Doggy's Doghouse 11/12/18

My prayers go out to our fellow citizens in California that are in danger from the horrible forest fires that are destroying property and lives.

I was watching the NY Giant/ SF 49ers game in San Francisco and the air was thick with smoke from fires over 200 miles away.

UConn's next game is an exhibition game against Southern Connecticut. Kinda weird to have an exhibition game after the regular season starts. You just hope no one gets hurt.

It will be a good time for Williams to show Geno that she can add more to the box score after he used his usual sarcastic tone to let her know he needs more from her. "She played?" when asked about her effort in the first game. Too funny!

The other freshman Nelson-Ododa could use a better effort in this game to get her back into the early rotation instead of mop up time minutes. UConn really, really needs her to contribute and get up to speed quickly this season.

I'm still hoping to get to the game and maybe bring Logan. It's my anniversary (43 years) and my wife might have other plans for me.

No. 1 Notre Dame defeated Pennsylvania 75-55 with four starters in double digit scoring and behind 21 points from Ogunbowale who took 19 shots and only made 6 in her usual volume scoring effort. Shepard added 17 points and 8 rebounds and Turner looked good with a double double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Mabrey was out against for the Irish with a quad injury. She is day to day. Her replacement in the starting lineup, Freshman Jordan Nixon, was scoreless but did add 5 assists. Hell, I could have 5 assists if I played with those other four starters.

Gee, I guess it appears that UConn isn't the only team with a "bench" issue. Notre Dame only won the fourth quarter by a 15-13 score and in the last 6 minutes they were outscored 7-4 with 2 of those points scored by a starter who was still in the game.

Oh my, how will the Irish ever survive.

In the other Top 25 game Monday, No. 11 Texas was able to hold off a game North Texas State team winning 64-54.

Texas was pretty unimpressive in this game. They only scored 64 points and shot only 40% from the field. They were 0-7 on threes and 14-25 on free throws. They also had 16 turnovers. Not a good offensive showing.

Texas freshman Collier, who had first verballed to UConn before changing her mind and signing with the Longhorns, played a solid 19 minutes scoring 12 points and adding 9 rebounds. She had the usual freshman mistakes with 5 turnovers.

As predicted, Duke fell out of the top 25 after losing to Northwestern in their opener. They were ranked No. 21. They are in the "other with votes" area and sit at No. 29 if you count down. Northwestern jumped to No. 28 in that list.

Duke has a couple of good players in Odom and Gorlecki, but not much else. Kyra Lambert is trying to bounce back from an ACL injury in last years NCAA tournament and should round into shape. She started 33 games at point guard two years ago.

I can see less than 20 wins and no NCAA tournament for this version of Duke. Tough season for some of my favorite Duke fans.

Probably the 2nd best news from the Ohio State victory, after the 85-53 score, was the limited minutes the starters needed to play. Crystal played 31 minutes before Geno finally took her out after two violent collisions. But, Katie Lou only logged 30 minutes, Napheesa played only 26 and Megan and Christyn each had 28 before departing for the bench. All five got their work done on the court and looked good. Early in the season the goal is enough minutes to get in game shape, but not too much to tempt the injury gods.
The bench had 57 minutes of playing time. Leading the pack was Coombs (17 minutes) and Irwin (13 minutes). Molly chipped in 11 minutes and Batouly had 6. While many want to see the subs play better basketball, at this point I'll take the starters on the bench and the score not changing too dramatically.

Go Huskies..!!
