Doggy's UConn/Notre Dame Post Game Report

Image may contain: 2 people, people playing sports and basketball court

Game Analysis

Watching this game, you can see that this team learned something from last years season ending loss to Mississippi State. As Geno said, they didn't know how to react when MSU took the lead. They certainly knew how to react after the second quarter 24-4 run by Notre Dame that gave the Irish a 42-30 lead. UConn ended the half on a 6-1 run to stem the tide. The third quarter was mostly back and forth with Notre Dame holding on to a 62-54 lead.

A three pointer from the corner by ND's Lili Thompson to start the scoring in the fourth quarter game Notre Dame an 11 point lead at 65-54 with 9:30 left in the game. Katie Lou Samuelson had just left the game for good after tweaking her ankle and UConn had to go with only 5 players the rest of the way. Gabby Williams didn't play a minute in the second half.

UConn then went on a 26-6 to end the game for the 80-71 win. It was a terrific effort by all five players on the court. Kia Nurse started the rally with a three pointer to answer Thompson's three, Dangerfield made a couple of great passes and a beautiful putback floater off the backboard, Collier had several hustle rebounds and the freshman Walker had some HUGE rebounds and some needed points from the line. Finally, Azura Stevens played like an AA and dominated the paint. She scored at will, rebounded with a vengeance and defended the paint, forcing bad shots by the Irish.

The defense for the quarter was tremendous, although Notre Dame helped with some ill-advised shooting. They held them to 30% shooting in the second half and 3-11 in the fourth quarter.

All I can say is that was the best comeback by a UConn women's team I've seen in a long time and maybe the best ever based on the situations I mentioned and the opponent.

Game Quotes from Geno

"The comeback was probably indicative of the two teams I'm coaching right now. I'm coaching the team that's capable of being down a lot and giving up layups and second shots. We are that team, we put ourselves in that situation because we played against a really good team and we're missing a lot of things. This team is missing a lot of things and we refuse to acknowledge it sometimes and it catches up to you. And then there's the other team I coach, the team that played in the fourth quarter and when it was time to win the game they made the plays to win the game. Things like that fourth quarter remind us of how good our team can be. And they're a really good team. So we can be that good and it was good for us to learn that today."

"We're used to having post players that are really active and cover a lot of space to protect the basket. That's what we've had for a really long time. It's taking Azura a while to learn how to be that kind of defensive player. We're trying offensively to get her to go to more places to get her own shots. It's taking her awhile but she's getting better every game. Megan has a lot of talent. She can do a lot of things and rebounding is one of them and she showed that today. She proved that she can make plays in this kind of a game and this kind of environment. Hopefully in the upcoming days she can build on that."

"The Gabby thing is kind of off and on. It's something she's trying yo deal with. I wish I had a definitive answer. It affects the way she plays obviously, like it would for anyone else. Lou's problem wasn't what kept her out for 3 or 4 games, It was her ankle instead of her foot. We'll know more tomorrow. She was pretty animated in the game today and she got knocked around a couple of times. She's a fighter, she's a really tough kid."

“That fourth quarter really came down to, collectively, you could see a change. We don’t have that one person that walks around and acts like it and demands that kind of response. We don’t, and you can’t manufacture it. So it’s got to be a team thing, and that’s what happened in the fourth quarter. You could see it. The demeanor of our team changed.”

UCWBB v. Notre Dame
Game Quotes from
Notre Dame Coach Muffet McGraw

"We played well for 35 minutes. Defensively I thought we had some defensive lapses. Offensively we executed, but I thought we could have played a little smarter. We did a great job rebounding in the first half and not in the second half

"We just had a stretch of ugly and unfortunately for us it was the last five minutes."

"Being short handed and on the road doesn't impact us in a game like this. I don't think anyone felt tired in a game like this. The adrenaline doesn't let you."

“We played well for 35 minutes. I thought we had some defensive lapses. Offensively, we executed, but I thought we could have played a little smarter. We did a great job rebounding in the first half and not in the second half. … We just had a stretch of ugly and, unfortunately for us, it was the last five minutes.”

"Stevens is a great addition to the team. When we played her in the ACC (when she was at Duke) we did a good job on her but we didn't really have an answer for her today."

Player Evaluations

Azurá Stevens UCONN vs Notre Dame (photo by Stephen Slade)
Azura Stevens

Azura was fantastic in the comeback. She hit several key shots including a beautiful baseline move that was just spectacular for her 8 points in the quarter. I thought she just dominated the paint and as McGraw said, they had no answer for her. She intimidated the Notre Dame players on the defense  end. She is showing more and more emotion on the court as well. In her 26 minutes she had 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks. She is turning into a difference maker and on her way to an AA season.

“Playing through injuries speaks to this program. It is not about who is an All-American. It is about who is ready to play on any given night. I think an example of that is Meg. She came in today and got some key rebounds and played some solid defense. I think it shows we just have to be ready and play our best game.”

