DoggyDaddy's Dailies 3/1/16

******************************************************************************

I'm sure everyone reading this watched the game on ESPN2 tonight. If not SHAME ON YOU!!!!.

If you didn't see it, all you have to know is two words. Breanna Stewart. After another slow start that ended with a 25-24 South Florida lead at the half, the best player in WCBB took over. She had 16 points in the third quarter to lead UConn to a 32-14 advantage for the 10 minutes and a 17 point lead going into the fourth quarter 56-39. It was an amazing effort by the all-American, that included jumpers, offensive rebounds and put backs and blocks. She just dominated the quarter. She ended up with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks. Fantastic!!

Kia Nurse was 4-7 on threes and hit a few critical shots in the first half to keep UConn close. She ended up with 15 points and the silence from her critics was deafening.

Tuck had a nice game too, feeding Stewart at the right time in putting together her 5 assists.

Geno didn't go deep into the bench, an indication of what he will do in the final two games of the NCAA tournament. Only Williams and Collier saw any minutes and Collier was terrific off the boards with 8 rebounds in 13 minutes, three of them offensive.

For South Florida, it was more of the same, with Courtney Williams dominating the offense. She scored 21 points but it took her 22 shots to do it. They really missed Laska, there freshman sharp shooter, who missed her third consecutive game with an ankle injury. UConn did a great job keeping USF's jumping jack forward Alisa Jenkins off the boards, holding her to 8 points and only 6 rebounds, half her season average. South Florida only used one player off the bench and she played only 5 minutes. They had three starters with 40 minutes, one with 38 and one with 37.

UConn dominated the boards, winning that battle 45-29 and held USF to 36% shooting and 29% on threes.

Oh, I predicted a 20 points win. Final? 79-59.

*****************************************************************************

In the only other top 25 game, No. 4 Baylor looked fantastic in beating up Texas at home Monday night to take the regular season Big 12 title. They won their 30th game of the season to go 30-1. Baylor hammered the Longhorns 16-7 in the second quarter and then put the game away with a 30 point third quarter to take a 60-30 lead after three. The Bears coasted in to win the game 74-48.

I think Baylor is right there after UConn along with Notre Dame. All three have several scoring options and that is what will the difference. You have to be able to score when you are playing UConn. The Bears has a terrific set of guards in Johnson, Jones and Wallace. Johnson had 10 points and 12 assists, Jones had 9 points and 7 rebounds and Wallace was terrific with 23 points going 3-5 on threes. They have an excellent pair of forwards in Prince (more of a wing) and All-American Davis, who had 16 points and 7 rebounds. Their strength and weakness are their two bigs, Freshman Mompremier and Brown. Both were solid in this game. Mompremier had 9 points and 10 rebounds, and Brown had 5 points and 3 rebounds. They add up to a very good center that gives you 10 fouls. Young but talented.

Yeah, Baylor worries me. They also have an excellent coach in Kim Mulkey. Love her or hate her, I think she is one of the best coaches in WCBB. I hope they match up with Notre Dame. I would prefer UConn not play both of them.

From David in Naples

1. Katie Lou Samuelson, who earlier in her freshman season had a bit of a slow start, is now on fire from 3 point range.  Last 9 games, 25-51 or 49.0%.
2. Gabby Williams has greatly improved her free throw shooting. She is now 35-46 or 76.1%.
3. Napheesa Collier has been a monster on the offensive boards, leading the team with 68 rebounds.
4. Breanna Stewart leads the team in scoring, as expected, but is also 2nd with 112 assists. Her high was last year at 122.
5. As a team, the Huskies are making 80% of their free throws, 338-423.
6. Kia Nurse has started all 28 of UConn's games this season.
7. UConn defense is giving up fewer points per game (47.7) than in either of the last two seasons.
8. Despite graduating shot blocker Kiah Stokes, UConn leads the nation with 6.64 blocks per game.

Go Huskies..!!

While the win over Georgia has the Lady Vol fans dreaming of winning the SEC tournament and going far in the NCAA tournament, Tennessee is now officially gone from the AP poll. Last week, they were holding on to the bottom spot of the "others" as they had 2 points. This week? Nothing. Zero. Zip. Nana. Not a vote. Not a sniff of a vote. It's like they don't exist!!!

