Yes, it looks like we have seen the last of Saylor in a UConn uniform. I saw her on the bench duruing the broadcast and she was smiling and happy. I'm sure she is comfortable with her decision. Between the injuries and the big and talented roster, there is no surprise that this happened.

Good luck to Saylor wherever she ends up. Just please don't transfer to Tennessee. Maybe Vanderbilt and Coach Ralph?

Lots of movement in the Top 25 after one week of action.

In fact, I don't think I've ever seen so much change in one week for as long as I've been following it.

The biggest jump was Texas, who made a gigantic leap to the No. 12 spot, a change of 13 places.  I guess that win over No. 3 Stanford made a big impact on the voters. Justifiably so as it was on Stanfords home court over the defending national champion.

The second biggest change was Arizona, who jumped 11 spots from No. 22 to No. 11 after beating No. 6 Louisville in overtime. Not sure they deserved that big a jump.

Indiana moved up 4 spots after beating up on No. 13 Kentucky who is now No. 19 after dropping 6 places. The Hoosiers move into the No. 4 location is new territory for them.

Stanford dropped 4 places to No. 7.  They really look to be missing last years point guard.

9 teams dropped 1 or 2 places and didn't lose a game this week. The product of Texas and Arizona jumping to much. One team though lost 4 spots, from No. 17 to No. 21 and that was Ohio State. They played two week teams holding both of them to 48 points and winning by 23 and 38 points. Not sure why the big drop. Pollsters are weird.

No upsets Monday and mostly blowouts. Typical early season OOC schedules.

Just gonna list the final scores.

No. 5 NCST 100 Towson 52

No. 6 Baylor 78 New Orleans 39

No. 11 Arizona 93 Texas Southern 38

No. 14 Iowa State 75 South Dakota State 56

No. 16 Tennessee 52 No. 23 South Florida 49

No. 24 Texas A&M 95 DePaul 75

Well, after 7 years and hundreds of games, this is a first. We have a repeat winner for the infamous UGGY award for the ugliest game of the night.

This was easy as I watched, as painful as it was, the Tennessee/South Florida game. The winner and loser doesn't matter, it's how they played that counts when I give out this award. And boy, did they both play poorly.

If I told you one team shot 33% from the field 0-13 on threes, 8-18 from the FT Line with 13 turnovers and scored 52 points, you would say there was no way that team won. But win Tennessee did.

That's because South Florida only scored 49 pointes, shot 28% from the field and 34% on threes along with 60% on FT's. They added 14 turnovers.

The stats are really bad but if you watched, the play looked much worse.

So congrats to Tennessee for a repeat performance. They play a Texas team next. Yeah, the one that just beat Stanford. Maybe a three-peat???

Ok, maybe I'm picking on them a little. I really don't like the team and their fans. But Tennessee is 3-0 and possibly the worst 3-0 ranked team in history. Hyperbole? You be the judge.

They have scored 59, 49 and 52 in their three games. How have they shot the ball? How does 36.4% from the field sound? Off key, huh. Their three point shooting is even worse. 6-43. That is a nauseating 14%. Even without defense they are missing shots. Their FREE throws are clanging off the rim at 51.9%.

If they had a percentage for missed bunnies? They would be king of the rabbit burrow.

They are averaging 17 turnovers per game and only 9 assists. Yes an under 1.0 assists to turnover ratio.

It appears that the fans are catching on to this shit show. The once proud Lady Vol fans used to fill up TBA with 13,000-15,000 fans. Then they dropped to 9-10,000. So far this year they are averaging around 6,000 for the two home games. 6017 for a game against a ranked team. Not good.

Now, as I said earlier, they have Texas next on Sunday at 1:00. They are much better than the three teams Tennessee has played so far. It could get ugly.

The game is on ESPN. Can't wait?

