Team Overviews

Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt has already played 4 games this season. They lost to RPI 92 North Alabama 74-71,
RPI 112 65-58 and beat up on RPI 244 Austin Peay 99-70. Thursday night they played No. 17 North Carolina on the road and lost 74-54. Not a good start for the Commodores. Hey, last year they lost their first four games of the season, so this is an improvement. But they ended up 7-24 so maybe, just maybe this is just a bad team.

UConn

UConn has only played one regular season game, an 85-53 win over a diminished Ohio State team. Not much more to add this early in the season.

Coach Stephanie White

Stephanie White enters her third season at the helm of the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team in 2018-19. White was named the head coach of the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team in May of 2016, becoming just the fifth all-time head coach in the history of the Vanderbilt program.

When she arrived in Nashville prior to the 2016-17 season, White inherited a young Vanderbilt team that featured only two seniors and relied heavily on five freshmen. White guided the Commodores to a 14-16 overall record in her first season with the team, including a 4-12 mark in the SEC during the 2016-17 campaign.

White and the Vanderbilt squad played one of the nation’s toughest schedules in 2017-18 and with a team that featured 10 underclassmen struggled in White’s second season on West End. The 2017-18 season saw seniors Rachel Bell and Christa Reed join the 1,000-point club while freshman Chelsie Hall, who started each game of her rookie season, was named to the SEC All-Freshman team. Kaleigh Clemons-Green was also recognized on the SEC Community Service Team for her volunteer efforts.

True to history, the Commodores were one of the top offensive teams in the country in White’s second year. Vanderbilt ranked in the top 30 nationally in 3-pt field goal percentage (No. 17 -.365) and field goal percentage (No. 30-.450). Sophomore Cierra Walker also concluded her sophomore campaign ranked No. 17 nationally in 3-PT field goal percentage (.425).

Having enjoyed success at virtually every level of basketball as a player and coach, White arrived at Vanderbilt after spending two seasons as the head coach of WNBA’s Indiana Fever. She took the Fever to the playoffs in each of her two seasons, including a trip to the WNBA finals in 2015.

As a collegiate player, White enjoyed a highly successful career at Purdue, where she earned national Player of the Year honors after helping lead the Boilermakers to the 1999 NCAA championship as a senior. That season, she also received the Wade Trophy (given to the nation’s top female player) and was named Big Ten Conference Player of the Year.

“Stephanie White has been a winner in every phase of her career,” Vanderbilt athletic director David Williams said. “She was the nation’s high school player of the year, she was the NCAA’s Player of the Year on a national championship team and she led her WNBA team into the finals in her first year. She was an outstanding scholar. She wants to coach at Vanderbilt and we believe she is just the person to lead our program back into national prominence.”

White averaged double-figure scoring in all four seasons of her college career, including 20.2 points per game as a senior, and amassed 2,182 points for her career. White was inducted into the Purdue Athletics Hall of Fame on April 21, 2006.

 Game Analysis

On offense Vanderbilt does a lot of screening for the ball handler looking for open lanes to the basket. I saw several plays where they were able to get the ball to players cutting to the hoop. But they are prone for offensive fouls on those plays. They do put up around 15 three pointers per game but they are only shooting them at 28.6%. Ciera Walker is their best three point shooter and loves to hoist them up from anywhere and she is 9-19 in her last two games. Their threat on the inside is 6'5" Mariella Fasoula a transfer from Boston College, who had to sit out last season. She has a ton of international experience and is solid on the block when she can catch the ball in the paint. Chelsea Hall though is the straw that stirs whatever drink this team can provide. She is a quick guard that can get to the basket and create fouls on the defense. Last season she made the SEC All-Freshmen team. Overall this is not a high powered offensive team.

On defense Vanderbilt plays a standard switching man-to-man defense. They look to pressure the ball in the half court but UConn will take advantage of that with back door cuts. UConn, when they get the defensive rebound should be able to run as Vanderbilt is slow getting back on defense. Fasoula is big but isn't a real threat to block shots and is prone to foul trouble.

UConn will pressure Vanderbilt and try to create fast breaking opportunities. With their good ball movement and slowish Vanderbilt defense, I expect we will see plenty of open shots. Look for Collier to post up the bigger Fasoula and use her good footwork to get to the basket and create foul shots for herself.

Final Prediction

It's just not a good matchup for Vanderbilt. UConn might not be big in the middle but their speed, quickness and shooting ability is bigtime trouble for the Commodores. It could get ugly really quickly.

UConn by 30+. And I'm being kind.