So, now, they look to be playing Arkansas in the SEC tournament and if the Razorbacks are as stupid as Georgia and play man-to-man against a team that can't shoot straight, Tennessee has a good chance of winning. Lets see what happens.

Say goodbye to Missouri from the top 25. The No. 24 Tigers lost Sunday to Vanderbilt 56-52 after losing to Kentucky the previous game.

No. 9 Arizona State lost to No 14 UCLA 74-61 and in the third upset of the day, No. 15 Kentucky upset No. 11 Texas A&M 71-58.

There really is a lot more parity in WCBB. Upsets almost every day. UConn will be joining the pack next year. I hope Husky fans are ready!!!

From David in Naples

UConn overcame Senior Day jitters to beat Tulane 80-40 yesterday. But, their 1st quarter total of 8 points was their lowest of the season. Here are the Huskies worst six quarters, followed by the points they scored in the very next quarter.

1. Tulane, 8 points, followed by 28 pts.
2. Houston, 14 points, followed by 17 pts.
3. Memphis 15 points, followed by 22 pts.
4. Maryland, 15 points, followed by 20 pts.
5. Florida State, 15 points, followed by 18 pts.
6. USF, 16 points, followed by 20 pts.

Opponents worst six quarters are:
1. Tulsa 3 points.
2. Chattanooga 3 points.
3. Tulane 4 points.
4. Cincinnati 4 points.
5. SMU 5 points.
6. Houston 5 points.

The Huskies defense has held opponents to single digit scoring 36 times in 28 games. ;)

Well, finally, an upturn for the Lady Vols. They beat an unranked but up and coming Georgia team 80-60. It was a solid offensive performance for the Lady Vols. They had 4 good scoring quarters and shot a respectable 46% from the field. They had 21 assists and only had 12 turnovers, a nice improvement over their season average. The only negative stat was that they shot only 27% on threes.

Deshields started and played 30 minutes, shooting 9-18 from the field, 3-6 on threes and scored 22 points and added 7 rebounds. Only two turnovers made it one of Diamonds best performances at Tennessee. T'ea Cooper had a terrific game as well going 10-14 from the field for 21 points.

They won this game on their defensive performance and Georgia's offensive ineptitude in the first quarter. Tennessee outscored the Bulldogs 22-4 in the first quarter and the lead was never smaller than 13 points.

Congrats to the Lady Vols. On a one game winning streak!

On edit, my friend Linkster had this great viewpoint to add -

"Georgia was up and coming. Just a week ago they lost Barbee, probably their best player, who was their second best scorer and more importantly their leading rebounder, (from the guard position) to a broken leg. Tenn won the game because they had 20 offensive rebounds, just 4 fewer than the defensive rebounds of the Bulldogs.

The one thing that this game showed me was that when motivated by senior day, the team came together and won with Holly's game plan. They also were only whistled for 8 fouls and had but 12 turnovers. On the other hand they shot 6-22 (27%) from 3 and a miserable 4-13 from the freethrow line.

The pollyanna's over on VN are already talking about winning the SECT.  Myself, I think they can beat Arkansas but I seriously doubt they can get much further. They are playing in Jacksonville and they are 4-8 away from TBA."

Team Overviews

UConn at South Florida Game 1 Highlights

The first time these two teams met, it was in Tampa and UConn won 75-59. It was another game that was a slow start for UConn. They took quite a few open threes as South Florida packed the paint to negate the inside advantage the Huskies held especially with USF's star front court player Alisa Jenkins out with an ankle injury. UConn really struggled early from the outside, missing their first 5 three pointers. And while that was going on, the Bulls took advantage of their open looks, especially their star Courtney Williams and the freshman from Latvia, Kitija Laska. South Florida was 4-5 on threes while UConn was 0-4 and the Bulls had a 14-6 lead. UConn put this one away early in the fourth quarter.  Jefferson, Tuck and Samuelson hit consecutive threes and the UConn lead was 18. After Nurse hit a pair of free throws and a nice jumper, the lead was expanded to 21 with around four minutes left in the game. South Florida went on a quick 9-0 run of their own with 3 three pointers, two by Courtney Williams. But that was as close as the Bulls would get. UConn pushed the lead to 18 before Courtney Williams hit her final basket for the final score, 75-59.

South Florida is coming off a nice win against Temple Saturday and are 9-2 their last 11 games. They will have Jenkins back for this one. Jenkins is the leading rebounder in the AAC and second leading scorer for the Bulls. She is also the emotional leader of the team and should have an impact in this game.

