A wet and relatively cold day in Florida. But at least we were in an enclosed pavilion to watch my granddaughter Noa compete in her Cheer competition.

As you can see, they won first place!!!!

It was also great to see my son Jay bond with my grandson and his nephew Logan. So sweet!!!

Eighteen top 25 games Sunday and three of them ended in upsets. But all were outside the top 15 and to tell you the truth, they weren't big upsets. Check out the links in the top 25 section.

Special shout out to Alexis Jones, who had a triple-double for No. 2 Baylor in their win over Iowa. She had 24 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Maybe the best guard in the country.

This is from David in Naples. It wasn't for the Fun with Numbers, but a post on a message board. He nailed it with this one. Thanks for helping me fill my blog with interesting information. Especially when I am so busy in Florida.

Apparently UConn really sucked against Houston. So much so, that a less than Humble fan, at another site, said " If they play the way they did today (except for Gabby), South Carolina will eat their breakfast, lunch and dinner!" Wow, a three course meal at the expense of the Huskies. Wonder if that includes Pie? So how poorly did UConn play?

1. They somehow managed to score 91 points.
2. Kia had 8 assists and 0 turnovers. And 4 steals.
3. Napheesa had a double-double and 5 steals in 26 minutes.
4. For the game, UConn shot 40% from three point range.
5. UConn had 29 assists.
6. Saniya scored 8 points on 50% shooting, had 6 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots.
7. The defense held Houston to 6 points and 10 points in the 1st and 3rd periods & created 25 turnovers.

Well, what about South Carolina, aren't they on a roll and crushing opponents?  Not quite, although they did just beat Georgia. You know, 10-10 Georgia that shot 37% in that game, had just 9 assists and 18 turnovers. But, South Carolina was really good, right? Not quite...

1. South Carolina shot 35% for the game.
2. They missed 14 free throws. ;)
3. Coates and Harris, both starters, were each 0-5.
4. South Carolina missed 11 of their 16 three point shots.
5. Davis went 2-11 from the field and missed 4 of her 6 free throws.
6. South Carolina fouled 15 times and Coates and Harris had 4 each.
7. South Carolina scored 11 points in the 1st period, 12 in the 2nd and then really cranked it up for 13 in the 3rd.

It is both sad and amazing what passes for analysis for some UConn fans. The South Carolina game is in Storrs and I hear it is "Bring your own food".... 8-)

And another from David -

The list for UConn's top scoring sophomores has all the usual suspects. Leading the pack with 777 points is Breanna Stewart. Just behind Stewie is Maya at 754 points and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis with 670. Kerry Bascom (656) and Nykesha Sales (596) round out the top five. D.T. and Svetlana come in tied for 6th at 564 points.

Shea Ralph and Kara Wolters are on the list, tied for 9th & 10th with 503 points. Current UConn sophomores Katie Lou and Napheesa are moving up, close behind at 431 for KLS and 376 for Pheesa. Before reaching the two tied with 503, KLS needs to pass Renee Montgomery at 479 and Rebecca Lobo at 484.

Of interest, the top three on the list had per game averages of 19.4, 19.3 and 17.6. Katie Lou is currently averaging 21.6 per game.

Go Katie Lou and Pheesa..!!

By David in Naples!!!!!

1. Fun with Numbers quiz - Name the top three players in UConn season scoring average?  Hint, the list does not include Stewie, D.T., Tina or Sue Bird.

It does include Maya (22.8), Kerry Bascom (22.6) and Katie Lou Samuelson (21.6). KLS would have to drop to 20.9 points per game to fall out of 3rd place.

2. Fun with Numbers quiz #2 - Name the only player among the top six season scoring average leaders to appear three times. Hint, it is not Maya. Kerry Bascom is 2nd, 5th (20.5) and 6th (20.0).

Maya shows up again in 9th place with an average of 19.3 pts per game. Stewie should be 7th and 8th at 19.4 points per contest in her Senior and Sophomore seasons.

3. Fun with Numbers quiz #3 - Do any other current players appear in the top 10 season scoring list?

Heading into the Houston game, Napheesa Collier was 10th with an average of 19.2 per game.

4. Fun with Numbers quiz #4 - UConn is currently 20-0. How many times before have the Huskies been 20-0.

The correct answer is 10.

Go Huskies..!!

I had a late start watching the UConn/Houston game and read some comments on the UConn message board before I watched the game that got me worried. Talk of a bad game, slow start, unusually inattentive to details, on and on.......

I figured they were in a battle with a terrible Houston team. Then I watched the game.

