Congrats to AAC partner Tulane who beat big bad SEC team Mississippi 61-59. I believe that the AAC is leading the season series with the SEC.

Top 15 matchup with No. 14 Tennessee visiting No. 15 Stanford.

Stanford beat up the Lady Vols 69-55 behind the terrific play of their Junior guard Lili Thompson. Thompson was just too quick for any of the Tennessee guards and got to the basket at will. She ended up with 19 points, 7 rebounds along with 4 assists. Erica McCall added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Vols trailed by as many as 21 but did make a comeback closing to 54-47 with 5:37 remaining to play. But it was too little too late.

The Cardinal shot 50% from the field but only 2-11 on threes. Add that to the 20 turnovers and you have to wonder how they won by 14. They did outrebound Tennessee 41-33. But the real story here is how bad Tennessee is.

Tennessee shot only 31.7% from the field and if it wasn't for a 6-9 spurt to start the 4th quarter, it would have been a lot worse. They only made 3-14 on threes. This is truly the team that can't shoot straight.

I did notice one interesting thing. In the first quarter, Deshields threw up an airball. The crowd was loud after that chanting "airball, airball" whenever Deshields had the ball in her hands.

One time down the court, the crowd is chanting and Deshields uses a screen to take and make a mid-range jumper. As she runs back down the court, she clearly signals to the students with the "bring it on"   hand wave. Maybe if you were actually accomplishing something, like when Taurasi made phone signal for "call me" to the Duke fans. That was done with a little humor.

To add to that, that idiot Carolyn Peck, maybe the worst color commentator ever, said after the replay that she was signaling to the bench. Yeah....the bench was on the opposite side of the court to where she was waving.

It's clear that this young woman does not help the chemistry of the Lady Vol team. She shoots too much, has a very big ego. Such a physical talent. It would be great if she can figure out the mental and emotional part of being great. I don't think Warlick is the right coach to help her do that.

I would like to thank my friend Cat for transposing Geno's radio show from this past Monday. Some great information. It's long!!!

Enjoy!!!

Geno said players like practice during exams, allows them to get heads out of the books, get some exercise, break a sweat.  The team had 2 days off so had pep in their step today.

Team just finished a crazy stretch.  FSU is really good, big and strong and play a physical game.  They don't look like an ACC team, they look like an old Big East team.  Sue Semrau does a great job, good defensively every year.  They make it to get points and they rebound heck out of the ball.  Both guards really good despite turnovers.  They were the worst kind of turnovers, live ball turnovers that we could turn in to baskets.  Sue was really upset about that as they can control that part of the game.

On the play of the big 3 (Stewart, Tuck and Mo) and their play against Florida State, we talked after the game that they've been through an awful lot, know how to win games.  We need them in big games to do exactly what they did Friday night so everyone else can do their part and pitch in.

Napheesa -- that 5th spot on the floor for us.  We lost our 5th starter and we lost our first sub off the bench (Stokes) from last year so if you put Napheesa and Gabby in to one person they had a good night. 10 points, 11 rebounds and a couple of steals.   That's good production from your 5th starter.  If we can get Saniya back in to the mix, get Lou healthy and see what that adds, if we can get double figures from them combined every night.  Throw in a big body, Butler, who should play against LSU.  People think Natalie Butler is the second coming of Kara Wolters and she's not; or Stefanie Dolson.  People who think when Natalie Butler steps on the floor -- and chance are pretty good it'll be Monday against LSU -- she is the reincarnation of Dolson or Wolters are out of their minds.  Number one, she hasn't played in a really long time; number two, that's not who she is.  She needs to be a really good Natalie Butler for us and that's all.  She'll be able to do certain things that others on our team can't do and that's because of the space she takes up and her size.  Rebounding is an area that will help us immediately.

One of things that gets lost, people talk about teams going 10-deep.  Being 10-deep doesn't mean anything unless they allow you to play 10 on 10 (unless you're Bruno!).  We won lots of championships playing 6 players because that keeps your 6 best players on the court.  It's impossible to think you'll be as good playing 10 players.