UConn is coming off a senior day victory over Tulane 80-40 after their worst quarter of the season to start the game. They will have to put that behind them as USF would take advantage of that kind of slow start. Stewart comes into this game playing even better since the Team USA tryouts. Playing against and with the greatest players in the world seems to have brought her confidence to another level. Speaking of another level, Samuelson has certainly gone there! Over her last three games, she has scored 19, 21 and 21 points. She has shot 20-30 from the field and 15-25 on threes.

UConn Starters

30 Breanna Stewart
6'4" Senior Forward

In the first matchup, Stewie hit a couple of huge threes in the first half, but she was clearly grabbed, held, pushed and harassed every possession. The refs just don't see enough of the off the ball fouls, in my opinion. In spite of that, I thought that Stewart had a solid game and her 12 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 blocks were key in the victory.

3 Morgan Tuck
6'2" RS Junior Forward

In the first matchup, Morgan did it offensively in every way you can think of. She was 3-6 on threes. She handed out four assists. She scored 22 points. She drove to the basket, posted up. This was before her knee started acting up.

4 Moriah Jefferson
5'7" Senior Guard

Jefferson played a tough 39 minutes in the first matchup. I'm pretty sure her focus on defense and ball distribution impacted her shooting some, as she went only 3-10 from the field and only 2-3 on threes. But she had six assists and only two turnovers and she played excellent defense as always.

11 Kia Nurse
6' Sophomore Guard

I remember watching the first matchup where she missed her first three and said, oh no, here we go again. But she sure turned that around for the rest of the game. In her 33 minutes she scored 16 points and went 4-8 on threes. Her hustle was as good as ever.

6'3" Freshman Guard/Forward

Playing off the bench in the first matchup, Katie hit a couple of big threes in the fourth quarter and overall played a nice game. She managed to snag four tough rebounds and played some nice defense. She played 22 minutes in scoring 8 points. She'll be starting in this game.

Collier started but only played 14 minutes in the first matchup but she managed to tear down 6 rebounds. She looked lost out there on defense, something you don't see very often. But an overall solid performance.

 Game Analysis

Courtney Williams is still leading South Florida. The all-everything, all-AAC guard and one of the best in the country leads the team in scoring and steals, 2nd in rebounds. She has taken twice as many shots than any other player on the team. She put up 26, 25 and 22 shots last year against UConn. She put up another 25 in the first matchup.

In the first matchup, Alisia Jenkins was out with an injury. South Florida will welcome her back to hit the boards and hit them hard as she averages over 12 rebounds a game. But South Florida might have another important player out in this game. The Bull's new weapon, Kitija Laska, their 6' freshman forward from Latvia has missed her last two games with an ankle sprain. I have not heard if she will be available for Monday night's game. She had little mini-slump before getting injured but clearly she has the ability to make a lot of threes and changes how UConn has to defend USF.

South Florida handles the ball better than they did last year where they had 90 more TO's than assists. But UConn will still pressure them as much as possible, in the full court and half court.

What USF brings is a tough and tenacious man-to-man pressure defense. They have done a great job shutting down the opposing offenses and did a nice job holding UConn to 13 points under their scoring average.

As I said UConn will put a lot of pressure on the USF offense and they held them to 59 points in the first game. UConn's defense has only allowed 34, 41, 41, and 40 the last four games. I expect UConn to stifle USF as much as they did the first time they met back in early January.

Offensively, UConn dominated the paint in the first matchup. Stewart and Tuck took turns posting up but with Jenkins playing in this game USF will do better in that regard.  But UConn has Katie Lou really turning it on and that is a big difference in this game shooting the three.

Final Prediction

As I always say, it's about match ups. And even with  Jenkins, USF just can't match up with UConn. I said before the first meeting that couldn't see USF scoring more than 60 points and that proved to be accurate. If Laska is out, it will be even tougher offensively for the Bulls. I thought that UConn and Jefferson would slow down Williams, but she is almost unstoppable. She will get her shots and hit plenty of them.

What USF has going for it is the confidence of playing UConn tough most times they play. They feel they can beat UConn especially with Jenkins back and if Laska plays. But it's just not to be. UConn's defense will again hold South Florida to under 60 and I believe UConn will crack 80 in this game.

UConn by 20+.
