TO ME!!!!

Yes! It's DoggyDaddy's birthday. 71 years young on 12/30. I was called my father's little tax deductions for many years.

It's been another great year. Enjoying my life! My wonderful wife, my incredibule son and daughter and their familys and so many great friends made the last 12 months soooo wonderful.

So, on to the rest of what I hope will be a terrific 2024 for the UConn Huskies. And maybe some big wins!!

UConn players reveal what make Geno a special coach

**********************************************************

I'm so excited for this. I was doubtful the other day but now I'm convinced. UConn Husky fans are really excited about this team. Gotta love the home court advantage. 16,000+ at the XL? Amazing.

That kind of attendence was usually reserved to when Tennessee came to town! And more lately great crowds for the South Carolina games.  But a sell out for a regular season Big East game? Wow!!

I hate injuries. I hate non-contact ACL injuies the most. It happened to Fudd and now it happened to Texas's Rori Harman, one of the best guards in the country. She was key to Texas beating UConn this year and key to Texas having a long run in the NCAA.

A big brouhaha about No. 1 2024 recruit and UConn target Sarah Strong. I believe I mentioned the other day that Jamelle Elliot was at her game the other day. Love that the Huskies are still on her trail. Then it was mentioned that South Carolina had their head coach and a couple of other coaches at the game.

So, all of a sudden now UConn fans are worried that Dawn Staley is going to get Strong. Fans are so parinoid.  Yes, I know the Aliyah Boston recruiting loss was painfull. It happens. But it doesn't mean UConn will lose every recruit to South Carolina.

In this case there are good reasons why there is no reason to worry about South Carolina.

1.  The South Caroina coaching staff were more than likely there to watch Edwards, the No. 2 player in that class that has already comitted to South Carolina.

2. Why travel to see a player you already have signed? Well, that game was only 15 minutes from the South Carolina Campus. It's called showing support!

3. According to my sources, Strong has never visited the South Carolina campus.

As my friend Cat said, players that pick UConn usually don't wait to committ. She feels like UNC is the likely destination. I agree. Home state wins. I really hope we are both wrong.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not a UConn pickup but I'm sure of interest to WCBB fans. Nice get for Ohio State. Cambridge is a terrific player!

Straight from the Dog

In the latest UConn WBB Weekly article, they talk about the UConn/Marquette match up. She said at the end of the article that in order to win Uconn has to take advantage of their size advantage. And I totally agree, although the rest of her write up is not as good as my Pregame Report. But I digress...lol.

She said "There aren’t tons of opponents where Aaliyah Edwards and Ice Brady will have a size advantage in the post. Marquette is one of them"

Well......not exactly true. UConn is at a disadvantage against South Carolina. And maybe Notre Dame. But the rest of the games? Against the Big East?

Crieghton - They have two 6'1" starters. No one taller on the roster.
Georgetown - 6'3" and a 6'4". They are the same size at Ice and Edwards but neither can guard Edwards.
St. John's - Two 6'2".
Seton Hall - 6'3" and 6'2".
DePaul - 6'3" and 6'1"
Villanova - 6'4" and 6'2"
Xavier - 6'4" and 6'2".

Those are the only teams they play in the Big East. UConn is taller than all of them except Georgetown so there are plenty of opponents this season that UConn has more size than.

GAMES OF INTEREST

Some really interesting games on Saturday. I hope to catch some of the action.

In a Big Ten match up, No. 17 Ohio State visits Michigan. This is always a good game and could have been a good upset pick of the day. However, I expect Ohio State to pull away. Michigan is just not that good this year.

New into the Top 25 and still undefeated, No. 25 West Virginia takes on Kansas at the Jayhawks court. I like this for an upset. I'm not that impressed with the Mountineers.

No. 10 Baylor takes a ride a couple of hours south to Austin to take on the University of Texas. The Longhorns have to be reeling after finding out that their star Rori Harmon is out for the season. As UConn fans know, it's really hard to play well after an event like that. Especially when it's your leader on and off the court. Both teams are undefeated so one will finally lose. I'm guessing Texas.

