Here is a picture of my Brother-in-Law and my Nephew with one of the heroes of my youth and for the last 56 years.
Mohammed Ali was Cassius Clay when at the age of eight I watched him win Olympic gold in the 1960 Rome Olympics. I followed his pro career and learned so much about personal decisions, strong convictions and self sacrifice as he became came a conscientious objector to the Viet Nam war, something I felt strongly about at the age of 15. The sacrifice of his title, his career and possible freedom was stunning to me as a young boy. I was thrilled when the Supreme Court overturned his conviction and amazed when he eventually regained his title.
His struggles with Parkinson disease was sad and inspiring. He didn't want anyone to feel sorry for him, and he never hid from the public. I will admit to crying like a baby when he surprised the world and lit the Olympic flame at the 1996 Atlanta games.
And today I am sad and happy. I know that he is back to himself, talking to god and even taking him on for a few rounds. Floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee.