“We started packing it in really well and playing zone. We did a good job of not focusing on players that were not even looking at the basket to try and score.”

Katie Lou Samuelson (33) UCONN vs Notre Dame (photo by Stephen Slade)
Kati Lou Samuelson

No doubt Kati Lou is the toughest kid on this team. If you didn't know it after her "bucket" game against Maryland last season then you know it after this game. She was playing until either Geno dragged her out or until she unfortunately reinjured her foot. But as much pain as you saw her in after the tweak of her foot she ran out of the locker room and was ready to get back in the game. And Geno did just that in the last minute. She played an inspired 28 minutes scoring a team leading 18 points, and grabbing 5 rebounds. Kati Lou added 1 block and 2 steals. Not bad for missing 4 games.

“We didn’t play the right way in the first half. I think we overcame every challenge that was thrown at us. People who needed to step up stepped up and I think we really showed what we were made of and the heart that we had”

Crystal Dangerfield (5) UCONN vs Notre Dame (photo by Stephen Slade)
Crystal Dangerfield

One of two 40 minutes players in this game, Crystal was terrific in helping to engineer the comeback. Her defense was great and she had 5 assists and only 2 turnovers. She added 12 points going 2-5 on threes. The great rebound, putback floater was a huge basket in the middle of the comeback and her dump off pass to Stevens was just gorgeous. She is one special player.

Kia Nurse (11) UCONN vs Notre Dame (photo by Stephen Slade)
Kia Nurse

Make room for one more AA. It would be a shame if she doesn't get that honor this her last season. She made several clutch plays but none more than the big three she hit to start the rally in the fourth quarter. She also faked a three and blew by the Notre Dame defender for a layup later in that rally. In her 33 minutes, she had 13 points, 2 rebounds, and an assists. And she was 3-4 on threes increasing her three point percentage to a smidgeon over 60% for the season.

“In the final quarter we moved to the zone and tried to keep them on their heels, and we were able to help each other out more with drives and kicks.”

“I think we are really fortunate to have players who are able to play different roles, and different positions and understand there is an unselfishness to it. When you get down by 10 with seven minutes left we made the right play at the right time and were able to get a good bucket.”

Napheesa Collier (24) UCONN vs Notre Dame (photo by Stephen Slade)
Napheesa Collier

Napheesa is still shooting way below the standards of her shooting percentages but she really impacted the game in many other ways. She played all 40 minutes and scored 15 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, added 3 blocks and a steal. Oh yeah, 3 more assists. The play that personifies Collier was after the run when UConn took their lead. UConn was up 75-70 with 2 minutes remaining when Dangerfield missed a jumper. Collier, starting from the foul line jumped in between two ND players to snag the rebound and give UConn another 30 seconds to kill. Look at the picture I posted above and not the four Notre Dame players around her. They all got a great view of that basket.

“It is always really fun to play a good team. Especially when we have a fourth quarter like we did. I wish we could have played the way we did in the fourth quarter the whole game.”

“With the injuries, it showed how many different players we have that can step up. Everyone did something that contributed to our win, I believe that is more trust building for us knowing we have so many people we can count on.”

Gabby Williams (15) UCONN vs Notre Dame (photo by Stephen Slade)
Gabby Williams

You could tell something was wrong with Gabby from the get go. She just didn't seem herself on the court or on the bench. We found out from Geno that she had  migraine headache. For anyone who has had one, it was a wonder she was playing at all. Word is she had them on and off all week.  Hopefully some time will help her get over this episode. But this is something that Geno and staff will have to monitor and deal with all season. She did manage 17 minutes and had 5 rebounds and 5 assists. But she had only 2 points (the above picture) and was 1-7 from the field. Definitely not Gabby-like.

Megan Walker

Walker got a good taste of the big time and she did herself proud. She didn't score a lot, but in her 16 minutes she had 3 points and 6 rebounds. Those rebounds were huge in helping UConn grab the lead and hold on to it. And her on the ball defense helped hold Notre Dame down in the fourth quarter. She will just keep getting better.

Great job of cheering for these guys. You always hope they learn something they can use when it's their turn!

After UConn's big win I asked Logan to give the Huskies a BIG HAND

*********************************************************************************

OK.....I can breath again! What an amazing comeback by an amazing team. Think about it. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, they were down 11, 65-54, after a three pointer from the corner by ND's Lili Thompson. Katie Lou Samuelson had just left the game for good after tweaking her ankle and UConn had to go with only 5 players the rest of the way. Gabby Williams didn't play a minute in the second half. How confident were you about the Huskies coming back?

All I can say is that was the best comeback by a UConn women's team I've seen in a long time and maybe the best ever based on the situations I mentioned and the opponent.

