Well, that was fun. Again. It was a really nice follow up game to the outrageous shooting game that UConn had the game before against Cincinnati on Thursday.

The first quarter was just amazing. UConn was 12-19 from the field, 5-7 on threes and 5-6 from the foul line. The Huskies were not able to continue that torrid pace the rest of the entire game, although the third quarter they were 11-16 from the field.

But the defense never wavered. Houston was only able to shoot 21%, 30%, 23% and 21% in the four quarters. And they were only able to make 1-15 threes. The Huskies also forced 20 turnovers.

Megan Walker was just outstanding again. She did most of her damage in the first half, but finished with 21 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals in only 27 minutes. She hit 3-6 on threes to continue her hot streak.

Anna Makurat is showing that she is not the ordinary freshman. She has integrated her play into the starting lineup and I believe has been the second best player on the team over the last four games scoring 18, 17, 20 and now 16 points in those games. In the Houston game she added 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. She is so good in dribbling the ball to the point that when she grabs a defensive rebound, you can count on her dribbling past the defenders to set up an easy fast break basket. Geno finally convinced her to be more aggressive offensively. She now drive the lane, hits the pull up jumper and hits the three at a high rate. Can you tell I like her?

I really liked how Olivia Nelson-Ododa played in this game. She had 14 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. They only gave her 1 block, but I saw a couple more. What I liked the most was hot active she was, how she ran the court and was so efficient going 6-7 from the field. On one play she just want the court and received a beautiful pass for a fast break layup. We need this Olivia going forward.

One more player I want to mention is Kyla Irwin. She had a nice 19 minutes scoring 7 points, and handing out 4 assists.

Just a great game for UConn and now they finish the AAC regular season with a game at home against South Florida. More on that game later.

Here is the game replay. Just watch the first quarter!!!

I mentioned how great Anna has been, and along with Megan, these two have been maybe the hottest duo from deep in the entire country the last four games.

Anna has shot 3-8, 4-6, 4-5 and 4-9. That's 15-27 for 56%.

Megan has shot 2-5, 4-6, 4-6, and 3-6. That's 13-23 for 57%.

If these two can stay hot or at least get hot in the NCAA's, I like UConn's chances to get to another Final Four.

Another superb effort by the Huskies in today’s victory over Houston. UConn was just too talented at every position. Consider their made field goal totals by the starters. It was 9, 6, 6, 4 and 4. Then the bench was 3, 2, 2, and 1. Too many good scorers to cover. Next consider the assist totals by player: 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and three with 1. That makes 24 total assists. So you have everyone who can score, also passing. Can’t beat that combination.

The UConn defense continues to play so well. 18 steals and 20 total turnovers. They held Houston to 23% shooting overall & 7% from three range. Houston played 8 players and 5 of them only had 1 basket. That included 3 starters..! 39 defensive rebounds held Houston to many 1shot & done possessions. Great team effort..!

Go Huskies..!!

At the risk of repeating myself from my pregame report before the first matchup where UConn won 91-51 (my prediction was 40!!!), Houston has the trifecta when it comes to their offensive play. They can't shoot from deep, they can't shoot from the paint, and they can't make foul shots. Overall they shoot 38.8% from the field, 27.4% on threes and 60% on free throws. They also don't do a good job passing the ball. They average 12.3 assists each game and 18.5 turnovers. Their rebounding margin is a -2.3.

They are also in the red in scoring margin at 62.3 ppg for them and 66.9 ppg for their opponents.

All of these numbers are worse than what they were when UConn played Houston the first time.

Houston starts -

5'10" Senior forward  No. 3 Dorian Branch
6'2" Sophomore forward No. 30 Tatyana Hill
5'3" Sophomore guard No. 5 Dymond Gladney
5'10" Junior guard No. 23 Julia Blackshell-Fair
6' Freshman forward No. 1 Bria Patterson.

Off the bench -

6'3" Senior forward No. 22 Keasja Peace
6'2" Junior forward No. 24 Maya Jones

They are both a young team and a small team in the starting lineup. They do bring some size in off the bench.

It's difficult to see how this game could be any closer than the 91-51 game they played in Hartford. The Huskies are starting to get on a roll and I'm sure they want to keep up the momentum. UConn's defense is really shaping up and they were on fire the last game from deep. I don't expect that same shooting percentage but I do expect them to turn over Houston often leading to plenty of fast break opportunities.

UConn by 40+. It worked last time!!!

In a game that could have implications for UConn's seeding, No. 4 Stanford played at No. 13 Arizona.

This game paid for my subscription to the PAC12 network!

It was a real back and forth affair that went into overtime tied 63-63. After no scoring for the first two minutes of the OT, Arizona took a 71-64 lead on a three pointer by Sam Thomas with 1:30 left in the overtime. I thought it was over. But Stanford then scored 8 points in the next 57 seconds to take a 72-71 lead with 33 seconds left. Wow. But Arizona had the last laugh as Aarion McDonald drove for a layup with 9 seconds left. Stanford missed a shot, Arizona grabbed the rebound and the game was over.

Stanford has now lost two games this week, so it should be interesting to see where they land in the AP Top 25 poll and Charlie Cremes Bracketology. I'm guessing around 8th in the poll and a drop to a 3 seed.

That PAC12 is a fun conference. You just never know!
