Injury Report

Here are a couple of tweets talking about UConn injuries.

Based on these tweets, I'd say they are all playing. Tape em up and let em go!!

******************************************************

This should be an interesting poll come Monday. Especially the Top 5.

Here is how it looked last week.

1. Louisville
2. South Carolina
3. UConn
4. NC State
5. UCLA
6. Stanford
7. Texas A&M
8. Baylor

Well, three of the top five lost.

Louisville lost to No. 4 NC State, hammered Boston College and struggled with Notre Dame.
South Carolina beat Auburn
UConn beat up St. John's and Marquette
NC State beat Louisville and lost to unranked North Carolina
UCLA lost to unranked Washington State and beat Washington

I think after these results I would have them like this:

1. South Carolina
2. UConn
3. Louisville
4. Stanford
5. Texas A&M
6, NC State
7. Baylor
8. UCLA

Wouldn't it be great if Monday nights game was No. 1 against No. 2??

And in case you haven't seen it....here is my UConn/South Carolina Pregame report.

Some basketball players do everything well, but nothing spectacularly. Evina Westbrook seems fits that description. She doesn't lead the Huskies in the two most popular stats, points scored or rebounds. She is 4th in points with 158 or a nice 11.3 per game. Rebounding, she is 2nd behind Olivia's 99, with 72. How about assists? Nope, 2nd to Paige's 74 with 70 of her own. Free throws? No again. She is 3rd best with 22-29 or 76%. Made threes? 2nd to Paige, (26 vs 34). Overall baskets made? 4th at 55. Steals? 2nd to Paige with 26. Blocked shots? 4th with 10. Minutes played? 3rd at 433 minutes total.

What is remarkable about Evina is she near the top in every category, despite not leading in any. Game in and game out she stuffs the stat line. She led the team in assists against Seton Hall with 7. She was the steal leader against Xavier with 4 and again against Villanova. Evina was the 2nd leading scorer against Tennessee with 15 points and led the team in rebounds with 14 in the DePaul victory. In the last game, against a tough Marquette, she scored 7 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, had 7 assists, blocked 3 shots and had 1 steal. All this from a player who is recovering from major knee surgery and an extended absence from the playing floor.

Hard work, leadership and whatever the team needs to win. That's what Geno gets from Evina.

Go Huskies..!!

No. 1 Louisville 71 Notre Dame 65Dana Evans scored 27 points, including five points late in the game, to lead No. 1 Louisville to victory over Notre Dame. The player of the year candidate scored 16 of her points in the first half to help Louisville take a 42-34 lead at the break. The lead would grow to 11 less than 90 seconds into the second half. However, the Fighting Irish cut that to 52-50 with 3:16 remaining in the third quarter thanks to three consecutive layups by Olivia Miles. Notre Dame had a couple of chances to tie or take the lead on ensuing possessions, but Louisville eventually responded with a 9-0 run to answer that challenge. however, a 3-pointer by Dara Mabrey would cut the Louisville lead to 66-65 with 1:41 left. They had a chance to go ahead but the Irish miss a chance on a 2-1 bream and Evans responded with a 3 of her own with 57 seconds remaining. She then iced the game with a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left. Kianna Smith added 16 and a career-high five steals. Elizabeth Balogun finished with 12 points. Miles was one of four players to score 10 points as the Irish had a balanced scoring attack. The seven Notre Dame players who scored all had at least eight points.

No. 4 North Carolina State 69 North Carolina 75Freshman Alyssa Ustby scored 20 points and North Carolina upset fourth-ranked NC State, pulling a shocker against its nearby rival for the third year in a row by winning 76-69 on Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Wolfpack (12-2, 7-2 ACC) figured to be in line to rise to the No. 1 national rankings until this outcome. NC State has delivered the only losses this season to South Carolina and Louisville -- both on the road when those teams were ranked No. 1. NC State, received 14 points from Cunane before she fouled out with less than two minutes remaining Sunday. She was limited to seven shot attempts from the field, playing just 22 minutes. North Carolina led 37-30 at halftime, but the Wolfpack went up 52-49 entering the fourth quarter. That was fueled by a 13-0 run despite Cunane on the bench in foul trouble. Kennedy Todd-Williams sank a 3-point shot with 8:58 remaining and the Tar Heels led the rest of the way. Stephanie Watts poured in 17 points, Petra Holesinska had 15 points and Janelle Bailey contributed 10 points for North Carolina. Ustby pulled in a game-high 12 rebounds. Jones had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Jada Boyd added 12 points for NC State. Raina Perez delivered 13 assists.