UConn outscored the Irish 26-6 to finish the game behind a terrific effort by all five players on the court.

Several folks might be wondering what happened to Gabby. Word is she was suffering again from migraines all week and when you looked at her pained expression on the bench, you could tell something was wrong. This will probably be something UConn will have to deal with all season.

Here is my UConn/Notre Dame Post Game Report.

*********************************************************************************

I know I had my doubts, although I wasn't dumb enough publically declare it for everyone to see. Here are a couple of beauties -

"Take Samuelson out at this point. No sense in her risking future injury in a game UConn has no chance of winning."

"No question that ND is the better team, not only tonight, but at this point in the season. Geno will has a feast to pick on from here on to the Dance. Defensive rebounding, pick and roll responsibilities, pace in the offensive zone, covering the perimeter, TO's, lack of urgency, working harder to get open. The list goes on and on. Good for ND. They came to play without excuses and they gave it to UConn good."

I didn't go into the game thread where posters give there opinions real time. I can only imagine the doom and gloom comments.

By David in Naples!!!!!

For the first time this season UConn outplayed their opponent in the 4th quarter. What a great time to do that..!! The victory over Notre Dame was keyed by a 26-9 scoring margin in the final period. And, all this happened with Katie Lou & Gabby on the bench.

The Huskies started the 4th quarter down by 8 and soon fell behind by 11 points. UConn came back to lead with baskets by Megan Walker, Kia Nurse, Crystal and Azura Stevens. No hoops by KLS, Gabby or Pheesa and the Huskies still stormed back over the Irish. Collier did add 4 clutch free throws with the clock running out.

Notre Dame’s leading scorers went cold as Ogunbowale finished 1-10 from three and Mad Dog Mabrey missed her final 5 shots. UConn once again had five players scoring in double figures for w/ balanced points (18, 17, 15, 13 and 12).

Next game is Friday at DePaul.
Go Huskies..!!

Tennessee's OT win over Marquette took a hit Saturday when the Golden Eagles went down to perennial Mid-Major contender Green Bay 63-55. It doesn't say much for the Lady Vol's defense as they gave up 89 points in regulation.

Two more cupcakes and Tennessee will finally play a tough team in No. 2 Texas. Can't wait.

And while I'm hammering at Tennessee, it's just sad how far this program has dropped. Besides their final four drought, their one time WCBB leading attendance figures have dropped precipitously.

Here are their

Central Arkansas - 7311
Wichita State - 7818
James Madison - 7553
East Tennessee State - 8869

That's an average of 7887.  I'm not sure the next two games against Alabama State (RPI 209) and Troy (RPI 106) I'm not sure they will get much more, if that. Texas should bring a great crowd of over 10K. At least that is what you would think.

Here is the numbers for the last 6 years. It's not a good trend.

2016-17 - 9184
2015-16 - 10412
2014-15 - 10375
2013-14 - 11038
2012-13 - 11390
2011-12 - 14414

Here is my UConn/Notre Dame Pre Game Report.

“They’re a great team. This is probably as good a team as they’ve had, and they’ve had a lot of good teams. They just have so many weapons. You can’t lay off anybody. I think everybody you play, no matter how good they are, there’s always one person you can maybe double off of or not worry as much about, but this team has five people that can score the ball pretty much every possession. They play hard, they play well, they play great defensively. … It’s a chance to measure ourselves against the best team in the nation.” — Muffet McGraw.

Yeah, I like my 18+ point spread.

*********************************************************************************

South Florida,  the only other AAC ranked team at No. 17, beat George Washington 83-78. Beating the Colonials by only 5 points doesn't bode well for when UConn plays them later in the season. The Bulls have two great players in Laksa and Jespersen, who scored 27 points and 25 points respectively. Last season, UConn destroyed 102-37, 96-68 and 100-44. Whew.

More to come in my Pre Game report later in the season.

*************************************************************************************************
By David in Naples!!!!!

Geno Auriemma has coached for 33 years at UConn and run the Huskies for 1,132 games. He has 997 victories and very few teams have a winning record against him. Michigan State, an opponent last week, had a 1-1 record against Geno led teams. Now they are 1-2. 8-) Candidly, most of the losses came early in his career when the program was building. Almost no team the Huskies have played lately has even close to a winning record. For example, USF is 0-23 and Cincinnati is 0-16. In fact, Geno is undefeated in the AAC at 70-0 for the regular season.

