DoggyDaddy's Dailies 12/22/15

******************************************************************************

UConn played Monday night against LSU without their leading scorer and best player, Breanna Stewart. She was in street clothes for the game (and looking amazing) after spraining her ankle in practice. They say it's not serious, so I won't even think about her missing the next game against No. 5 Maryland next Monday.

UConn won this game handily behind 14 points from Morgan Tuck and 17 from Jefferson, 86-40.

Here is my Post Game Report

******************************************************************************
What a terrible loss for DePaul on Monday. They were at home and played Loyola (Chi) in an afternoon game.

The first quarter was close fairly close. DePaul had an 11-2 lead at one point but Loyola outscore DePaul 17-11 to close to 22-19 at the end of the quarter. Loyola came out firing in the second quarter, scoring the first 11 points using 3 three-pointers and a layup to take a 30-22 lead. The rest of the quarter was a lot of back and forth and DePaul finished the half down 11 points, 41-30.

DePaul closed to four points, 45-41 using a quick 11-4 run but Loyola was able to stretch that lead back out to 11 points again at the end of the 3rd quarter.

After more back and forth in the 4th quarter, DePaul used two three pointers to close to four again, 72-68 with 4:30 left in the game. Loyola outscored DePaul 16-7 to close the game, many of those from the free throw line to win the game 88-75.

Keep in mind that Loyola came into this game with a 2-7 record, losing to Miami by 27, Western Michigan by 23, Michigan State by 29. DePaul played some pretty awful defense in this game, allowing Loyola to shoot 60% from the field and 40% on threes.

This loss is the kind that the committee will look at when doing their seeding.

This is either a case of more parity, the AAC improving or the SEC being overrated. My guess is that this is a case of all three.

No. 9 Mississippi State defeated SMU 72-70 in the finals of the Puerto Rico classic. It's unbelievable that a top ten team would eek out a win against a now 5-6 bottom of the AAC team like SMU. SU scored only 7 points in the last quarter. Ugly.

Even in their losses, SMU has been much more competitive than the 7-23 team from last season and I expect them to do better in the conference schedule.

Mississippi State again showed that they can win and look lousy doing it. Maybe they turn it on in conference play, but I can't see them being more than a .500 team in the SEC.

What a fun game between No. 19 UCLA and No. 21 California. The game went into double overtime before the Cal Bears pulled it out. I'll write more about this game in tomorrow's dailies. It deserves some seriously scrutiny! No time Monday night.

From David in Naples

UConn owns the longest winning streak in WCBB, with 90 straight wins in 2008-2010. They also own the 2nd longest streak with 70 victories in 2001-2003.

The Stanford loss last year broke UConn's  46 game streak, their 3rd longest. With the win over LSU tonight they stretched the current streak to 46 games.

As a result of those last two winning streaks, the Huskies have won
93 of their last 94 games.

Despite the fact that UConn plays LSU Monday, the discussion on the interweb rages about how good Maryland is and how they are "ready" for UConn. I believe that game is in a week at some place call MSG. Here is a good one for you:

"Before people write off Maryland completely - the Terripins like to shoot the three are there are, count 'em, 8 players that shoot from the arc.
Two players average over 50% (Brene Mosley is almost 60%)and as a team, MD hits 40%. If they hit threes like DePaul and ND did, it could be long night."

1. There is no way UConn can guard 8 players all shooting 3s at the same time. We're doooomed.
2. Maryland hits 3s at 40%, so they will have to improve by 5%-25% over that to "shoot like DePaul and ND".....
3. On the other hand, if they "hit threes like DePaul and ND" won't they lose by between 10 and 16...??
4. Mosley, the 60% three pt shooter has tried 22 in 11 games... she made 13. That's 1.2 per game.

4b. Mosley shoots as many per game as Tuck. Still worried?

5. One of those 8 players is Chloe Pavlech who plays 20 minutes and shoots 17.6% (3-17).

6. Against teams with a pulse, they shot 1-10 against South Dakota State, Minus Moseley 2-8 against Syracuse (with that coward of a coach). Other than that, they played an embarrassingly weak schedule. It does matter.
Thanks to David in Naples for co-authoring this with me.
