I was just relaxing Tuesday afternoon when I noticed the Maryland-Iowa game was on TV. I switched over, and boy, am I glad I did. What a fun half of offensive basketball. If you like defense, this game was not for you.

Maryland jumped out to a 41-21 first quarter lead. In most games that could be the halftime score. Iowa outscored the Terps in the second quarter 30-27. So Maryland went into halftime leading 68-51. Crazy.

Maryland is good. Really good. Well, on the offensive side of the ball. Katie Benzan tied her personal best with 8 threes and 24 points. She only missed one. Now THAT will help your season's shooting percentage. Miller was 3-4 for the Terps and the team was 12-16 at the half.

Not to be outdone, the precocious freshman Caitlen Clark had 29 at the half. She was just amazing going 8-11 on threes and also made all three free throws after being fouled on another three pointer. As a team they were 12-18.

So that's 24-34 between both teams. Yes, raining threes in the first half. Can't wait until the second half!!

On edit - Benzan went 1-1 on threes in the second half and ended up a Katie Lou Like 9-10 on the game. Clark looked tired in the second half and only went 1-5 on threes in the second half and 9-16 for the game.

Final score ended up 111-93. Wow...that is just insane.

I found it funny that the Big Ten announcers thought that Clark should end up National Freshman of the Year. On it's own, it's not funny. She is an amazing player and could win it. But the based it on the "fact" that Iowa plays such a tough schedule. According to NET, their SOS is 84. Not that tough. And her main competition for the award, UConn's Paige Bueckers plays against an SOS of 82.

Saw this on the Warren Nolan site. It's the breakdown of some of the data that the NET rankings folks use to calculate their ratings. I found it very interesting.

Sometimes statistics just create interesting, repeating patterns. For example, Paige now has 107 assists and UConn has 107 blocked shots. Opponents have 107 made threes. However, since they have taken 408 shots, that's only a 26% success rate. Olivia has made 4 of 15 three point tries, which is 26%. Nika has 26 personal fouls and 26 steals. Evina has 26 made threes and her jersey number is 22. Mir McLean's number is half of 22 (#11) but Mir has 22 baskets. She also is the only player with the same number of defensive and offensive rebounds... 22 of each.  8-)

Olivia has now moved into 9th place on UConn's All-Time blocked shot list with 185 blocks. Next up is #8 Maya Moore at 204, just 19 blocks away. Liv is one of two players who has started all 19 games for the Huskies. Evina is the other. Paige and Christyn have started and played in 18 games each. Geno has started 8 players in at least 2 games each.

Go Huskies..!!

No. 8 Maryland 111 Iowa 93 The Terps made 15 of its 22 attempts from beyond the arc in the matchup, good for 68.3% and setting a new program record for the best three-point percentage on more than four attempts. The two teams combined for 32 three-pointers, which is just shy of the NCAA women’s basketball record of 36. Maryland finished this matchup with four players in double-digit scoring. Senior guard Katie Benzan hit a career-high 29 points, Miller a career-high 27 points, Owusu had 24 points and senior forward Chloe Bibby finished the game with 14 points. Owusu also set a career-high with 12 assists. The Terps dominated the first quarter outscoring the Hawkeyes, 41-21, while shooting 68.2% from the floor. Maryland was 8-for-9 from behind the arc and the Terps’ eight three-pointers tie a program record for most scored in a single frame. The Terps scored 41 points with eight assists and zero turnovers. Maryland started the second quarter strong defensively. After giving up two points, they held the Hawkeyes scoreless for over two minutes until Clark snapped the scoring drought with a three. Maryland was outscored by the Hawkeyes 30-27 in the second frame. To start the second half, Maryland kept its offensive momentum going. With four minutes to go in the third quarter, the Terps were outscoring Iowa 17-9 as they held Clark scoreless.
