Doggy's Doghouse 11/29/18

*********************************************************************************

Please read the articles I linked in the UConn section about UConn recruiting. Especially the Mike Anthony article in the Courant. He really puts it all in perspective. A perspective that so many on the UConn message boards and even some of my faithful Facebook readers as well.

“...You just go through some cycles, you know, where the kid you want is a long shot,” Auriemma said. “They say ‘Well why don’t you take some other kids?’ I don’t want them. But you have to do something, so we’ve got a really good player. Aubrey Griffin’s really good. She fits us perfectly. And then other kids, for whatever reason, you just don’t get them… Sometimes you don’t, and this was one of those years that we didn’t. That doesn’t mean next year we won’t.”

There is not much more that I can add to this discussion. I'm really tired of the attention that recruiting has gotten when we have such a wonderful team to watch and root for THIS season. There is a big game for the Huskies Sunday. Maybe it's time to talk about the Notre Dame game? They are destroying No. 14 Iowa in similar fashion that UConn destroyed No. 15 DePaul. It should be a great game when No. 1 and No. 2 meet!

*********************************************************************************

Notre Dame really poured it on Iowa winning 105-71 and they made it look easy. In some ways they are a mirror image of UConn. They have great starters and play them often with the bench there to only give the occasional blow when the game is still in doubt.

But unlike UConn, who loves to pass the ball around, Notre Dame is different this season. They love to put up a ton of shots.

One note - I can only imagine the screaming from UConn fans if they had played three starters 4 minutes into the fourth quarter with a 30+ point lead, and two starters still in with 3 minutes left in the game. That is what Notre Dame did. It's a good reason why they had 105 points and UConn "settled" for 99.

Here is my UConn/Notre Dame Pre Game Report.

*********************************************************************************

Well, another ranked SEC loses. No. 17 Texas A&M lost to unranked Lamar 74-68. Lamar has played another ranked SEC team in Mississippi State and lost 104-53. Is Texas A&M that bad? Well, they did play their best player, Chennedy Carter. I haven't been able to find out why she didn't play. Injury? Discipline? I'm sure that made a difference but still. Another instance of an overrated SEC team losing to an unranked team. They next play AAC team Houston on the road. The Cougars are not a bad team, so it should be interesting to see how the Aggies bounce back. Another loss in this game and maybe they are bounced from the Top 25.

I had so much fun with Logan Wednesday. Looks like he had a good time too.

*********************************************************************************

Doug Bruno limped into this game (he was on crutches) and DePaul limped out after the Huskies put the hammer to the Blue Demons 99-63. It was close for a few minutes with the score 16-15 UConn, but after a 24-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters, it was all over.

UConn was led by Napheesa Collier with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists and Katie Lou Samuelson with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Samuelson was 5-6 on threes. All five starters were in double digits and the bench did a really good job in this game both giving the starters a blow and then finishing out the game. They had 12 points, 9 rebounds and two assists.

Geno was pretty happy other than the 5 minutes at the start of the third quarter when DePaul score something like 18 points. The defense was excellent as they held DePaul to 33% shooting and 12-44 on threes. They also outrebounded DePaul 46-24, a great sign for future success.

On to Notre Dame on Sunday in what should be a barnburner!!!!

*********************************************************************************

No. 1 recruit announced her future college today and it wasn't UConn to the chagrin of the Huskie fans. Haley Jones decided on Stanford and it really wasn't a surprise.

She lives literally down the road and you can't get a better education. It's great to see Stanford stay in the upper echelon of WCBB. Tara is a great coach and should do very well with Jones to lead the way.

So, it looks like UConn will have only Aubrey Griffin in their 2019 class. That gives UConn a roster of only 10 players next season of which only three have been in UConn's regular rotation. This should be quite the challenge for Geno.

But don't cry for UConn. They will still bring back a #4, #1, #1, and #5 HS recruits from prior years. Nothing to sniff at.

I have a feeling that Geno might peruse the 5th year players to add a little size. Time will tell.

*********************************************************************************

Another bubble was burst when No. 23 Iowa State lost to unranked South Dakota 64-59 in the only upset in the top 25 Wednesday night.

ISU had beaten ranked Miami in their 6 victories, but other than that, they were a paper tiger, beating some really bad teams. I don't think we will see them back in the top 25 again soon, as I'm sure they will drop out next week.

Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson are best friends and the best players on the UConn roster this season. They have very interesting career highs in various statistics. For example, Pheesa's career high in points is 39 vs USF. Katie Lou's high is 40 points, also against USF. Both have matching highs in assists with 9 vs St. Francis, in the same game. That is where the similarities end. Collier's rebounding high is 16 vs SMU, while KLS reached only 9 vs Tulane. Napheesa has a high of 6 blocks in a game twice while Lou had 2 blocks three times.

Collier has started 83 games going into tonight's contest. Samuelson has 91 starts. Interestingly, Pheesa has 24 double-doubles while Lou has only 1. On the other hand, Katie Lou made 10 threes in a game against USF while Pheesa has only 2 threes as a career high. Clearly, they both score from all over the court, but Lou is a sharpshooter while Napheesa makes a living down in the trenches. Collier sits #17 in scoring at UConn with 1,695 points. Lou is ahead at #13 with 1,809 total points.

Go Huskies..!!

I'm grateful that there are no games to talk about and my UConn/DePaul Pregame Report is done.

A long day with a beautiful baby boy!! Barrett was great today, and a lot of fun. But it's exhausting!!! And I know my daughter reads this so don't worry honey, I'll still be there tomorrow!

So happy after a nap!!!

Having fun at Target!!!!

In a brief text to David last week I vented about posts on the UConn message board complaining about UConn's recruiting and how doomed the program is. I said to him, these people are just fans of winning and not fans of UConn. David, with his usual look at these things, put it into perspective:

"If you are a fan of winning, all that matters is winning. Effort, heart and game circumstances are irrelevant. Anything short of winning is bad. It also matters how you win. Winning ugly is almost as bad as losing. It has to be perfect or you complain. There are lots of fans of winning who think they are fans of UConn. They are not..."

"If you are a fan of UConn, you always look first for the positives from any game. Winning is great, but effort, heart and the other team's play impact your outlook. You can expect to win, but you don't trash the team just because the Huskies lost. You remain grateful for the great play and winning is the icing on the cake. And there is always lots of cake & icing..."

David hit it on the head. Of course these folks would all deny this description of their fandom. Too bad!!! It's my blog!

On the UConn recruiting front, Aubrey Griffin has sent her LOI to Geno!!! Ranked 33 by ESPN in the 2019 class, Griffin brings a ton of talent to this team next year. She was injured her entire sophomore season, so I think that impacted her rankings. But boy, did she ever make it up her junior year. She averaged 28.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 2.9 APG, 3.2 steals, and 1.6 blocks and was a finalist for the U18 national team. At 6'1" she has a game very similar to Swin Cash and I expect her to make an impact next year.

Her dad is Adrian Griffin, currently the top assistant coach to the NBA's Toronto Raptors. He had a great career at Seton Hall where he was a three year starter. He played in The League for 6 years. Not bad for a non-drafted player. I am telling you about him because it's a direct reflection on his daughter. I love having coaches kids. Now, while she did not play for him, you don't become an NBA coach without having great knowledge of the game and I'm sure he passed that along to Aubrey. And the hard working attitude? You can bet she has that.

She is one more player from Ossining HS in upstate NY. UConn previously had Chong and Espinoza-Hunter (who transferred to Mississippi State) on their roster.

Enjoy the video. I love her long arms!!!

Well, Wednesday is a huge day for UConn recruiting. Haley Jones, the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2019, will announce her college choice. She is down to UConn, Stanford, South Carolina and Notre Dame.

The sourpusses on the UConn message board say no way. She will go to Stanford. I was burnt by Boston last week choosing South Carolina. I think I'll just wait and see. I'm hopeful.

Useless but interesting trivia.

* UConn plays DePaul on Wednesday night, which means Geno faces one of his best friends, Doug Bruno. The two have met 15 times and Geno has never lost. That's right, 15-0 against Bruno's teams. Not very friendly... 8-)

* Napheesa Collier is averaging a double-double in points and rebounds (17.2 pts & 10 rebs.) For her career, she has 24 total double-doubles. Katie Lou Samuelson has 1 career double-double.

* Megan Walker wears uniform #3. Previous players who wore that number are Morgan Tuck, Tiff Hayes, Diana Taurasi, Tammy Arnold and Shea Matlock.

* Geno's first win was against Iona on November 23, 1985.  He now has 1,027 wins.

* The state with the most players on the UConn roster is Georgia (2). Mikayla Coombs and Olivia Nelson-Ododa are those players.

* Katie Lou and Pheesa both have 34 baskets & Crystal and Megan both have 25 baskets. Christyn has 18 baskets.

* The Huskies have outscored opponents 113-52 in the first period. That 61 point difference comes out to 12.2 pts per game.

Go Huskies..!!
