Here is my UConn/DePaul Post Game Report

*********************************************************************************

As much as it pains me to say, congrats to the Tennessee Lady Vols who beat No. 2 Texas 82-75 in a very physical game

Tennessee jumped to a 10-2 lead and held on to that lead for the entire game. It did get as close as 1 point late in the game, but Tennessee did just enough from the free throw line to put the game away.

OK, that is as nice as I can be about this game.

If anyone brags about this game, they should be forced to watch it over and over.

Both teams were pretty putrid on offense the first three quarters, and in the last quarter both teams played zero defense. It's a sad state of affairs in WCBB is this Texas team was really the No. 2 team in the country. They should improve when the very talented Joyner Holmes returns for second semester, but it was hard to be impressed with either team.

Both teams were shooting around 30% from the field the first three quarters before they both exploded on offense thanks to bad defense in the fourth quarter. And for the game, Texas was 3-18 on threes and Tennessee was 2-13.

Texas had 16 turnovers and only 9 assists. Tennessee had 18 turnovers and only 10 assists.

For Tennessee, they were led by their seniors Jamie Nared and Mercedes Russell. Nared had 23 points, but much of that was from the foul line late in the game. She was 6-20 from the field and 0-4 on threes but she did have 13 rebounds including a could of key offensive rebounds late in the game. Russell had 15 points and 12 rebounds. But as the announcers pointed out, a couple of those baskets were on long passes when she didn't get past half court. Is she really that out of shape? Or that lazy?

Texas was led by senior guard Arial Atkins who had 21 points. In a disappointing performance, Big 12 player of the year Brooke McCarty, who scored only 8 points and was 2-16 from the field and 0-6 on threes. She is a much better player than that and did not rise to the occasion.

So, how did the "game changer" Tennessee freshman do? Well they had their moments.

Westbrook had a very good first half where she had all 15 of her points. But she had zero points in the second half and only had 2 assists and 7 turnovers.

Davis had a tough outing but she had some big rebounds. She was 2-9 from the field and scored 9 point and grabbed 7 rebounds. No assists and 3 turnovers.

Hayes was big late in the game with a couple of baskets but missed a couple of important free throws down the stretch. She did have 8 points, 4 assists and only 2 turnovers.

KK (too difficult to spell) did not play in this game. I don't know if her foot injury acted up or Holly didn't think she was ready for this game.

So, no, not game changers, but lots of promise for the Lady Vols.

Wired for Sound Warlick coaching her team - "Do not let up, right? battle, battle every possession, battle. Take good shots, they get one bad shot, get together right now, get together....grab the ball, let's finish this". Wow....such great strategy.

Announcer after Westbrook hitting her second three pointer - "Didn't you read the scouting report?"

Duh, yeah.....she was hitting at 33%.

As unimpressive as Texas was, I'm not ready to say that Tennessee is still that good. But I'm not sure other than Notre Dame and South Carolina and maybe Mississippi State that there are any teams any better.

Image result for going down
Remember when I posted how overrated Kentucky was and after their loss to Florida Gulf Coast that they didn't deserve a top 25 ranking.

Well, they lost again in their two game Florida visit, getting beat by Miami 65-54. Kentucky only scored 6 points in the fourth quarter. I watched some of this game and it was ugly for both teams.

But Miami hit a big three to extend their lead and put it away from the foul line.

I'm sure now that Kentucky will drop out of the Top 25.

UConn has two very good three-point shooters, and neither of them is named Katie Lou. The backcourt of Kia and Crystal are a combined 45-83 from outside the arc. That is 54.2%..!!  Kia has made 22 threes at an accuracy rate of 55% & her partner has netted 23 for a 53.5% rate. Talk about balance..! :D  The two Huskies have alternated hot shooting nights with at least one making over 63% of their threes in almost every game. The one exception was Michigan State when Kia went 2-6 and Crystal was 1-6. Here's the hot shooter each game:

Game 1 - Crystal   6-7 or 85%
Game 2 - Crystal  4-5 or 80%
Game 3 - Kia         5-8 or 63%
Game 4 - Crystal  3-4 or 75%
Game 5 - Kia         2-6 or 33%
Game 6 - Kia         8-8 or 100%
Game 7 - Kia         3-4 or 75%
Game 8 - Crystal  6-7 or 85%

These three-point shooting results do two things for the offense. First, it opens up the lane for Napheesa, Azura, and Gabby. Clog the middle to stop in close shots and Kia or Crystal make you pay. Second, it leaves the current 3rd best three-point shooter, open on the wing. And, she is no slouch. Katie Lou is 7-19 or 37%. But, we all know she could go 10-10 and shoot lights out on any night. Overall, great inside-outside balance.

Three-point shooting is not limited to those 3 players. Pheesa is a respectable 6-18 or 33% from long range. Espinoza-Hunter is better than that at 4-9 or 45%. Megan, while only 3-12 (25%) can get hot, as the UCLA game showed. Even Z has 3 threes in 20 tries.

UConn, as a team, is 69-172 or 40.1% from 3 point range. Opponents are only 54-185 or 29.2% from outside the arc. A great reason the Huskies are 8-0 and ranked #1.

Go Huskies..!!