No. 5 UCLA 84 Washington 50Charisma Osborne scored 21 points, Michaela Onyenwere added 15 and No. 5 UCLA hammered Washington 84-50. UCLA also got 14 points from Emily Bessoir in a near-perfect shooting night. The Bruins ran out to a 37-16 halftime advantage with Bessoir scoring nine straight at one point and led by as much as 28 in the second half, using its defense to stifle the Huskies. Washington shot just 8 of 30 from the floor and missed all 11 of its 3-point shot attempts in the first half. The Huskies also committed 21 turnovers in the loss. The Bruins outscored the Huskies 15-4 in the final 8 minutes of the first half, including seven straight quick points in a minute on two Natalie Chou hustle plays and an Osborne 3 that made it 29-12 with 6 minutes left. Onyenwere and Osborne teamed up for another quick 7-0 run to start the second half, pushing the lead to 44-16 with 7:45 left in the third quarter. The game was certainly over at this point. Haley Van Dyke led Washington with 13 points. No other Huskies player reached double figures.

No. 6 Stanford 83 Utah 41Haley Jones bounced back from a 2-of-10 shooting performance two days earlier to score 12 points on 6-for-10 from the floor and freshman Cameron Brink also added 12 points as Stanford beat up on Utah. Lola Pendande scored 11 points for Utah. The Utes, coming off a 62-51 win at Cal on Friday, dropped their fourth straight to Stanford. Stanford started 8-for-11 from the field while building a 20-4 first-quarter lead as Utah began 2-for-10. The Utes finished 16-for-44 (36%) from the floor, including 4-for-17 from 3-point range. The Cardinal lead the series with Utah 27-1 and have won the past four meetings by 28 or more points.

No. 7 Texas A&M 69 No. 16 Arkansas 67No. 7 Texas A&M hosted No. 16 Arkansas at Reed Arena beating the Razorbacks 69-67. The Aggies trailed by two at the half before a big third-quarter saw them leading by entering the final period. A Jordan Nixon layup with eight seconds remaining to broke a late tie and give A&M a late lead. An the other end of the court, a three-pointer by Amber Ramirez at the buzzer was no good as the Maroon and White came out with the win. Kayla Wells finished with a game-high 21 points for the Aggies to go with five rebounds and four assists. Aaliyah Wilson finished with a double-double as she had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ciera Johnson was also in double digits with 13 points while N'dea Jones led the club with 13 rebounds. The Aggies outrebounded the Razorbacks by an incredibly wide margin, 46-18. Ramirez led the visitors with 21 points as she made five three-pointers on the game. Makayla Daniels had 13, Chelsea Dungee 12 and Erynn Barnum 10.

No. 8 Baylor 64 Kansas State 52 - NaLyssa Smith scored 17 points and No. 8 Baylor beat Kansas State 64-52 on Sunday. Dijonai Carrington and Moon Ursin each had 16 points. Ursin had six of those in the final two minutes as the Lady Bears beat the Wildcats. Kansas State was led by Ayoka Lee who scored 21 and Rachel Ranke who had 12. The Lady Bears went on a 12-0 run early in the second quarter, including two 3’s by Carrington, and never lost the lead again.

No. 11 Ohio State 83 Minnesota 59Dorka Juhasz and Aaliyah Patty each had double-doubles for Ohio State leading them to the easy win over Minnesota. Kadi Sissoko had team-highs of 13 points and nine rebounds for Minnesota but also had six of the Gophers’ turnovers. Sara Scalia and Klarke Sconiers each added 12 points for the Gophers. Juhasz scored a game-high 18 points to go with 10 rebounds, her eighth double-double of the season. Patty finished with 14 points and 10 boards, and Jacy Sheldon added 17 points and three steals. Ohio State used three early turnovers to help build a 14-4 lead to start the game, but the Gophers used a 12-5 second-quarter run to pull within four, 30-26, with 3 minutes, 40 seconds left in the half and trailed, 39-30, at intermission. Sissoko hit the first basket of the second half. but it quickly went sideways for Minnesota. The Buckeyes scored the next 15 points, 13 directly off six Gophers turnovers, for a 54-32 lead and were never threatened again. Six Ohio State players combined for 11 steals. The latter has been an issue for Minnesota all season long. Iowa used a 25-4 third-quarter run to all but end a 94-68 victory last week at Williams Arena. Ohio State led by as many as 28 points in the third and fourth quarters. Gophers leading scorer Jasmine Powell played only 18 minutes and finished with five points and four turnovers.

