Ok....here is my golf report. I played with my cousin Norman at Palm Beach National in Lake Worth. Boy did I ever struggle on the front nine. Just couldn't hit good shots. I managed a terrible 49. I had NO pars and a triple bogie. UGLY!!!! It started to rain on the ninth hole and then it poured for 30 minutes. We waited it out and then played the back nine. I guess I needed the rain delay.
I had a bogie on the 10th hole, pars on 11, 12, 13 and 14. I had a bogie on 15 and then had pars on 16, 17 and 18. That led to a 38 on the back nine for a round of 87.
49-38? Talk about Jekyll and Hyde!!!

I hope to have a complete post game report, but here are a few thoughts in UConn's 90-45 win over East Carolina.
The "Core Four" (being a Yankee fan, I really don't like that phrase - Jeter, Pettitte, Posada and Rivera were the "Core Four") were terrific in this game with all four scoring in double digits led by Napheesa Collier with 21 in only 25 minutes. Gabby Williams had 12 points in the first quarter and ended up with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in her 26 minutes. Katie Lou played a tam leading 28 minutes scoring 15 points. And Kia Nurse played 26 minutes scoring 14 points. The low minutes should help settle the nerves of some UConn fans.
The bench of Dangerfield, Butler, Bent and Irwin played well, scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter with only the occasional starter playing with them.
Butler was the fifth player with double digit scoring. She looked good in her 18 minutes scoring 12 points on 5-6 shooting, and going 2-2 from the free throw line. She also grabbed 6 rebounds and only one turnover. Much better performance for her.
Dangerfield played 24 minutes but is still struggling, making several unforced errors. But she did have 4 assists. Molly played a solid 16 minutes, flying all over the court. She grabbed 4 rebounds and handed out 3 assists. She added a steal and had no turnovers. I'd love to see her take some shots. She just doesn't seem to want to take them.
Kyla Irwin got plenty of minutes. I think she set a record being involved in 3 separate plays that ended as jump balls in just a few minutes. But she looked so much more comfortable out there. In her 11 minutes, she had 5 points and 3 rebounds. She did have 3 turnovers as well.
The game went as expected and how almost all of the AAC games will go.
South Florida is next to try to tie the 90 game winning streak record.

* Boy, was I wrong about the Baylor at West Virginia game. Baylor put the hammer to the Mountaineers 91-56. The Bears were led by Alexis Jones, who scored 21 points and 6 rebounds and Kawani Brown, who added 16 points and 11 rebounds, most in the first half. Baylor is a really really good team. I don't want UConn to meet them in the Final Four. Looking at their schedule, I can only see Texas being any competition for Baylor. It's possible they end up 32-1 going into the NCAA tournament.
* I watched some of No. 22 South Florida/Tulane game and came away pretty unimpressed with the Bulls in this 62-53 win. They were held to 6 points in the 2nd quarter and looked a little slow both offensively and defensively. More in my UConn/USF pre game report coming soon to a blog near you!
* One of my new favorite teams, No. 25 Kansas State, took No. 20 Oklahoma to overtime before losing 85-80.

After 13 tough, out of conference games, UConn has only two players with double-doubles. Both Gabby and Napheesa have three double digit scoring and rebound games this year. Nobody else on the Huskies has even one this season. For her career, Gabby now has 12 double-doubles. Collier had one last season and has four in her career. All 16 of their double-doubles have been in points and rebounds. On the current roster, only Saniya Chong and Natalie Butler have a career double-double at UConn.
For the season, Katie Lou came closest to a double-double in the DePaul game. She actually had 16 points and 7 assists, as well as 7 rebounds. Three more assists or 3 more rebounds would have given her the double-double. Three more of both would have resulted in the elusive triple-double.
Tonight's game is being played at the XL Center where UConn is 157-13 lifetime. The consecutive win streak is 88 and counting.
Go Huskies..!!

I like your daily blogs. I was interested to see your comment about not wanting to play Baylor in the final four. I know I think we should want to play the best to win.
ReplyDeleteLast year I was disappointed we had three first timers and not the three other number 1 seeds.
I totally see your point. Playing the best is ok. But I always like the easiest path to the championship.