Yes, UConn got off to a slow start. They were actually behind in a game. A rare occurrence this season. It was only 6-4 Houston, but it was almost 5 minutes into the game. Then, in spite of all the early issues, UConn went on a 21 point  run and the rout was on.

So, no.....Houston didn't keep the game close, and no, UConn didn't play a terrible game. In some ways they were just going through the motions, but their motions are better than anyone else's motions and they ended up winning 91-42.

I'll have more in my post game report if I can get to it. My granddaughter has a Cheer competition tomorrow and the day starts early and ends late.

The next game is against the Temple Owls, one of the best teams in the AAC and coached by former UConn coach Tonya Cardozza.

******************************************************************************

Speaking of Temple, they are playing South Florida Sunday at noon on CBSSN. Tune in if you want to see the two best teams in the AAC play....well....other than UConn.

Can Temple stay undefeated in the AAC and stake their claim to the second spot right behind UConn? The Owls come into this game on a 12 game winning streak. Why aren't they in the top 25?

If they beat USF, they should be ranked for the UConn game.

By David in Naples!!!!!

For some dumb reason, today's noon start prevented UConn's normal shoot around. The 1st quarter box score reflected the lack of a shooting warm up. The Huskies missed 14 of 20 shots, including all 5 threes. Katie Lou and Saniya went a combined 0-3 and finished the quarter scoreless. Gabby and Kia had 15 points to carry the Huskies.

By the end of the game, UConn had recovered and warmed up. For the final three quarters, the Huskies went 30-54 or 56%. They hit 8-15 from three point range, 53%. KLS and Saniya scored 24 points and five players scored in double figures.

Note to the schedule planners. No more noon starts..!

Go Huskies..!!

We had a great time at the West Palm Beach Zoo today. My grandson really enjoyed the animals. He was so wide eyed!!!

Here is my UConn/Houston Pre Game Report. No surprises in this game.

******************************************************************************

In some great news, it's being reported that Crystal Dangerfield will be back for the Temple game after sitting out one more game Saturday against Houston. I'm sure she was chomping at the bit to get back on the court. And while UConn has been winning big against the AAC teams they have met while she was out, UConn really needs her to come back. Especially Sanyia Chong, who has been logging big minutes in her absence.

According to sources, she took part in the Huskies' "five spot" drill that ends each practice.

Crystal brings great quickness, penetrating ability and a the ability to find the open player. I'm hoping that her sitting for several games will give her a different look at how to play. Can't wait to see her back in action!!!!

******************************************************************************

I linked an article from the Daily Cougar entitled "Cougars aim to end Huskies’ streak ".

It struck me so funny, that I had to see how exactly Houston was aiming to win this game.

It's basically an article describing UConn and some of their players. Then they wrote this -

"The Cougars have been outscored by The Huskies 84.3–34.7 over their past three contests."

Boy, they better have a great game plan, huh.

Then they ended it with this -

"If the Cougars hope to get anything going against the Huskies, they will have to shoot lights-out. UConn has a distinct size advantage and Houston has trouble rebounding when not playing the best team in the nation."

Lol....they struggle to rebound even against teams that are not the best team in the nation. Gotta love the honesty here.

I think the writer could have come up with a better title for this article.

By David in Naples!!!!!

The five most important and telling statistics in UConn's season, so far, are as follows:

1. The Huskies have 426 assists vs only 193 for opponents. This advantage reflects more than just better shooters playing for the Huskies. UConn players pass the ball more and get better shots. When better players get better shots, more go in. The 426 assists, in half a season, is 22.4 per game. Last season the Huskies averaged 21.6 per game.

2. UConn has made 42% of their three point attempts. The Huskies have made 150 three point baskets on 357 tries. When you try 18.7 threes per game, and make 42% of them, it brings the defense out away from the basket. Opponents have tried 381 threes, but make only 25.7% of their attempts. 8-)

3. The offense is scoring 85.3 points per game. The big fear after the Big 3 graduated, was where this year's points would come from. Four UConn starters average about 22, 19, 13 and 12 points per game. Three more combine to score 18 per game. That comes to 84 per game. Last season, these four starters averaged 36 per game and the other three scored 9 per game. So players who scored 45 points per game last season score 84 this year. :D

4. The Core Four starters have started all 19 games. Add in that Saniya has started 16 games and the line up has been very consistent game to game. The first five for the Huskies play fabulous together at both ends of the court.

5. UConn's defense is made of interchangeable parts. The first five can cover any opponent on the floor. Prove of this is that opponents shoot 25.7% from three and 35.2% overall. Even free throw defense is stellar at 62.8%. These defensive stats are great despite playing 8 ranked teams. They will improve further in the remaining AAC games.

Go Huskies..!!
