December 15th is a big anniversary for me. It's 15 years since I quit smoking cigarettes. I had smoked since I was 18 and quit 2 weeks before I turned 50. Hopefully my lungs are nice and pink again!!!

For all you smokers (Son!!!) out there....you too can quit. I did it cold turkey and just handled each craving one at a time. It wasn't easy but it was worth it.

UConn has built a reputation for playing great defense.

This year's team has gone through the hardest part of the schedule only giving up 491 points in 8 games. That comes out to 61.4 points per game. That average will certainly come down during the AAC part of the schedule. Here are the full year points against average for the last three years:

2016-17 Opponents avg = 54.9 ppg
2015-16 Opponents avg = 48.3 ppg
2014-15 Opponents avg = 48.6 ppg

UConn's opponents are currently making 35.2% of all their shots from the field. That compares well enough to the previous years, but should also improve as the season goes on and the defense comes together. Here are the field goal % for opponents over the last three years.

2016-17 Opponents % = 35.1%
2015-16 Opponents % = 33.2%
2014-15 Opponents % = 30.9%

One final breakdown. Points scored by opponents in the 1st period, this season, is 12.8 points. Last year, it was 11.8 and two seasons ago it was 11.6 points. By comparison, the average for opponents in the 4th period currently is 20.5 points. Last year it was 14.2 points per period. In other words, almost all the difference in opponent scoring is from the 4th period.

Update on Duke..! The Blue Devils, ranked #14 in the country & fresh off convincing victories against UNC Greensboro and Winthrop (the college, not the character in the movie Trading Places), take things up another notch with upcoming games vs Maine, Wyoming and Liberty. None of those teams are ranked and have 12 combined losses already. All the games are at home, to provide the Dukies with a "safe place" and prevent them from feeling unloved. The mandatory ACC schedule takes over after that with away games at Miami and #3 Louisville. What should be an 11-2 record may take a hit or two in those games...!!
