I'm so excited!!! My good friend sTu invited me to an open practice for UConn on Saturday afternoon. I've never been to a practice and I've never been to the new facility. I can't wait!  I even convinced my wife to go. Look for my impressions in a later blog.

I added a link to my lists of blogs at the end of the Dailies. It's to A Dime Back. Great site with information and opinion on UConn sports including the Women's team. You might even see my blog linked there occasionally!!! Take a look, it's worth it.

And here is my obligatory picture of my new grandson. Getting cuter and cuter!!!

South Carolina defeated Ohio State 88-80. What a fun game to watch tonight. We got to watch some of the best players in the country.

In a losing effort, Kelsey Mitchel scored 34 points on 10-24 shooting, 4-9 from behind the arc and 12-13 from the line. She is incredibly difficult to keep in front on you, and she can shoot a step-back three from almost anywhere on the court. But she gives and she takes away. She did miss 14 shots and turned the ball over 3 times. I'm not sure if she is a point guard on this team. She has the ball in her hands a lot of the time and had only one assist. So, is the other terrific guard they have, Ameryst Alston, the point guard? She put up 19 shots, made 8 and was 4-5 from behind the arc. She ended up with 23 points. But she only had one assist as well. At least she only had one turnover. Shayla Cooper killed OSU tonight by going 2-17 from the field, 0-4 on 3's and 8 turnovers. Her 15 rebounds offset that somewhat, but she forced a lot of shots. This is clearly still a two player team and one of the most dynamic backcourts you will see. But they need much more from the other players to be better than last years team.

South Carolina just wore out OSU. They had a rebounding disadvantage at the half but turned that around in the second half and ended up with a 9 rebound advantage for the game. They are SO strong in the post with Coates and Wilson leading the way with 13 and 14 rebounds each. They also led the team in scoring with 17 and 20 points each. All of those were within 5 feet of the basket. Wilson exploded in the second half, dominating the short OSU players. The other first team AA in the game Tiffany Mitchell was brilliant at times and other times looked like she forgot how to play. She shot the ball well, but her 8 turnovers were not what SC need to see from her. I have to mention both Sessions and Imovbioh for the Gamecocks. Sessions did exactly what Staley said she wanted from her team. Push the ball and run. Sessions had 4 steals and I think each one ended up with a layup or a foul shot. She also pushed the ball after a rebound. She still can't shoot from the outside consistently but if she can push the pace, Dawn will be happy. South Carolina will need to shoot better from the foul line. They were 23 of 35. A LOT of trips to the line, but they need to convert better than 65%.

I see a lot of pain for OSU on Monday unless they can play better defense. They fouled South Carolina an amazing 29 times. It will get ugly pretty quickly if they play defense like this against UConn. But with two great players like Mitchell and Altson, OSU can stay in the game against the Huskies.

The number of the game? Three. That is how many assists OSU had as a team. THREE!

The ACC had three top twenty-five teams play Friday night. And none of them looked particularly good.

Ok, can the voters finally take North Carolina out of the top 25? They lost tonight to Gardner-Webb, 66-65. UNC was up 51-36 going in the fourth quarter before everything fell apart for Tarheels. The Bulldogs outscored UNC  30-14 in the final quarter, winning with 1.2 second left on a Candance Brown layup.

Also in the ACC, No. 14 Duke squeaked past Penn 57-50. No, not Penn State, but the Penn Quakers. The Blue Devils were down after three quarters, 41-36 before outscoring Penn 20-9 in the fourth quarter. Not a great start for Duke, but a win is a win........I guess.

And finally, Syracuse slipped past URI, 57-54. They were also down after three quarters before holding Rhode Island to 8 points in the final quarter. Syracuse should not be only winning by three against a team like URI.

The mid-major AAC member Temple, coached by former UConn coach Tonya Cardozza had a great start to their season by outrunning SEC member Florida 97-91. Congrats to the Owls and the AAC for a win over a power-5 team.

 So, without further ado!!!
