Doggy's Doghouse 12/2/18

Happy Hanukkah to all my readers that celebrate the miracle of the Festival of Lights

We had a wonderful time at my daughters house for the first night!!!!

Lighting the Candles

Well, UConn didn't need any miracle against Notre Dame. They only need Christyn Williams and her fellow UConn players.

In a performance that probably surprised everyone but the players, UConn just played a wonderful game in beating the Irish 89-71.

I am going to spend a few hours Monday putting together a full, and I mean full Post Game report. It will be worth the wait. In the meantime, I have a ton of UConn links and David has his usual good look at some of the numbers from the game. Here is a few of my initial thoughts.

They wore black uniforms for the first time ever. It was as if they were going to a funeral. Yep, Notre Dame's!!!!!

I watched a ton of videos of Christyn Williams in High School and this is the first time at UConn that I saw that player for more than a few plays. She is truly the best ambidextrous player I have seen at this level. That makes her so tough to guard.

The other freshman, Olivia Nelson-Ododa, was terrific in her 16 minutes. Great news for the future.

Katie Lou has turned into a great leader. She didn't let a poor shooting first half impact her total game.

Napheesa is a rebounding machine. It takes long arms and great timing to do what she does at 6'1".

Five players in double figures for UConn. All five starters. Same for ND but I don't care about them!!
I'm so proud of this team and I will remind you that I did pick UConn to win this game!!!

There were a bunch of top 25 games and I'll talk about a few of those!!!

*********************************************************************************

There were, of course, several top 25 teams that played cupcakes. BORING. Please try to schedule some competition!!!

No. 3 Oregon vs Long Beach State? 110-48. Pathetic.
No. 5 Louisville vs Tennessee State. 107-52. Disgusting.
No. 7 Maryland vs UMBC. 92-61. Bull Dingy!
No. 12 Syracuse vs Towson. 98-55. Insulting.
No. 13 NC State vs Old Dominion.  85-56. Maybe a good game 30 years ago?
No. 14 Iowa vs Robert Morris. 92-63. Phillip Morris could have done better.
No. 15 California vs CSU Northridge. 67-42. As bad as this was, Cal still only score 67.

*********************************************************************************

No. 11 Tennessee should jump into the top 10 with No. 8 Stanford losing to Gonzaga. They beat unranked Oklahoma State 76-63 behind 29 points from their star sophomore Westbrook. She was 12-15 from the field. Good win you say? Well, let's look deeper at their numbers.

They did shoot 48% from the field but other than Westbrook, they shot only 39%. And as a team they shot 3-18 on threes for 16.8%. They only had 13 assists on their 33 baskets. That is because of both 1-1 play and offensive rebounds. They also had 17 turnovers to go with their 13 assists. A negative ratio.  They were also 7-11 on free throws for 63%.

So, as you can see, it's the same ole Tennessee that can't shoot, and can't pass. But they still win by rebounding and defense. It's just fool's gold.

*********************************************************************************

No. 18 (And dropping) South Carolina lost to No. 4 Baylor at home to fall to 4-4 and 2-2 in Columbia.

The final score was 94-69 and it wasn't even that close. Not to take anything away from Baylor but South Carolina is just not a very good team right now.

They shot only 34.8% from the field and were 4-16 on threes. With 16 turnovers and 11 assists they showed how SEC basketball is really played.

One more overrated team that could be out of the top 25 before too long. Only Dawn's reputation will keep then in there.

I wonder how Aliya Boston feels about her decision to walk into that place after seeing this game and then seeing the UConn/ND game.

I may be the only person who thinks this is interesting, so bear with me. There is a difference between offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds.

An offensive rebound is a good thing that follows a bad thing. The bad thing is you missed the shot. The good thing is you got the ball back. That is different from a defensive rebound, which is a good thing following a previous good thing. They missed their shot (good) and you got the rebound (also good).  ;)

Why does all this matter? Well, in the DePaul game, UConn had more offensive rebounds (14) than DePaul had defensive rebounds (12). That is the first time that has happened this season. Since the Huskies missed only 26 shots, 14 offensive boards is important. It led to 20 second-chance points. Equally important, for the season, the total offensive rebounds (61) are spread out among a number of players.  Pheesa leads the team with 10, which makes sense since she is always crashing the boards. Lou is 2nd with 9. Also very note worthy. But tied for 3rd are Megan and Christyn with 8 each. Of the two, Squeaks is the surprise. How sweet is having your freshman guard come up big on the offensive glass?  :D

The defensive rebound totals are equally impressive. Collier leads with 49, which is awesome. Lou is again 2nd with 28, followed by Megan with 25. Interestingly, Crystal is 4th with 22 offensive boards, vs 2 offensive. Squeaks is 5th with 16. (Keep in mind Christyn is the fast break leaker, so her job is often to head down court after a shot, looking to fast break.) Overall, the team has 179 defensive rebounds. That compares nicely to UConn's opponents 76 offensive boards. When you miss so many shots, opponents are bound to get some 2nd chances.

Rebounding will be key in the Notre Dame game. Watch for UConn's offensive boards. Especially watch Pheesa and Squeaks..!

Go Huskies..!!
