Here is my UConn/Houston Pre Game Report. No surprises in this game.

******************************************************************************
Lot's of games tonight in the top 25 and there were some interesting games. One specifically made me take out the good ole UGGY award!

Of all the top teams that played Thursday night was No. 3 Maryland, who beat up on a lousy team in Illinois, 94-49. They showed off their depth, playing 12 players and everyone one of them had 5 points or more and only two had double digits.

No. 4 South Carolina beat Georgia 62-44 in a game that looked like a great UGGY candidate in the first half. I believe both teams shot under 30% at the half and the score was 23-15. Blech. The Gamecocks were able to put GT away with a 26-14 final quarter. A'ja Wilson continued her excellent play with 19 points and 11 rebounds along with 3 assists and 2 blocks. The other piece of the twin towers did not fair as well. There was talk recently by SC fans that Coates is a 1st team AA. The argument was that she does what she is good at better than anyone else in the country, using her size to control the paint. And sometimes that is true. But this game showed why she is a very good player, but not a great player. 0-5 from the field and 1-4 from the line. Her defense was excellent, but a one way player should not be an AA. South Carolina's shooting percentages were terrible. 35% from the field, 31% on threes and 55% on free throws. The more I see this team, the less impressed I am.

In the best game of the night, at least competition wise, No. 8 Notre Dame was able to squeak one out at home against No. 14 Duke 62-58. Brianna Turner was fabulous in this game with 25 points, 12 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. She was the only Irish player in double digits. I'm sure Muffett was not happy with how the offense ran. They shot only 39% from the field and they were 3-16 on threes. Duke gave it a good go and Lexi Brown was great, scoring 22 points. But it wasn't enough.

Ok, the moment you have been waiting for! It's when I unveil the winner of the most coveted award in WCBB. And in an all world effort, this is maybe the most deserving team of all time. It's not just the numbers. No, even though they are the worst ever, it's also the additional embarrassment that this particular team is ranked in the top 25 at No. 17.

Now, I have been posting about how over-ranked this team was early in the season. Even at 15-0, I felt VT was a product of their really weak schedule. They then lost to Miami, squeaked by a lousy Wake Forest team, and then lost to Duke by 25 and FSU by 28. That was pretty bad. And yet they were still ranked No. 17.

So, they came into Thursday nights game with unranked Virginia desperate for a win. They will have three ranked teams in the next 5 games. So, how did they do? You can guess, can't you...lol.

In maybe the worst performance by a ranked team in history, the Hokies were destroyed by Virginia 76-27. No, that is not a misprint. Not only did they lose by 49 points, they only scored 27 points. Let's take a closer look at the numbers.

How did they shoot from the field overall? 12-64. That's an amazing 18.8%.
And how about three point shooting? How does 2-29 strike you? Nauseous? That's 6.9%.
I'm sure they did better from the foul line. Uhh.....not really. They were 1-7.
They had 3 assists and 16 turnovers.
Their scoring players had 8, 7, 4, 4, 2 , 2 points.

So, based on all this info, this was the easiest pick for me for the UGGY award. And I am declaring that this is the worst performance of all time by a ranked team.

Congrats Virginia Tech......You earned it!

Fun with Numbers goes into the 100's for tonight's stats. Consider:

1. Both Gabby and Pheesa have over 100 defensive rebounds, 106 for Collier and 108 for Williams.
2. Gabby has 102 assists. (She had 101 in her first two seasons combined.)
3. Natalie now has 104 points for a 5.5 point average per game.
4. Kyla Irwin has now played 124 minutes this season. (7.8 per game)
5. Katie Lou has taken 150 three point shots. (Made 69 or 46%)
6. Napheesa has 151 baskets to lead the team. (66.5%)
7. UConn has 195 steals in 19 games. (Opponents have 141)

Next Saturday the Huskies play Houston at the XL Center in Hartford. It should be a good game for UConn and full of more fun stats..!!

Go Huskies..!!
