UConn is taking on South Florida on Sunday in what has become the only real rivalry for UConn in the American Conference. There have been the occasional close games over the years, but really, they have been no competition for UConn.

Thursday night, in a warm up before playing the Huskies, South Florida beat Tulane 53-43 in a very ugly game. In fact, I'm feeling like I need to hand out an UGGY award for both teams in what was a really really ugly game.

USF shot only 35.8% from the field and was 4-15 on threes. Add in the 18 turnovers and you get 53 points. Sadly it was enough to win this game against a terrible performance by Tulane.

Tulane was 25.9% from the field and a pathetic 2-22 on threes. Hey, they only had 12 turnovers. But 43 points? UGGY worthy.

So congrats South Florida and Tulane. You get the UGGY award for Thursday night!

Two teams I love to hate lost Thursday night, and my heart is breaking.

Notre Dame lost a tough game to Boston College 56-55 in a game that probably set back WCBB 20 years.

The Irish shot 32% from the field and had 22 turnovers and only 12 assists. You can see how they lost this game. But can someone tell me how the Eagles won?

Boston College shot 31% from the field, was 2-22 on threes and had 27 turnovers.  Just horrible. I guess just horrible enough to win.

Boston College won the game on a shot at the buzzer after Notre Dame had taken the lead on a basket with 1.8 seconds left in the game. Irish eyes are not smiling tonight.

And in a game that should finally knock out Tennessee from the top 25, the Lady Vols lost to LSU 75-65 behind Khayla Pointer's 24 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists.  The much larger Tennessee team lost the rebounding battle to LSU 41-35. The Lady Vols looks lethargic in this game and at times confused in what they were trying to do. I watched the players when they are subbed for and to me it looks like Coach Harper is losing some of the players. They will probably win a few more game, but I'm not sure you can count on them winning any of them. After all the shade they threw UConn's way after the Huskies lost to South Carolina, this loss was very satisfying for me.

In a game that has big implications in the seeding of teams for the NCAA tournament, No. 4 NC State lost to No. 9 Louisville 66-59. I'm sure Charlie Creme was licking his chops after UConn lost to South Carolina and he could put the Huskies on the No. 2 line.

So, now what Charlie? Who is that fourth No. 1 seed?

Mississippi State? They have two ranked opponents left in the regular season in Arkansas and Kentucky, plus whoever they have to beat in the SEC tournament.

UCLA? They have to play No. 3 Oregon and No. 11 Oregon State in their next two games plus  the PAC12 Tournament.

Both of these teams will lose 1-2 more games before the seedings come out.

If UConn does what is expected and they win out, I'm liking their chances at that last No. 1 seed.

By David in Naples!!!!

Senior leadership involves playing well in big games. Crystal has been the best player for UConn in 3 of the 4 biggest games this season. In the Baylor game, she was the 2nd best player, based on scoring. Unfortunately, UConn went 1-3 in those big 4 games against Baylor, Tenn., Oregon and South Carolina. But, consider Crystal's stats:

Points scored = 77 total or 19.3 per game.
Shooting % overall = 29 for 66 or 44%
Three point shooting = 13 for 29 or 45%
Assists = 9
Turnovers = 10

Crystal played all 40 minutes in two of those games & 39+ minutes in the other two. Basically, she was on the court the whole time. Her low point total for the 4 games was 14 against Tennessee. But that led the Huskies. Her 29 pts vs S.C. and 19 against Oregon both led the team. She has been clutch when the rest of the team seemed off. That is what seniors at UConn do.

Go Huskies..!!
