shot at breaking that record. They are on pace to obliterate the single season team record for total fields goals as well. This is one amazing offensive team.

Geno - “Kiah is in a defensive mindset right now that I think very few players can reach regarding their comfort level where they know that they can take chances and impact any shot that they want to impact. I’ve seen people do that in the past, I don’t know if I’ve seen anybody do it as consistently and as often as Kiah has done it. Even to the point that they call the foul. During one I even commented that I bet you when I look at the film it wasn’t a foul. When they said that she hit the person on the arm shooting it…she always gets the ball when its leaving your hand…maybe she did, but the fact that there was a foul called…we were all surprised. That is how in sync she is right now and she got one big offensive rebound in the second half in front of our bench. Regardless of the score, she is doing stuff lately that has become a part of who she is at both ends of the floor.”
  
Geno on the bench - “One of the issues with our bench is that, other than Kiah Stokes for a long period of time (three plus years), everybody else, this is relatively new to them, while Soniya Chong has done it a little bit. You can see that Kiah is the most comfortable…this is her role. It what she wants her role to be and she is playing it to the hilt. The other guys, I think Gabby is making the most progress. She is becoming the most consistent. She is the one that I think made that biggest jump from a month ago to now. Soniya comes and goes. Of the three players that play the most minutes, I would say that is my assessment right there.” 

Kiah Stokes - On blocking shots - “I think so. There was one thing, especially Kevin, I don’t know if you guys know him but he sits on the bench, and he said, “Kiah you have seven blocks so often, can’t you just get ten?” That was one thing where you don’t think about it, but once I noticed I was getting a few, I started to think that I wonder how many I’ve got, maybe I can get a few more. That was the approach I brought. To get a triple-double with blocks as the third category is pretty awesome. I had no idea that I set the record for most blocks as a UConn player either.”

What a terrific performance by Kiah in this game. I seen her score more points, I've seen her grab more rebounds, I've seen her block more shots...uh...never mind. But my point is that I've never seen her more confident and more aggressive on both sides of the ball. 
 
Her shot blocking skills rival the great Bill Russell of the Celtics. He was only listed at 6'9" but he had the knack of timing his jump, anticipating the shot, not going for ball fakes, and blocking with either hand. He rarely blocked the ball out of bounds. Does this all sound familiar? Stokes just has the knack as well.
 
Thanks to DVR's, you can watch a game a few times and focus on different players. In this game, Kiah was working so hard on both offense and defense. Now, we are used to that on defense, at least in the shot blocking aspect of her game. But now she is fighting harder for defensive position in the post and fighting for offensive position in the paint. She didn't always get the ball, but when she did, she went hard to the basket. There was one offensive rebound where she just dominated the ball and finished with her left hand.        
 
If this is anywhere near the play we are going to see going forward from Stokes, UConn just got a lot better. Oh yeah, 10 points 11 rebounds 10 blocks. Amazing!  
 
 
Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis
 
Well, she was due. After several hot shooting games in a row, she had a bit of a stinker. But KML knew she was off so she only took 6 shots. The rest of her game was solid and I'm sure she will be on target in the next game. I love that she was looking for her mid-range game as well as her three point arsenal. 
 
Moriah Jefferson 
Ok....I have to say it. It was a subtle but cheap shot by that ECU player on the play where Jefferson went into the basket stanchion. A slight push with the hand on the hip was enough where Moriah could not stop her momentum. A totally unnecessary play. And it pissed me off.

Before that happened, Jefferson was all over the court reeking havoc and playing her usual roadrunner pace that no one could keep up with. This is the second time that her back was a problem and I hope it doesn't lead into a chronic situation. I'm sure the medical staff will be keeping an eye on it.
 

Morgan Tuck 
 
If it wasn't for Stokes triple-double the POG probably would have gone to Morgan. Just another 17 point,  7-11 shooting game with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. She is a drop below 60% on field goals and at 80% on free throws. I can't wait to see her playing against a big and strong front line to see how she does when challenged. I'm thinking she might be ok. 

 
Breanna Stewart 

Stewart had a similar game to Tuck, production wise with 14 points 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals and 2 blocks. When Stewart and Tuck both have it going, it's say goodnight Irene for the opponent. I keep waiting for that explosive game. I'm hoping for February 9th.   
 
 

Kia Nurse
 
 I thought this was a great game for Nurse. I think she was as aggressive as I have seen all season. Whether it was diving for loose balls, taking a hard charge, driving strong to the hoop, Kia was showing all her physical skills. She is usually stronger than anyone she is guarding. Her shot was off, but I think she played right through that.
 

 Saniya Chong

 This was another solid performance for Chong. These two pictures tell the story of this game. Two excellent and strong drives to the basket for two! The one on the left was the Saniya I remembered from HS. She really does have the skills to be a BIG contributor for UConn. I'm liking what I'm seeing.

 








 

 Gabby Williams
 
Up another tenth of a point for an 8.4 scoring average. I would love to see her get to double digits but I don't think she will. She scored 11 points, nabbed 7 rebounds and had 2 assists with ZERO turnover. Check out the picture above on the left. She is so cut. Maya like.   
 
 
 
Courtney Ekmark
  
 She didn't take a shot, but normally they would have found her for a few long range shots. It looked to me the search for Stokes triple-double put a cramp in her offensive game. Her defense was excellent again. She is not ready to play against the better teams, but she is getting great experience.

