GO UCONN!!!!!

No. 9 UConn Huskies                                        Georgetown Hoyas
69                                                                            39

One player returns and another one leaves. First the injury report. Carolina Ducharme took a shot to the head and went down hitting her head on the floor. Of course. She was helped to the locker room, came back to the bench in sweat pants to sit on the bench with an ice pack on her head.

“I’ve never seen a kid have the circumstances happening to her that she’s been under,” Auriemma said. “I think we’ll know more later today, tonight, tomorrow morning. But Caroline said she wants to play (Sunday) and right now we’re going under the assumption that she will, unless we find something to the contrary tonight or tomorrow morning.”

That sounds positive so I'll just go with her as a definate maybe. She wants to play so she must be feeling ok.

The returning player is as good a report as I can give. Azzi Fudd played 16 minutes, looked a little rusty, but then slowly regained her bearings. Just watching her move around the court, you have to be encouraged.

And you have to be encouraged by UConn's overall play even with such a poor shooting performance. The talk has been about what Fudd could bring to the table offensively and what the four days off will do for their offensive play. But it was clearly the defensive end they worked on. They looked in sync as opposed to the missed assisgnments of the past few games.

Now, Georgetown is far from a good offensive team. In fact they are pretty weak. But the numbers are just astounding for the first half.

1st quarter - 3-23 17.8%,  0-9 on threes.
2nd quarter - 1-13 7.9%, 0-6 on threes.

That's 4-34 from the field and 0-15 on threes. That's 12 points for the half.

That's Domination.

It's a quick turnaround before the Marquette rematch Sunday at 3:00. So this won't be a long postgame report.

Even though it was only in 16 minutes, the return of Fudd is the story of the game.  She managed 16 minutes and looked really good in her movements on the court. She started out 0-3 on threes but the went
2-3 to finish her time on the court. For the game she had 10 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists and only 1 turnover.  I've always felt that her absence is a big reason that UConn has had so many turnovers on the season. With her back, the Huskies only had 13 for the game.

UConn had 2 players with double doubles. Edwards looked more like the early season player with 19 points and 13 rebounds. She was big in the pain with 4 blocks. And she only had 1 turnover after a few games of big time sloppyness. Juhasz had 13 points and 10 rebounds, hit a three pointer and handed out 3 assists. Another solid game for Dorka.

Lou had a very good game with 14 points going 2-5 on threes and Griffin came close to her own double double with 7 points and 11 rebounds. She had a tough shooting game for sure.

Geno did a great job limiting the minutes of the starters with playing 33, 32, 32, 28 and 26 minutes. They will need every bit of energy to win against Marquette. We all remember the last time these two teams played. They broke UConn's streak of games without losing two in a row with a 59-51 win over the Huskies. I'm sure the UConn players remember it very well.

More on that game in my UConn/Marquette Pregame Report.

Blowout win for Germantown to move on to state.

KK Arnold: 38 points (12-20 FG, 5-7 3-PT, 9-10 FT), 12 rebs, 9 assists

Allie Ziebel won't be joining KK at the state tourney as Neenah lost today. Ziebell took a hard fall on her wrist before halftime, was down a minute or so, and left the game. She would return in the 2nd half to help cut into a 19-pt lead but it wasn't enough.

Ziebell: 26 points (10-20 FG, 0-3 3-PT, 6-9 FT), 7 rebs

GAMES

Straight from the Dog

Let's talk about the Big East first.

Marquette won the UConn sweepstakes with their win over St. John's. UConn killer Chloe Marotta had 18 points and 14 rebounds and Jordan King and Liza Karlen added 16 each. The Golden Eagles put the clamps on the Johnnies in the fourth quarter, holding them to six points to pull away in the last 5 minutes.

Villanova and DePaul played a classic. The Wildcats were fouled with .7 remaining and hit the one foul shot they needed to get the win and a match up with either Creighton or Seton Hall. The foul? Kinda questionable. I don't think you have the game decided by a questionable call. I feel bad for Dough Bruno and his Blue Demons. Villanova came within a whisker in joining the group below. Fortunate for them Depaul missed 4 free throws in the last 1:30.

What a crazy day!!! There were a bunch of Top 20 losses so far this weekend and almost all were upsets.

No. 2 Indiana lost to No. 14 Ohio State
No. 3 Utah lost to unranked Washington State
No. 4 LSU lost to unranked Tennessee
No. 5 Maryland lost to No. 7 Iowa
No. 6 Stanford lost to No. 19 UCLA
No. 10 Notre Dame to unranked Louisville
No. 13 Duke lost to No. 8 Virginia Tech
No. 20 Colorado to unranked Washington State

I have NO idea how the rankings will look on Monday. Not a clue. UConn could move up. If they win the BE. But that would be after the poll comes out on Monday. So who cares...lol.

More importantly, how do these games impact the seeding of these teams? I'm glad it's not my call.

Indiana was a 1 seed before the loss
Stanford was a 1 seed before the loss
Utah was a 1 seed before the loss
Maryland was a 2 seed before the loss
LSU was a No. 2 seed before the loss
Duke was a 3 seed before the loss
Notre Dame was a 4 seed before the loss
Colorado was a 5 seed before the loss

This is pretty much insane. And all of these losses were BEFORE the conference championship games.

There will be a few more chances for upsets on Sunday.

Marquette and No. 9 UConn (I just spit...poo poo poo)
Tennessee and No. 1 South Carolina
No. 14 Ohio State and No. 7 Iowa

Parity is here!!

Just a few comments on some of the games.

Of course I have to talk about Tennessee's big win against LSU 69-67. They did a great job coming back from an early 17 point deficit. LSU had no clue what to do at the end of the game once they lost the lead. The Lady Vols won, but inside their stats? Ugly. 38% from the field, 2-11 on threes, 17 turnovers. It was their terrific foul shooting that carried the day for Tennessee. 21-25.

I have them in the UGGY section, but Notre Dame is always fun to pile on. They were just destroyed by Louisville 64-38. Wow! It was never close. The Cardinals held the Irish to single digit scoring in the first three quarters. And not one Notre Dame player reached double digit scoring. To be fair they lost their point guard Olivia Miles in the game before. Ah...forget fair. Piss poor job by Notre Dame.

Speaking of piss poor job, No. 2 Indiana, a No. 1 seed, lost a huge lead in the fourth quarter, being outscored by Ohio State 26-12. They might still keep the No. 1 seed as their body of work is still very good.  But do they still deserve a No. 1 seed? Maybe.

A team in the hunt for a No. 1 seed now is Iowa. They beat No. 5 Maryland and were a 2 seed before all these 1 seeds loss. They would need to beat Ohio State to get that 1 seed. I'm betting on Iowa. I really like this team.

What a tough decision for this prestigious award Saturday.

No. 10 Notre Dame, No. 13 Duke and unranked Georgetown are the candidates.

Lets look at each one.

Georgetown had a tough opponent in UConn. They scored only 39 points and shot 20.3% from the field, 11.1% (3-27) on threes 58.8% from the FT line. They turned the ball over only 12 times but only had 6 assists.

Notre Dame scored only 38 points against unranked Louisville. They shot 31.4% from the field, 1-10 on threes and 50% from the FT line. They had 22 turnovers and 9 assists.

Duke scored only 37 points against No. 8 Virginia Tech. They shot 26.8% from the field, 1-15 on threes, 60% from the FT line. They turned the ball over only 9 times but only had 3 assists.

Wow...three really terrible performances. Georgetown had the worst shooting percentages. Notre Dame had the most turnovers and Duke scored the least points.

I can't decide so it's a triple UGGY day!!! Let me know who you think it should have been.
