Doggy's Doghouse 11/14/18

I'm working on a pre-game report for the Vanderbilt game. It should be out Thursday night.

*****************************************************************************

Two top 25 teams lost Wednesday night. Coincidently, it was two teams from the powerhouse SEC conference.

No. 14 Georgia lost to unranked UCLA 80-69. That tough minded defensive SEC team gave up 31 points in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs did manage 29 points of their own. In the second HALF.

No. 20 Texas A&M lost to No. 18 Syracuse 75-65. They did manage 30 points in the second half, so they have that going for them...

The third SEC team that played Wednesday was No. 12 Tennessee, who played one of their yummy cupcakes, beating UNC Ashville 73-46. Yes, a 27 point win. But they were up 28 in the first half. If my math is correct, that mean that Tennessee lost the second half 29-30. They were outscored in the 3rd quarter 18-8. They were missing their star point guard Westbrook, who had early foul trouble. This team can't afford to have her sitting on the bench. What little offense they run flows directly through her. With her, they looked totally lost.

Congrats to Iona on winning the first "UGGY" award for really ugly basketball.

In losing to Toledo 84-38, they showed what bad basketball is all about.

- They scored only 2 points in the third quarter
- They shot 15-54 from the field for 27.8%
- They shot 3-17 on threes for 17.6%
- They shot 5-12 on free throws for 41.7%
- They turned the ball over 18 times
- They allowed Toledo to shoot 66% in the second half

Thanks Iona!

Congrats to Rutgers head coach C.Vivian Springer on her 1000th win.  A great achievement for Coach Springer. Sadly she is the only coach with 1000 wins without an NCAA championship. Other than her number of wins her claim to fame is the few years in the early 2000's that Rutgers was able to compete evenly with UConn.

A Thousand Wins and Counting, Stringer is Among the Elite Coaches

Part I

Uconn players and fans alike can get ready for six games in 13 days over the next few weeks.  The action kicks off with a 2nd exhibition game this Thursday on November 15th vs Southern Connecticut. That is followed on Saturday, Nov. 17th, with the 2nd regular season game against Vanderbilt at the Mohegan Sun. The Huskies then travel to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands for three games in three days. They will open on Nov. 22nd with Ole Miss and then play St. John's and Purdue on the 23rd and 24th. November wraps up with a game in Hartford on the 28th against DePaul.

The schedule gets tough in December and January. Six of the next 7 games are away, including very big tests versus Notre Dame (Dec. 2), California (Dec. 22) and Baylor (Jan. 3). In total, there will be five games in December and a full nine contests in January. The schedule calms down a bit with the AAC conference games vs. the usual suspects.

Go Huskies..!!
Part II

Interesting early season trivia:

1. Kyla Irwin is leading the team in 3 point accuracy at 100%. (1-1)  Megan Walker is 2nd at 50% (1-2)
2. After 1 game, Katie Lou is the team leader in points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and personal fouls.
3. The best free throw shooter on the Huskies right now is Megan Walker at 100% (2-2). KLS is 2nd at 86% (6-7).
4. UConn had a NISE of +4 against Ohio State. OSU had a NISE of -25.
5. Napheesa is now 19th all time on UConn's scoring list at 1,643 points. She passed Barbara Turner, who had 1,629.  KLS is still #14.

Go Huskies..!!