No. 12 Utah is taking on No. 8 Colorado in a PAC-12 opener for both teams. I'm still not sold on Colorado. They are still living off that opening season win over LSU. Utah is a really tough team. I'm betting on them.

In a Big East game, No. 20 Creighton, UConn's opponent in the game after Marquette, is taking on St. John's in New York. Creighton should win.

Another undefeated team puts their streak on the line when No. 23 TCU takes on a decent BYU team. Not decent enough. Look for the streak to continue.

In what could be the game of the day, No. 6 USC visits Pauley Pavilion to try to take down No. 4 UCLA. Superstar freshman Juju Watkins missed the Trojans last game with an illness. Hopefully she is back and 100% after the school break. Both California teams are undefeated and have played really well this season. UConn knows all about the Bruins. I think they are the better team. And USC hasn't been tested since the first game of the season in their win over Ohio State. UCLA with a double digit win.

Plus one for every assist block point rebound and steal. I don’t add extra for offensive rebounds as it already seems to favor the bigs. Minus one for every missed shot (2, 3 or foul), turnover or foul committed.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. I know it wasn't a white one. No snow anywhere!!!

I had the usual Jewish Christmas. Chinese food!! And some football games to watch.

I'm finding this hard to believe. They had a season high last year of 14,375 against Villanova. Over 15,000 for this game? While awesome, I will believe it when I see it.

**************************************************

Would this be the greatest starting lineup of all time? All in their prime I can't imagine another starting 5 that would be them. Even players from other teams.

Morgan Cheli is going to get solid minutes next season for the Huskies. She can play positions 1-4. I can't wait to see her in a UConn uniform. She is planning on wearing No. 23. Big legacy to live up to!!

Straight from the Dog

Phil pointed this out. SECreme has UConn as a 5 seed. Ridiculous. They have only lost to Top 5 teams. And they are also showing they are figuring it out. Here are other ranking services compared to SECreme.

  • Massey 8
  • NET 12
  • Her Hoop stats 5
  • AP 15
  • RPI 1
  • ESPN Power 9
  • Creme 17, 18, 19 or 20

The AP voters are idiots too. They punished UConn too much for their losses and not enough for their wins. It will all shake out later but still, it's annoying.

I thought it might be interesting to look at how ratings compare among five rating services:

AP rankings

NET

Massey

Coaches poll

Her Hoops Stats

I originally planned to look at the top 25, but it turned out to be a little more than I could manage so I decided to analyze whoever is in the top 10 in each of the five rating services, and wherever they fall in the other rating services.

One way of looking at this information is in the table as follows:

I tried to be clever and use the school colors to distinguish the teams. That may or may not work for you.

A second way of looking at the same information is to list the teams and then show the ranking for each of the five services.

Below the second table I put in the correlations; I’m a bit rusty so I’m not sure I created a standard correlation table but I think you can figure out what the numbers mean.

The first take away is unsurprising — the two human polls, AP & Coaches, are highly correlated with a 96% correlation coefficient. Not surprising as I’m sure the coaches look at what AP selects and vice versa and doesn’t depart too far in most cases. I expected them to be highly correlated although 96% is a little higher than I might’ve guessed.

A somewhat more surprising take away is that the human polls and the algorithm polls are not very highly correlated. For example, NET is only 32% correlated with the AP Poll. That’s not a huge correlation for two things that purport to measure the same thing. I’m fairly certain that alcohol sales and teacher salaries have a higher correlation.

I haven’t spent a lot of time looking at Her Hoop Stats, perhaps I should. The something to like about a rating service that thinks UConn is number five.

They are very uncorrelated with the AP poll, under 8%.

I also calculated the standard deviation of the ratings, the minimum and maximum ratings for each team and the range (the difference between highest and lowest). No one will be surprised that allating services have South Carolina first which means the standard deviation is zero and the minimum possible range.

I originally put this together a day or so ago, when Indiana was ranked 26 in the NET rankings. One day later after a decent win they moved all the way up to 17. I’m still surprised at the road to the jump, which is a cautionary tale that the NET rankings are still a bit suspect.

Kansas State and Colorado are now the major anomalies, with Colorado ranked as high as eight and as low as 24, in Kansas State ranked as low as eight and as high as 27.