Senior to Freshman......the beat goes on.....
UConn takes a trip to the city of brotherly love, the Phillies, the Sixer, the Eagles, the craziest sports fans in the world and of course is Geno's home city. He loves going back to visit friends and relatives.

Of course, it's the home of Temple University and UConn will take on their women's basketball team on Super Bowl Sunday at 2:00 on ESPN2. Tonya has them playing well since losing to UConn, winning their last 3 games. But it appears it will be a UConn sandwich of big wins on either side of that winning streak.

    Thanks Geno...I appreciate the kind words that I put in your mouth!

    I started this Blog as an outlet for my passion for UConn Women's basketball in October. I started out slow, but on November 18, I started my own streak and now it's 72 consecutive days that I have blogged. I had no idea I had this in me...but it keeps coming out!

    On Monday, February 16 I officially break UConn's 90 game streak with 91 consecutive days of blogging.

    The numbers are amazing to me. I average about 300 views a day and breaking the 30,000 mark is a big milestone.

    So, thank you, thank you, thank you, for reading me and feel free to comment on the blog or send me an email to the address at the bottom of this Dailies. I'd love to hear from you!!!

Congrats to Kiah Stokes who had the 4th UConn triple double in their history. Stoke had 10 points 11 rebounds and 10 blocks. I'll look it up when I put together the game report Thursday, but I believe she might be leading the country in blocked shots.
 


We all know that even when up 50, UConn continues to play hard. Well, even up 50, UConn's #1 fan cheers hard.

As the big game gets closer, and you have to be living under a rock to not know what game that is, the fans are starting to bluster. UConn fans predicting anywhere from 3-30 point wins and South Carolina fans calling UConn fans arrogant, but few give any analysis on why South Carolina will win.

I found one South Carolina fan that ventured out with his reasons and it's quite the interesting take.

It seems the main two reasons are the overall depth and the advantage in the frontcourt. 

Let's look at these one at a time.

Overall depth
 
So, how do you measure this?      

One way is to look at the minutes the players have and see how many have over ten MPG.

South Carolina has ten players with those numbers. Five of them have over twenty MPG. One has missed a lot of games due to injuries and averages the least in Jatari White. Should she be counted in the regular rotation? Hard to say.

UConn has nine players with those numbers. Seven have over twenty MPG. One has missed a lot of games due to injuries and averages the least in Courtney Ekmark. Same question about her. The only difference is Ekmark is healthy while White is recovering from the flu. 

Either way, there is only a difference of ONE player when you are comparing depth. I seriously doubt that this will make any difference in the game. Why??

Well, for one, UConn has the reputation of being among the best conditioned teams in the country. So, I fail to see how having one more player available is going to make any difference.

Now, having 10 players is great if you play them all. But as we all know, most coaches shrink their lineups against better competition. Geno always does that. So, what does that do to the numbers?

Against teams that played them tough or had a high ranking, South Carolina mpg look like this:

USC - 8 players with 10+ minutes, 5 with 20+ minutes.
Syracuse - 7 players with 10+ minutes, 5 with 20+ minutes, Mitchell had 40, Welch had 36. 
Duke - 7 players with 18+ minutes, 6 with 20+ minutes, 3 with 30+ minutes.
Kentucky - 8 players with 10+ minutes, 6 with 20+ minutes, 2 with 30+ minutes.
Texas A&M - 9 players with 10+ minutes, 5 with 20+ minutes, 1 with 30+ minutes.

It's clear that Staley shrinks her rotation as well.

From 10 players to 7-8 players with 10 minutes plus. And she increases everyone else minutes, including have 2-3 players with over 30 minutes in those games.

UConn also shrinks their rotation against the better teams, even if the games haven't been close except for the Stanford loss.

Stanford - 7 players with 20+ minutes. (this was an OT game so the minutes are wacky)
ND - 6 players with 20+ minutes. Chong with 9, Williams with 5 minutes.
DePaul - 8 players over 17+ minutes. 7 over 20+ minutes. 3 over 30 minutes.
Duke - 7 players over 14+ minutes. 5 over 20+ minutes. 4 over 30 minutes. Williams with 6.
USF - 8 players with 16+ minutes. 6 with 20+ minutes. 1 with over 30 minutes.

UConn looks to be all over the place. Sometimes Chong gets 10+ minutes, sometimes she doesn't. Williams hasn't seen minutes against any good team except for USF. So can we count on her when comparing depth?

I'd say that the true depth for both teams is 8 players for South Carolina and 7 for UConn. I'll ask again, does that one player make a difference? I'd argue no. I'm sure that Cocky fans would disagree.  

Tomorrow I'll take on comparison of the two frontcourts.

Ugly Game Of The Day
 
 I'm going to go out on a limb and without looking at the other games, East Carolina is my winner for Wednesday's UGOFD award.
 
Although I usually give some of the credit to UConn for any of their opponents ugly play, this game was just too good to pass up.
 
The Pirates walked the plank with 22.6% from the field, 19% on 3's, 19 Turnovers.
 
I just looked and I was right. No other team comes close to East Carolina in total ugliness.
 
Congrats on winning Thursday's Uggy.