The only team Geno's Huskies have never defeated is La Salle. Auriemma is 0-3 and not scheduled to play them in the near future. New Hampshire can boast a 1-1 record versus UConn, as can Ball State. No doubt Geno's squad would beat them mercilessly now. Other teams with at least respectable records include North Carolina at 4-7, Baylor at 2-4, and Stanford at 7-11. Arch rival Tennessee is 9-13. :D

Even mightly Notre Dame has a poor record versus Geno. They are 11-34 and winless since Stewie was a freshman. Several other teams have double-digit victories over Geno, but also quite a few defeats. Villanova is 11-36, while Providence is 10-39. The teams Geno has pounded the most are Pittsburgh (4-41), Rutgers (6-34), Syracuse (6-38) and Seton Hall (2-46). Many of those wins were in the days of the old Big East. Finally, the last team to beat Geno, Mississippi State is 1-3, with that semi final game as their only win.  >:D

Go Huskies..!!

What would a Friday night be without a little Logan??!!!!

*********************************************************************************
Friday Nights are always quiet when it comes to WCBB. Only one top 25 game, but the two teams do have a UConn connection.

No. 18 Oregon State is playing Nevada in the Maui Classic.

Nevada is an easy one to figure out the connection. UConn just played them to end their west coast trip and the Wolf Pack put up a great second half effort much to the chagrin of many UConn fans. How will they do in this game? Does that second half propel Nevada to a great game against the Beavers? Or will they have used all their energy against UConn and have that post-Huskie hangover?

The Oregon State connection is more subtle. The Beavers have lost two games this season. One against No. 16 Duke. The other was against Notre Dame, UConn's next opponent. The Irish was down 34-29 at the half before coming back to win 72-67 behind a great effort by Jackie Young. Some takeaways from that game that helped me create my Pre Game Report for the ND game.

1. This is an unusual team for ND and this game showed it with them having only 8 assists on their 30 baskets. Lots of 1-1 play in this game.

2. This was a good game for Mikayla Vaughn (out for the year with an ACL tear) with 8 points and 7 rebounds in 16 minutes. They will miss her size and production against UConn.

3. They only took 4 three point shots. Long range shooting has always been a big part of this team's history.

Here is my UConn/Notre Dame Pre Game Report.

*********************************************************************************

I'm glad I have Katie Lou playing on Sunday in my Pre Game Report. I took a chance and now it is paying off.

Here is a broadcast on the UConn Women's facebook page - Some great stuff.

www.facebook.com/UConnWBB/videos/1115623611873795/

Right around 28:30.

Katie Lou: "Janelle just told me I'm going to have to limit my minutes on Sunday . I'm going to be on a minute count and I don't want to do that. So I figured I'd come right to you and tell you that I don't want to do that."

Geno: "You're saying you don't want to play at all?"

Lou "No. I wanna play the whole game or I don't want to have to come out."

Geno: "Well we'll make that decision when I watch you play. If I think you look good then you'll play a lot. If I don't think you look good, you're not..."

Lou: "Okay, fair enough." ... a little chat ... "But, we are not the same team without her. You can talk all you want about this kid is good, that kid is good ...but, you know...Lou is the only kid we have that bridges that gap between guard and forward....Lou floats between the two and stretches the defense...."

Thanks to Rocky for transposing this for us!

And it looks like Camara is not quite ready yet. I think she needs another couple of weeks.

Here is an interview with Kia Nurse and Katie Lou. You can see the much maligned Lexi Gordon (yes, she is getting crap from UConn fans) hitting three after three and Camara hitting a few medium range jumpers.

By David in Naples!!!!!

As part of our continuing effort to help depressed UConn fans who can't deal with how poorly the Huskies have played in the 2nd half of several games, ;), here is some good news. While these stats will not talk die-hard pessimists of the ledge, it may help some who feel the Notre Dame game will be a 20+ point loss. It will, just not for the Huskies. 8-)

1. Six UConn players are averaging in double figures in scoring. Katie Lou is at 16.5 pts per game (two games). Kia is right behind at 16.2 and Azura is at 14.2. Tied for 4th are Pheesa and Crystal at 14.0 pt per game. Then, 6th and rising is Gabby at 12.2 points per game.
2. Starters are 40-96 from three-point range or 42%. Notre Dame makes 31% of threes.
3. UConn has outscored opponents 159-64 in the 1st period of their first six games. Opponents average less than 11 points scored in the 1st period.
4. In the first half of all six games, UConn has outscored opponents by 144 points or 24 pts per game. :o
5. According to DoggyDaddy, UConn averages 21.3 assists and 12.2 steals per game. ND averages only 16.7 and 6.6 per game in those categories.
6. Katie Lou will play..!! :D
7. UConn is averaging 86.5 pts per game, against some good opponents. Last season, they averaged 87.1 over the whole season. Darn close..!
8. The last time Notre Dame beat the Huskies, Stewie was a freshman.
9. This is a UConn home game and the Huskies have had 4 days since their last game. Plenty of time to rest and gameplan.

Watch for Gabby and Pheesa to have monster games this Sunday..!

Go Huskies..!!

Part 2 - Congrats to Duke for beating a real basketball team, Ohio State 69-60. Well, almost a real team... :)