Kia Nurse had a good game Friday night.  One of shots she made used the backboard.  Old school style you don't often see.  Mid-range game disappearing.  Baseball analytics stuff has infected basketball.  Only allowed to take 2 types of shots (layups and 3s).  I thinks a high percentage shot is an open shot for a good shooter.  We have drills we do every day that the only shots are bank shots.

Geno likes the way the team is situated now.  People starting to settle in to roles on the team.  Even with 4 returning starters, that doesn't mean they'll be exactly the same as last year.  Where are we going to make up for Kaleena's 3s?  Players may think they have to do that.  Where are we going to get the defensive help Stokes gave us?  We're getting there; we're pretty good.  Not as good defensively as we were last year.  We're giving up more points.  We score a lot of points and that can be dangerous because we score so easily that we think we'll just out-score opponents.  We did a good job defensively against Florida State.

There was a second part when Kara Lawson joined the show. I'll share that in tomorrow's Dailies.

From David in Naples

Breanna Stewart is a match-up nightmare for most opponents, who often try to double cover her. Maybe they should try the whole team.

1. All of UConn's opponents combined are shooting 36% from three point range. Stewie is shooting 44%.
2. Opponents have blocked 20 UConn shots in 8 games. Stewie has blocked 27 of theirs.
3. Stewie has made 37 free throws. Combined, opponents have made 31, with 7 more attempts.
4. Stewart makes a point, grabs a rebound, nabs a steal, makes an assist or blocks a shot every 45 seconds she is on the court. (329 divided by 252 minutes)
Opponents need 1 minute and 50 seconds to do the same.
5. Stewie is shooting 63% from the field. Opponents are shooting the reverse at 36%.

A new DoggyDailies feature. What I'll do here is bring up some of the more controversial topics in WCBB (mostly UConn stuff). Some are conversations and reactions from fans on those wild and crazy message boards. Others are just things that are interesting to me.  I'll give them my DoggyDaddy spin. Comment if you'd like. Hopefully you all enjoy the craziness!!

Just to quickly revisit my "what the ????" from yesterday about weak OOC schedules, I found this great response to the defense of weak scheduling -

"This is not about schedule strength, conference play, size or status of program - its about Power Five Conference Teams with multimillion dollar budgets scheduling small overmatched schools at home in their early OOC schedule to get undeserved national ranking because a bunch of mindless morons who vote in these national polls don't care enough to actually spend 10 minutes on analyzing the schools before they vote."

Exactly.

So, I was wondering what I could write about in my new section of the blog. Well, it didn't take long to peruse a message board and find this winning post -

"Geno is holding Williams back, kid won’t even shoot because if she misses a shot she’ll have to grab a seat next to CD on the bench, so she’s told to just rebound and go for steals because that’s what your good at. Louconn will continue to have 2 for 9 shooting nights until she’s moved to the beach getting garbage time in March and maybe make the AAC All-Freshman team. I’m really not surprised that Lou has struggled, her sister have been nothing but role players in college, why would the apple fall that far from the tree?"

This is from an Oklahoma fan. He must still be upset from when Taurasi led UConn to a championship game win over Oklahoma. Lots of sour grapes.

Williams is a work in process. She has already hit more mid-range jumpers than she did all last season. He has never taken her out because she missed a shot. Like all the players, if they take a bad shot they will hear about it. But I have watched every minute if every game Williams has played and she has never taken her out like that. Told her to just rebounds and go for steals? Dumb comment. That clearly has never happened.

Katie Lou (I'm not a fan of the name louconn) could certainly have bad nights. Clearly this moron is not a fan of Katie Lou or her family. Such anger. She is already coming off the bench this year, so how will be moved there? Getting garbage time in March? The only garbage time was the time I spent reading and responding to such drivel.

Well....that's it for now!!!!

  1. Man, ya always gotta wonder what the back story is behind venomous comments by an OU fan about a UConn freshman, with gratuitous shots to current and former Stanford players. You would think the animosity would, at least, revolve around your own team's rivals, or conference or something.
