LATE BREAKING NEWS!!!! Olivia Nelson-Ododa to UCONN!!!!!!

More in tonight's blog

In case you missed it here is my UConn/Stanford post game report.

Tomorrow is a big day for the future of UConn women's basketball. Olivia Nelson-Ododa will announce her decision on where she will attend college in 2018. The 6'4" post is just a wonderful player coming off a knee injury that kept her out all of last year.

I think UConn has a great chance here. Keep your fingers crossed!!

I went to the UConn men's game against Stony Brook Tuesday night and for much of the game I sat there wondering if I can handle a team that plays this poorly. Players just stand around on offense and struggle to guard the perimeter on defense.

It was an ugly game for the Huskies, and they were down 9 after a three pointer by Stony Brook pushed the lead to 62-53 with 5:37 remaining. Then Jalen Adams went on a 9-0 by himself to tie up the game and UConn finished the game on a 17-2 run to win 72-64.

It ended up an exciting and fun game!!

No. 6 Notre Dame defeated a game Western Kentucky team 78-65. Jessica Shepard had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Good for her and Notre Dame that she was able to get that waiver that allowed her to play this season after transferring from Nebraska. But boo to the NCAA for granting that waiver.

I would love to hear the logic behind her getting this waiver. It just doesn't make sense based on the rules and past situations that they didn't grant the waiver.

I just don't get it. Maybe a little Irish favor???

By David in Naples!!!!!

In Sunday's opening season victory, UConn held Stanford to 4 points in the 2nd period. Ten minutes, four points. Stanford has 1 field goal and 2 free throws. They went the final 8:26 of the period without a field goal. Quite the defensive performance. Despite the lack of scoring, that was only the 2nd worst point total by an opponent in the last two years.

SMU was held to 2 points in the 1st period last season. Other teams also were held to single digits against the Huskies. Chattanooga only scored 5 points in their game versus the Huskies a year ago. Mighty Texas was held to 5 points in the final period in December. DePaul only had 6 points to open their game against UConn. The Huskies scored 37 in that same period. UCF had a New Year's surprise, only getting 6 points to open their game. So, low scoring periods are nothing new for the Huskies.

However, holding Stanford to 14 total points in the whole first half is significant. Only Chattanooga, who scored 12 points in that half, had fewer points than Stanford. UCF comes in 3rd with 16 points in a half, followed by five teams that only scored 18 in twenty minutes in a particular half. They are USF, SMU, Tulane, Houston, and Temple.

Go Huskies..!!

And a two-fer!!!!

understand it is difficult to enjoy a half of basketball when UConn gets outscored 39-29. It doesn't help when the play of the Huskies, in the two halves, was so different. Still, while much of the Stanford game was odd & weird statistically, there was much to lift the spirits of even the most pessimistic Husky fan.

Consider the odd & weird first:
1. The backcourt of Nurse and Dangerfield had 13 points in the 1st period. Crystal had them all.
2. Katie Lou did not even try a three point shot until mid 2nd period with UConn up by 16.
3. Kia had 40 points in two pre-season games and only 4 against Stanford.
4. Stanford went 5-31 or 16% shooting in the 1st half. They had 4 points total in the 2nd quarter.
5. For the game, UConn made 11 free throws and missed 7. That is 61% for the team.
6. The UConn bench played 59 combined minutes, but only scored 10 pts. Z had 8, Walker 2.
7. The Huskies missed 8 of their last 9 shots in the last 4:41 of the game, including all 5 three point attempts.

Enough with the wierd stats. What went right. And, I mean really, really right..!;)
1. Crystal exploded for 24 points on 6-7 three point shooting. Sweet..!! :D
2. UConn had only 7 turnovers in the game, but created 22 from Stanford.
3. Gabby filled the stat sheet again w/ 11 pts, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. Her penetration on lay-ups looked unstoppable.
4. UConn was up by 35 points at the half & only gave up 14 points to #10 Stanford.
5. Defense blocked 6 shots and stole the ball 13 times. Stanford shot 32% for the game.
6. Katie Lou blocked a shot..!! :p
7. On a night when Kia made 0 threes, Napheesa had only 3 rebounds, Gabby had 0 offensive rebounds and the bench went 0-8 on threes, the Huskies won easily, leading by 30 with 2 minutes to play.

One game into the season, a new streak is born. One in a row. A good start, but plenty to work on.

Go Huskies..!!
