GO UCONN!!!!!

UConn 111 Toronto Metropolitan University 34

I started this game write-up a few times. I just struggled to figure out what direction to take. But I have to, of course, start with Aaliyah Edwards. In her homecoming game, Edwards was just terrific once she got rid of her jitters. Who could blame her for having early nerves.

I'll mention it once and then move on. The stats for the players are partially reflective of the weak opponent.

Aaliyah scored 26 points in 24 minutes. She was 9-13 from the field, 8-9 on free throws, and grabbed 10 rebounds for her double double. A triple double if you count her smiles.

Nika and Paige were just happy giving the spotlight to Aaliyah and the freshmen. Nika played her fewest minutes of the season with 19 and didn't score but had 8 assists and only 1 turnover. She added 2 steals. Paige only played 21 minutes and scored 11 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. And another block.

Geno basically gave Aubrey Griffin the night off. She only played 13 minutes where she had 5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a block. Good move in resting her. These kinda low minutes help save her for later in the season.

The end of the bench got some good minutes. Not all productive but good to see them on the court.

Ina Bettencourt looks comfortable at the point whenever she is in the game. In 18 minutes she only had 3 points, but she also had 4 assists. Nice.

Amari DeBerry, inspired by a fan holding a sign for her, was way more aggressive in this game than any other time this season. She had 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists a steal and a block in 15 minutes. She had post moves that we haven't seen her even attempt.

Ice, oh Ice. Please just relax and play your game. She just seems tight on the court but you can see the possibilities in her game. She played 15 minutes, was 1-5 from the field, 1-4 on free throws, and 3 rebounds. She does set a mean screen. The Huskies need more.

Ok...on to the story of the game other than Edwards great homecoming night. The three true freshman we just outstanding in this game.

Q looked like the Q we saw early in the season. Not as lost on the court, she hit some really nice long range shots. I love her corner three. Great rotation on the ball. In her 20 minutes she went 7-9 from the field, 3-4 on threes, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. She added a block and a steal. A really nice stat line for her. The hope is always a game like this restores her confidence in herself and Geno's confidence in her. I'd love to see her back in the regular rotation.

Ashlynn hit her first 8 shots, missed her last two and stopped shooting. But boy, was she en fuego! For the game she was 8-10 from the field, 4-6 on threes, she added 3 assists and finished with 20 point for her second consecutive 20+ point game.

KK was the KK we all thought she would be in this game. She was all over the court on both offense and defense. She played 30 minutes, scored 21 points, went 10-12 from the field, 1-2 on threes, 3 assists and a big 7 steals. She was everywhere!

Just a fun game for the team. A well deserved easy win and now a well deserved long break before wading in the deep end of the Big East with games against ranked Marquette and Creighton. Two game that will tell us a lot about this UConn team.

Little Q

You can see UConn recruit Morgan Cheli in the championship game against this really good LuHi team, the No. 1 HS team in the country.

Straight from the Dog

I didn't think it would be that fast but two games ago I said that UConn would soon be over 50% from the field and over 80 PPG. I was thinking sometime during the weak part of the Big East schedule.

Well, between Butler and the stats counting for the TMU game, it appears they have already made it.

Right now they are shooting 50.7% from the field and 81.83 PPG. That number could go up even more eventually. Their three point shooting is now up to 38.3%.

From a brilliant UConn fan - "Now Uconn looks more like Villanova and Marquette. Huskies will have to go unbeaten in BE and beat both ND and SC to get back to anywhere near top 5 or 6. Tough to make up for early losses . It is what it is ."

What a dumb thing to say. In what way is Uconn like Villanova and Marquette? Please tell me. It's not even close. Especially this year if you are comparing Villanova. And Marquette is a nice story this year going undefeated at this point, but to compare them to UConn is well, crazy talk?

Let's talk again after the Marquette and Creighton games, the next two on the Huskies schedule.

Milestone watch

• Aaliyah Edwards had 1374 career points after the Butler game. She scored 26 in the Toronto Metropolitan game to reach an even 1400, She passed Sue Bird, Carla Berube, Jamelle Elliot, and Leigh Curl, moving into 34th place. She needs just two points to tie Tamika Williams, nine points to tie Chris Gedney, and 13 to tie Peggy Walsh.

• Nika Mühl had 484 assists after the Butler game. She had 8 assists in the Toronto Metropolitan game to reach 492 assists. She is now in 14th place. She needs 39 to catch Laura Lishness in 13th place, who has 531 career assists.

SPIDER STATS

Plus one for every assist block point rebound and steal. I don’t add extra for offensive rebounds as it already seems to favor the bigs. Minus one for every missed shot (2, 3 or foul), turnover or foul committed.