Perusing the media guide

The new media guide was recently posted which is always good to scan for interesting nuggets. Doggy has the link in his "UConn Info" section. I’ve often looked at our all-time records by opponent, but this year I decided to look at Auriemma only opponents.

It won’t exactly be breaking news that he has a good record. 1118 wins for an astounding 88.7% winning percentage.

His record includes games against 177 teams. For perspective, there are 349 Division I team so UConn, under Auriemma, has played almost exactly half of them. That said, not every one of the 177 teams is in Division I. Queens College is now a Division II team but was Division I when we played them. We also had a game against U.S International, as the opening game in 1986. I think they were a collection of all-stars, but that’s mostly a guess, because we lost. My cursory search turned up nothing. Does anyone have more information about this game?

UConn has a winning record against all but six of these teams. That’s right, against 171 teams, we have a winning record, and only six teams can claim to have a 500 or better record against UConn. Of those six teams, four of them are exactly records of 1 – 1, so only two teams have a winning record against UConn under Auriemma.

One of those teams is US international, who won 96-88 in the opening game of the 1986–87 season on a neutral court. Revenge may be hard to come by because I don’t think they still exist.

The other team with a winning record is LaSalle who is 3–0 against Auriemma. They also played one game pre-Auriemma, so they have a lifetime record of 4–0 against UConn. This one puzzles me. On one hand, LaSalle is currently ranked 239 by Massey, so not the type of opponent that Geno would be itching to schedule, but because they are in Philadelphia, I thought they would be a few occasions he would want them on the schedule for game relatively close by and a chance to visit family, not to mention the opportunity to erase this dark stain on his record. (I know, I know, that’s not how he rolls so that may explain it.)

The four teams with a 1—1 record include:

1. Arizona

2. Arkansas

3. New Hampshire

4. Ball State

One of those has already been rectified this season. Arkansas will always have a notable win on the resume, but at the moment, they can no longer claim to be in the rarefied air of teams with a lifetime record against Auriemma’s UConn of 500 or better. It’s not inconceivable we will meet Arizona in a postseason tournament sometime. Not so likely will meet New Hampshire there, but it’s my alma mater, so I would love to see them scheduled. Probably not strong enough to deserve that on its own.

Leading up to what I find to be the most astounding stat. Against 129 of these 177 teams, Geno has a perfect record 496–0. 129 teams have not a single win against UConn under Auriemma. That’s astounding.

USF has the honors for most frustrated, for two different reasons. They’ve had 32 opportunities to win without a single success, and that, as close as possible, taking UConn to overtime in 2004. West Virginia is the bridesmaid with 24 opportunities and zero wins.

  2. USA Assistant Coach Recalls Beating Geno
    Published September 18, 2014 • Updated on September 18, 2014 at 12:36 pm

There are grand total of two schools that can claim a winning record against Geno Auriemma. One no longer exists -- U.S. International of San Diego, which is now Alliant International University ... and doesn't have a basketball team -- and the other is LaSalle.

U.S. International of San Diego is 1-0 against UConn after a 96-88 win back in November 1986. LaSalle, meanwhile, holds a 3-0 lead over the Huskies and Auriemma, the last meeting coming in December 1989.

Such obscure facts might remain obscure if not for Cheryl Reeve serving as a reminder. She's an assistant on Auriemma's Team USA staff who played at LaSalle from 1984-1988.

“I was on the bench and I remember it well, like it was yesterday,” Reeve told SNY.com's Carl Adamec. “I remember Kelly Greenberg got hurt, tore her eardrum, near the end of the game. We came back and won.

“I actually go back a little further with Geno. In 1986, UConn came down and played in the La Salle tournament we had. I was a player and we beat them. I let him know about it. Not that many people can say they were on a team that beat Geno’s team. But that was before UConn was UConn.”

Reeve's line from the '86 game: six points, three assists, four turnovers.

    Auriemma's response upon hearing this?

"She reminds me of it all the time,” he told Adamec. “Four turnovers? We’ll be talking about that.”
