Doggy's Doghouse 1/23/19

UConn beat up on SMU Wednesday night 79-39 in a game that should have had that 50 point margin I predicted. Ok, 40 points is good enough, but I like being closer in the final margin!

The Huskies had another slow start before pouring it on late in the 1st quarter. Other than the ugly fourth quarter (8-4 UConn), the Huskies had a very nice game. They were still a little off on their shooting, but this might have been their best passing game of the season. UConn had 26 assists on their 31 baskets, led by Dangerfield with 8 assists and only one late turnover. The two seniors, Collier and Samuelson led the team in scoring with 22 and 21 points respectively.

Geno was really happy with the team defense in his halftime interview and I'm sure he was happy with the bench defense only giving up 4 points in the fourth quarter.

Walker scored only 11 points but she was 3-3 on threes and played an overall solid game with 4 rebounds and 3 steals. And I thought Williams looked like she was closer to breaking through that freshmen wall with 12 points and 3 assists along with 3 steals.

Up next is Central Florida, the second place team so far in the AAC. They beat East Carolina 61-58 in overtime Wednesday night to go to 17-2 and 6-0 in the AAC. They have only lost to a ranked Syracuse team 57-52 and Central Michigan 75-68. They beat this same SMU team by only 11 points, 54-43. They won't score more than 50 against UConn. Can they hold UConn down in scoring to make it a game? Doubtful.

Speaking of Syracuse, the No. 13 Orange was upset by unranked Miami 84-71. Miami took a big lead after a big second quarter and held off a few Syracuse rallies. This game is another example of parity in WCBB outside the tippety top teams.

In a minor upset No. 14 Rutgers was beaten by No. 17 Iowa 72-66. After all the good things being said about the Scarlet Knights, you just knew they would be in line for a loss.

How to win a game by halftime. Here is what UConn did to SMU.

1. Only have 1 turnover while your opponent has 16.
2. Have Napheesa score 16 points while SMU scores 16 as a team.
3. Assist on 14 of your 18 baskets.
4. Grab 11 steals and only give up 1 yourself.
5. How the other guys to 7 baskets while you score 17.
6. Get Pheesa to block 4 shots in just 20 minutes.
7. Make 5 threes while SMU makes only 2.

This game was probably over at the end of 1 period. But, by half it was 46-16 and SMU was dead.

Go Huskies..!!

  1. Yes! Still a ways to go but you know Geno & Co will get them there. Better D with a return of among other things cutting off the passing lanes. Better passing and isn't it eyeopening as how goes shooting %'s so goes Assists

The beginning of the return to normalcy. Nice to see
