Well, that was a lot of fun. After the first 5 minutes where UConn only scored 6 points, the Huskies scored 13 in the last 5 minutes of the first quarter. They continued that offensive onslaught for the rest of the entire game scoring 27, 34 and 25 points in the final three quarters.
The Huskies did a great job moving the ball around with 27 assists on 39 baskets. But it takes more than great passing to score, it takes good shooting and UConn was just amazing from the field and from deep. They were 39-69 for 56.5% from the field and an astounding 16-23 on threes for 69.3% on threes. Wow!
What they didn't do was turn Cincinnati over on defense which usually accounts for a lot of the Huskies scoring. The Beatcats had only 10 turnovers and actually took three more shots than UConn. Unfortunately for them, they made only 23 of 72 shots and 6-20 on threes.
UConn also hammered Cincinnati on the boards, out-rebounding the Bearcats 52-28. The margin just didn't seem that big because the offensive rebounds were almost equal with a 16-14 UConn advantage.
It was certainly a great team effort, as Geno said in his quick post game comments. Boy was he happy..lol. There were three players with 20+ points, quite the unusual stat for this team this season.
With some late game scoring, Christyn Williams busted out bigtime with 26 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. She was 8-14 from the field and 4-6 on threes. I loved that she was so smooth going 6-6 on free throws. Just a great confidence builder for her and hopefully she will build on that for the next two regular season games, the three AAC tournament games and the first two NCAA tournament games. That's seven more games before they might have a tough opponent in Sweet Sixteen game and the Huskies will need all hands on deck. She could be a difference maker.
Megan Walker had another terrific game with 25 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. She was 10-15 from the field and 4-6 on threes. The last 3 threes were just wonderful to see. In just a minute of play she hit three corner threes that hit nothing but net. So smooth.
The last 20 point scorer was Anna Makurat who had 20 points on 7-11 shooting and 4-5 on threes. When she is on she is ON! What I love is that she added 6 assists. She is just a terrific player who is crashing through that freshman wall and becoming that 5th option.
Crystal Dangerfield had a nice game as well. She scored 14 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and handed out 6 assists. Solid performance for the Huskies senior leader. And only one turnover against Cincinnati's pressure defense.
UConn got some nice performances from the bench. Aubrey Griffin is just a physical marvel. She grabbed a pass from Irwin under the basket and did a great job finishing under contact. She ended up with 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. AND she went 2-2 from the foul line. Love that!
Speaking of Irwin, Kyla had her usual stat filling game against an under-matched opponent. She had 8 points on 3-3 shooting and 2-2 on threes. She added 4 rebounds and 5 assists.
Olivia Nelson-Ododa didn't play much as she was clearly under the weather with her nose issue from the prior game. Hopefully we see more of her on Saturday against Houston.
I'm hoping the Huskies can build on this game and keep it rolling for several games.

SNY has reached a deal with Fox Sports to broadcast UConn women's basketball. Great news for UConn women's basketball fans.
SNY will carry up to 18 UConn games and both pre and post game shows.
“Very exciting. As UConn is moving to the Big East, we are excited to remain a part of the broadcast.” said Megan Cuomo.
I'm so happy for all the UConn fans that receive SNY in their cable package.

UConn’s victory over the Bearcats was won in the 1st half. Pretty easy to build a big lead when you go 4-4 from three, 6-6 from the charity stripe and 55% from the field. Add in a 30-15 rebound edge and hold the bad guys to 18% shooting and the fat lady can go ahead and sing.
With Olivia under the weather, the Huskies shot lights out from deep range. They finished 16-23 or 70% from outside the arc. UConn ran up 27 assists on 39 baskets while hanging 105 points on hapless Cincinnati..!! Great effort..!!
Go Huskies..!!

I'm always open for suggestions. Just please reply to this blog or email me at:
Sad thing about that SNY deal. Many fans just over the border cannot watch the games because their CATV provider does not carry the channel. Will fox also broadcast the games as well?
