I don't know if Notre Dame's No. 5 ranking in the pre-season coaches poll is accurate. Yeah, I know, I think these polls are kinda pointless, but that shouldn't stop me from using them to have something to write about!
The Irish come into this season without expected first team AA Brianna Turner. When she is there, they are no longer a perimeter based offense and she gives them a defensive presence in the post.
They also don't know at this time if Nebraska transfer, Jessica Shepard, will be available based on their exemption request to have her made eligible this season. I'm really not sure on what basis they are making that request, unless its the "we are Notre Dame so do it" basis. I don't think she will be eligible.
Kathryn Westbeld is still out with an ankle injury and isn't expected back for several more weeks.
Now, the Irish took a hit on their guard rotation with Mychal Johnson tearing her ACL in a recent practice. She was certainly not a big scorer for them, but she brought senior leadership and solid defense to the guard position.
Yes, they still have Ogunbowale, Mabrey and Jackie Young as their base and a pretty darn good one along with Lil Thompson a transfer from Stanford. I'm sure UConn fans remember her.
I'll wait to see how this version of Notre Dame plays with such a limited roster and how the lack of height effects their play. It could be a rocky road early on.

There is no doubt that Geno is one of the funniest human being on this planet. He said this about Azura Stevens -
“I hope we can get her a lot of shots,” Auriemma said. “Even without breaking a sweat she is capable of getting 25 every night easy, which would probably put her one or two short of what her man is going to get, so we are trying to fix the other part."

He just knows how to push these kids buttons. Her defense is clearly lacking at this point, so he gives her a ZINGER in the newspaper. You can bet she will read this and use it as motivation to shut him up.
Hey, at least he didn't bring back the old "couldn't guard a chair" line!

By David in Naples!!!!!
I messed up the alignment in yesterday's Numbers so here it is again. I guess I'm a little bit rusty.
Many optimistic UConn fans are predicting great results for the team this season. Some even go as far as to say the Huskies may go undefeated and win N.C. #12. That seems a bit over the top, but time will tell. In the meantime, here is how the last five UConn teams scored points for their respective seasons. (The best season is in bold. )
2016-17 Total points = 3,222 Per game average = 87.1
2015-16 Total points = 3,346 Per game average = 88.1

2014-15 Total points = 3,481 Per game average = 89.3
2013-14 Total points = 3,283 Per game average = 82.1
2012-13 Total points = 3,218 Per game average = 82.5
Obviously, teams played a different number of games each season. Last year, the team played 37 versus 2013-14 when they played 40. That impacts the total points scored, but not the average. Considering there are four returning starters off a team that averaged 87.1 points, this could be a record year for points scored, or at least per game average.
