Florida State

Florida State women's basketball is unranked so far this season but they are hoping to compete for an ACC title. Last season that had a 24-9 record and made an NCAA tournament appearance.

The team had significant roster turnover, with seven new players entering the program this season through the transfer portal.

Their opening game was a 112-39 win over Florida A&M (Massey 319) and a 80-72 win over Georgia Southern (Massey 169).

Florida State  Starters
 Game Analysis

Similar to the Louisville team, Florida State has had a big turnover of players. However, Louisville had a few starters back. FSU? Not so much.

Let's look at the numbers.

The first player to talke about that left the Seminoles is 1st team All-American guard Ta'Niya Latson. In 24-25 she averaged 25.2 PPG and just dominated the FSU offense. She transferred to Dawn Staley's SC team.

They also lost 2nd leading scorer Makayla Timpson (17.5 ppg) to graduation, 3rd leading scorer O'Mariah Gordon (15.9 PPG) to graduation, and two other starters Carla Viegas (transfer to Pitt) and Maela Williams (graduation).

That's 5 players that have left that dominated the team. Thats 132 starts out of 165 possible starts. And they scored 69 PPG out of 87 or almost 80 percent of the points. They also took 72% of the shots, 61% of the three pointers and 59% of the rebounds. Wow!

So, how did FSU update their roster? Only three players are returning and they added 7 new players, 6 transfers and one freshman. Yes, they only have a ten player roster. Based on the first two games, I have an idea on who is starting and who is coming off the bench.

6' senior guard Sydney Bowles is one of two returning players that will start. She was a wing last year but is moving to the starting point guard spot. Last season she averaged 10.6 PPG and 3.2 RPG. She led the team in three point attemps and shot a solid 34.6% from deep. I would expect her to increase her scoring average and overall contribution to the team. Florida State’s success this year will be determined in large part by how well Bowles adapts to this new position. She did well against Georgia Southern with a team leading 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

The other returning player that will start is Amaya Bonner, a 6' senior guard. She only averaged 3.4 PPG and 2.3 RPG last season. She shot only 38% from the field and 25% on threes. She has the length to disrupt passing lanes and the athleticism to be very effective in the open court. Her familiarity of the system is a big plus for her getting playing times with so many new players. She had 6 points in 17 minutes against Georgia Southern.

FSU has three new additions that will start.

Jasmine Shavers, a 5'8" senior guard will start at the shooting guard position. She is a transfer from Texas Tech who averaged 15.4 PPG for the Red Raiders as a sophomore and 14.9 PPG as a junior where she shot 36% from the field and 33% on threes. Coach Wickoff has nice things to say about her. "Jasmine is a competitor and brings a physicality and work ethic to the court that our fans will truly enjoy watching". She had only 1 points and went 0-6 against Georgia Southern.

The big in the FSU lineup is 6'6" junior center Pania Davis. A transfer from New Mexico Junior College, she is a presense in the middle for the Seminole. They are expecting her to protect the paint and do some solid rebounding and block some shots. It's a big jump from junior college but this young lady has some skiils. She really struggled in her last outing against Georgia Southern with 4 fouls in only 11 minutes although she did have 8 points.

The last starter is 6'2" forward Allie Kubek. A transfer from Maryland, She scored in double figures in 15 games...Averaged 15.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 80% (4-5) from three point range in Terps' NCAA Tournament run. Last year she started 21 of 33 games for the Terps and averaged 9.1 PPG and 4.2 RPG. She shot a solid 56% from the field and had 20 blocks. She will be a good addition to the starting lineup. Kubek had 12 points and 7 rebounds in her 25 minutes against Georgia Southern.

Off the bench there is one returning player, Avery Treadwell, a 6'3" junior forward, averaged 2.8 points and 2.2 rebounds in limited minutes last year. She had a nice game against Georgia Southern with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks in 13 minutes.

5'8" Mari Gerton, is a talented four-star recruit. Gerton is the only true freshman on the roster and the only true point guard on the roster. She will backup Bowles at the point. However she only played 1 minutes against Georgia Southern. Clearly she needs more seasoning.

Emma Risch, a 6'1" junior guard, Is a transfer from Notre Dame. She was a five-star high school recruit who never really found her footing with the Irish due to injuries. Risch is a three-point sniper who shot 41.9% from deep last year for the Irish. However, she only had 43 three-point attempts. She might be taking more this season. She had 7 points and 3 rebounds in 24 minutes against Georgia Southern.

Sole Williams is a 5'9" junior guard who averaged 7.3 points and 2.3 rebounds for Texas A&M last year. She is an experienced player who was a solid starter for the Aggies. Williams took a lot of threes last year but only shot 29.8% from behind the arc. She had a really nice game against Georgia Southern with 15 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in 21 minutes.

Tatum Greene is a 6'3" transfer from Boston College. Greene has a high ceiling. She has excellent length at 6’3 and has the potential to be a force defensively. As a freshman for the Eagles, she led them with 22 blocks.  Greene finished her first season averaging 4.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, .6 blocks, .5 assists, shot 41 percent from the floor and 48.5 percent from 3-point land. She had a team leading 31 minutes and had 8 points and 8 rebounds, 5 of them offensive.

So, what can we expect from the new FSU Seminoles? From everything I've read, expect them to play just like they have in the past.

Even though FSU is experiencing so much turnover this year the coaching staff is committed to remaining an uptempo team. It's just who they are.

However, as I said, they are losing 69 PPG out of 87 or almost 80 percent of the points,  72% of the shots taken, 61% of the three pointers taken and 59% of the rebounds. Those are just numbers. Losing the Big 3 of Ta’Niya Latson, Makayla Timpson and O’Mariah Gordon has a much bigger impact than just numbers. Florida State has done apretty good job replacing all of the talent that was lost but trying to replace the Big 3 is nearly an impossible task.

They love to run, push the ball and just play at a fast past. While that could be effective against most teams, it's a problem against this Husky team. The Husky defense will slow them down and UConn will run on the running team and do it way more effectively.

UConn will press and force turnovers and with all the new players and only two games (against weak opponents) under their belts I expect a lot of Seminole turnovers.

We all know how UConn will play. Press, run, find the open three point shooter and just defend the heck out of the ball.

Final Prediction

This game could get really ugly. It's UConn's first home game and I'm sure the rims will be more forgiving at Gampel. With so many new players for FSU, I just can't see them getting it together in time to put up a battle against the Huskies. Look for a big game from Serah Williams, who will show the tall center for FSU what Div I basketball is all about.

In their last game Florida State really struggled with Georgia Southern. Yes, Georgia Southern. They only won 80-72 and were only up 2 points going into the fourth quarter. That doesn't bode well for FSU against the Huskies. I originally had a 25 point win for the Huskies. After seeing the last game for Florida State, I'm uping that by 10 points.
