Game Analysis
I have to give Arkansas State some credit. They are coming into this game with the right attitude.
Head coach Destinee Rogers said - “We’re excited. This is a dream come true to coach against one of the GOATs of women’s basketball, but we’re not scared. We know what we do. No one’s going to predict us to win this game, so we have an opportunity to go into Storrs and just have a ton of confidence, be free, and be proud of what we’ve accomplished this year. We’ve seen (UConn) play a similar style in Tennessee, and Tennessee (beat) them this year. So I’m sure that they’ll go back to that film to try to game plan for us, but we feel confident about what we do. So I’m really excited for the opportunity.”
Well, I'm not so sure playing like Tennessee is the way they want to go. Yes, UConn lost to the Lady Vols. Don't remind them.
The Red Wolves also own a power-conference win, having knocked off Arizona State in Tempe in November, 100-96. The team plays a pesky, high-pressure style of basketball, which has proven difficult for some opponents.
Nine of the eleven players on the roster are listed as guards, and all but one are under 6-foot-1. The Red Wolves have a balanced scoring output, with five players averaging between 7.9 and 11 points per game, led by leading scorer, 5-8 junior Zyion Shannon (11 ppg).
Their only big is 6'4" Grad student Nissa Sam-Grant. However, she only plays around 13 MPG and is averaging 2 PPG and 4 RPG. She won't be much of a factor.
I'm looking forward to see the rotation in this game. This is as small a team that UConn has played. So, does that mean UConn goes small sooner than usual? Probably not. I would expect Jana to get her 15-20 minutes. But the small team with Sarah playing the 5 will dominate ASU. You will see a ton of threes from both teams. Arkansas State is a team that really does "Jack them up". The Red Wolves only shoot them at 32%. They could make it interesting early if they hit a few. But they haven't seen a defense like the Huskies.
Prediction
Bottom line, it's a 2 vs 15 game and it will play out that way.
UConn by 45+.
