My granddaughter Noa's cheer team won at the Dayton Beach International Classic for their group. What a great year for my 9 year old. She is the second from the right on the floor.

Statistically, Katie Lou Samuelson and Napheesa Collier almost had a better freshman year than Breanna Stewart and Moriah Jefferson. Obviously, neither KLS nor Collier had the dominating performance in the Final Four that Stewie had. They didn't need to. Stewie handled that, for the 4th time in a row. Consider the following:

1. Games and starts - Stewie played in 36 games freshman year and started 14. MoJeff played in all 39, but started only 2. KLS and Napheesa together missed only 1 game (KLS in the Final) and started 31 combined games. Advantage KLS/Collier.

2. Points and rebounds - Stewie and Mo scored 679 points their first year. They also grabbed a combined 293 rebounds. This year's two freshman piled up 666 points and 321 rebounds. Katie Lou getting hurt in the Final Four and missing most of two games, kept them from passing on the point total. Tie.

3. Assists - Moriah plus Stewie dished out 104 assists as freshman. In comparison, Collier and Samuelson had 116 assists. Advantage KLS/Collier.

4. Three point shooting - Jefferson and Stewart made 45-148 three point shots, or 30.4%. Led by Katie Lou, the two fabulous frosh made 80-211 from beyond the arc. That's 37.9%. Advantage KLS/Collier.

5. Free throw shooting - Napheesa shot an amazing 91.7% from the charity stripe (44-48). Katie Lou was almost as good at 83.7% (36-43). Together they hit 88%. Mo and Stew finished freshman year at 106-137 or 77.3%. Advantage KLS/Collier.

6. Blocked shots, steals & turnovers - Stewie had 74 blocks her first year and Mo added 2. Napheesa had 47 to go with Katie's 6. Advantage Stewie. In the turnover department, Mo & Stew had 103. Collier and her buddy had only 84. Advantage KLS/ Collier. Freshman year, Mo had 52 steals, while Stewie added 41. Napheesa almost matched Mo with her 50 steals and Katie Lou added 38. Advantage Stewie and Mo.

7. Team record - Stewie and Mo played with Farris, Dolson, KML and Bria Hartley. (Tuck was hurt.) The team went 35-4 and won the National Championship. Collier and Samuelson played with Stewie, MoJeff, Morgan and Nurse, went undefeated & won the national Championship. Tie.

The best way to view this analysis is to stop trying to measure who had a better freshman year and realize Katie Lou and Napheesa are really good and going to get better. Maybe even as good as Breanna and Moriah. And those two ended up working out pretty well.
