 Overview

This is a really bad time for East Carolina to be playing UConn, even at home. They came into the first UConn game with a 9-5 record and in the 6 games since that game on January 4th, ECU has gone 1-4. They won the first game after the UConn game against SMU in a nail-biter 58-57. Then they lost the next four games. Unfortunately for East Carolina, three of those games were against the three teams right behind UConn in the standings. They lost 78-47 to Temple, 79-48 to South Florida, 54-42 to a weak UCF team and 74-64 to Cincinnati.

UConn has improved game after game. In their four games since beating East Carolina, UConn went 4-0 with an average victory of 97-49. Just short of doubling their opponents. In their first game this year against East Carolina, UConn won 90-45.  Here are the highlights from that game.

Heather Macy headshot 2016
Coach Heather Macy

After being named head coach of the East Carolina women's basketball team on April 30, 2010, Heather Macy enters her seventh season at the helm of the program.

Macy owns a career record of 222-122, including a 107-73 overall mark during her tenure at ECU. She is the only coach in program history to lead the Pirates to 20 or more wins in three-straight seasons after posting consecutive 22-win campaigns from 2012-15 which were complemented by as many Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) appearances.

In 2015-16, milestones were a common theme, as Macy earned victory No. 100 at ECU on Nov. 27 in an 80-62 triumph over Eastern Washington. ECU’s quartet of commitments during the Early Signing Period comprised the No. 49 overall class in the nation, marking the program’s first top-50 crop in program history. Jada Payne also became the first Pirate to receive an invitation to a WNBA preseason camp with the Washington Mystics.

Payne finished her four-year career with 2,029 points, which includes 1,757 during three seasons with the Pirates – a total that ranks No. 3 on the program’s all-time scoring list. Payne’s accomplishments were aplenty during her final campaign as her 625 points stand as the second-most in a season in program history. She also earned All-American Athletic Conference First Team honors to become just the second player in program history to earn first-team recognition in three-straight years. For the second time in as many years, I’Tiana Taylor received a second-team nod, while becoming just the fourth player to average a double-double with 14.1 points and 10 rebounds per game. Her 321 total rebounds stand No. 2 in the school’s record book for a single season.

 Game Analysis

In my Pre Game Report before the first match up I admitted that I didn't know much about this East Carolina team. So many changes on the roster from last year. Now that I have seen them play against UConn, I can do a little analysis. Very little.

I can tell you that Coach Macy will play her entire roster and at times make hockey like substitutions, a full five player line change. I actually can see UConn doing that on occasion next season.

The best player on the team was clearly the Vanderbilt transfer and fifth year player Kristen Gaffney. She certainly wasn't intimidated by UConn. Bree McDonald, the second leading scorer on the team was totally shut down by the Huskies. Freshman Raven Johnson played 28 minutes against UConn. Her coach has a lot of confidence in her.

I have to admit, even after watching them play UConn, I have no clue about how East Carolina will approach this game. They were totally disrupted on offense by the Husky press and pressure defense. 24 turnovers. The only reason that UConn only scored 90 points was their unusually high numbers of turnovers.

Look for the Huskies to pressure the Pirates early and often. Will ECU be as intimidated as they were in the first game? I can't see this being any easier for them.

Final Prediction

When I updated the team stats from the last time ECU and UConn met, it was clear which direction the teams were going. EVERY stat for UConn improved since the last outing. EVERY stat for East Carolina was worse.

I'll go with that trend. UConn won the first game between these two teams 90-45. I'll add five to UConn and take away 5 from ECU. UConn by 55+.
