UCONN 78 - Duke 50

Another game another terrific performance by this version of the UConn Huskies. And as seems to be the case with this team, the offensive production is spread out between several players.

Tonight, the scoring leader was someone who will go down as the best one year player in UConn history, Lou Lopez-Senechal. She was on fire from outside going 4-5 and she added a traditional three point play. She ended up with 23 point and 6 rebounds. I love her game and that high arcing three pointer. She is getting more and more confident and gives UConn an amazing 1-2 scoring punch with Azzi Fudd.

Fudd only took 13 shots and made 6 and increased her season three point shooting with a 2-3 effort in this game. Fourteen points is not what is expected from her, but Duke did a nice job denying her the ball in her comfort zone but when you have a Robin to her Batman, sometimes the Boy Wonder scores the most points.

The smallish frontcourt of Aaliyah Edwards and Aubrey Griffin were on top of their game as well. Griffin only scored 8 points on her 4-8 shooting, but her speed and athleticism on the defensive end was game impacting. Edwards is coninuing her double-double assault with 17 points and 11 rebounds. It's now three of her four games. Her mid-range game was imppressive tonight!!

Off the bench, Patterson and Ducharme made some nice comtributions during the game. Between them they totaled 10 points and 5 rebounds. More importantly, they game the starters some rest. With more experience for Patterson and getting into game shape for Ducharme, even more contributions will be there.

Hmmm....did I miss anyone? Oh yeah. Only the best passing point guard in the country. Nika Muhl hit her average of 10 assists. She grabbed 4 tough rebounds and went 4-4 from the foul line. Throw in 6 rebounds and 6 points along with 2 steals and only 1 turnover and you have a great stat line. But it's much more than numbers that Nika brings to the table. She has turned into an amazing leader on and off the court. Talk about an extension of the coach! After the game, Geno and then Lou was intviewed. After the Lou interview the camera showed Nika and Geno in conversation. She is always learning and Geno is always teaching.

The defense for the Huskies was just terrific for the entire game. While Duke did hit some early three pointers, starting out 3-5, they went 3-19 the rest of the way. And UConn held them to 32.8% from the field and 25% on threes. UConn also forced 14 turnovers and held the Blue Devils to 50 points.

The championship game is Sunday against Iowa and their superstar Caitlen Clark. She had 28 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists against Oregon State in their 73-59 win. Should be another great game for UConn and a matchup repeat from two seasons ago Sweet Sixteen game that UConn won 92-72.

Straight from the Dog

Only one upset in the 14 Top 25 games Friday night. And it was good news again for the Big East. DePaul, coming into their game against No. 14 Maryland with a 2-2 record beat the Terps 76-67. Super Sophomore Aneesa Morrow led the Blue Demons with 22 points and 10 rebounds. She has expanded her game, taking it beyond the arc, going 3-8 on threes. I'm kinda stunned that she took  8 three point shots. If she can regularly hit those shots...well....wow. Just wow. Good win for Doug Bruno, my favorite women's coach not from the UConn coaching tree.

Well, lookey here. Tennessee won a game! They beat up on Colorado 69-51 at Thompson Boiling Arena. All is good in Rocky Top, right? Well, let me take a closer look at the numbers.

The Lady Vols were led by there two stars, Jordan Horston and Rickea Jackson. Horston scored 23 points on 10-14 shooting. She had 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals and more importantly for the usual turnover machine, she only had one turnover. Jackson score 20 points on 8-11 shooting, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. A dominate performance by these two players. However....and you know I have an however..lol....

While Jackson and Horston shot 18-25 between them, the rest of the team shot 8-29 from the field. The team shot only 2-17 on threes.

Three other starters shot 2-5 from the field and 0-3 on threes. I guess since Jackson and Horston were so dominant, it didn't matter, but this is usually a team game and not a 2 on 5. You can see how those two players were going 1-1 as Tennessee had only 12 assists and 22 turnovers.

Pretty much more of the same against a weak Colorado team. They get to do this again against an even weaker Eastern Kentucky team before their next real challenge against No. 11 Virginia Tech. Looking forward to that game.