No. 17 Indiana 85 Iowa 72 -  In a game where both teams went on big runs for large stretches of the game, No. 17 Indiana landed the final punch and won over Iowa on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Mackenzie Holmes, Ali Patberg, Nicole Cardano Hillary, and Mackenzie Holmes all contributed over 15 points for Indiana, while Caitlin Clark led Iowa with 30 points. Iowa got off to a quick start, with the Hawkeyes getting points from Clark and Monika Czinano. The early 11-6 lead would quickly evaporate as a mix of turnovers and good shooting saw Indiana get back in the game. Iowa would get out to a big lead once again in the second quarter, with Clark contributing eight points in an 11-2 Iowa run early in the second quarter. Just like in the first quarter, Indiana fought back and reclaimed the lead going into the half, because of some solid defense and hot shooting to lead, 36-33. Clark led both teams with 19 points in the half, while Warnock grabbed an impressive eight rebounds in the half. Iowa struggled to contain the balanced scoring effort from Indiana, as the Hoosiers managed to find success both in the paint and from the perimeter. Iowa got a lifeline late on in the third quarter. With the fouls piling up for Indiana, Czinano and several other Hawkeyes managed to get to the free throw line and cut the deficit. Iowa tied things up early in the fourth, but Indiana immediately raced back out to an eight point lead and held on for the rest of the game.

No. 20 DePaul 87 Marquette 82 - Deja Church scored a career-high 24 points, Sonya Morris added 23 and her layup with 26 seconds left gave DePaul enough breathing room to outlast Marquette 87-82 in a ferocious rivalry game on Sunday. The Blue Demons had battled Marquette through a tight first half, but then opened the second with a 19-4 run and seemed on the verge of a runaway win. Marquette held DePaul scoreless for nearly all of the final five minutes of the third quarter as it chopped the lead down from 17 points to four, 63-59, and kept going into the fourth. The Golden Eagles grabbed a 64-63 lead with a 3-pointer and a layup wrapped around a DePaul turnover and the final quarter was tense all the way to the finish. Morris scored nine of her 23 in the final period, Lexi Held added 17 points and five steals and Dee Bekelja scored 18. Church also had five steals and six rebounds. Lauren Van Kleunen and Jordan King, with a career-high, each scored 21 for Marquette with Selena Lott adding 13 and Camryn Taylor 10.

No. 22 Northwestern 63 Michigan State 60 No. 22 Northwestern held on to beat Michigan State after blowing a 21-point lead. Lindsey Pulliam scored 22 points, Veronica Burton added 19 for Northwestern. The Spartans trailed 37-16 in the closing minute of the first half, had a 15-3 run to take a 58-56 lead on Janai Crooms’ jumper with 3:52 to play. Michigan State had a turnover, missed its last four shots and went 2 of 4 from the line from that point. One of those free throws tied the score at 59, but Burton quickly responded with a layup with 1:53 to go. After a Michigan State miss, Burton made a pair from the line. Down 63-59 with 40 seconds remaining, Crooms made 1 of 2 from the line and the Spartans elected not to foul. They forced a shot-clock violation with 7.5 seconds to go, but Nia Clouden’s two 3-point attempts for the tie were off the mark. Taiyier Parks scored 13 points for Michigan State, Clouden added 12 and Crooms 10.

Finally, a team plays down enough to my standards to win an UGGY award. It's been a while since I've awarded this sought after Trophy. Maybe my standards have changed? But this team is a true award winner.

I've been keeping an eye on this team. They come close before, but these numbers were to hard to ignore.

Utah dropped to 5-10 on the season after their 83-41 loss to No. 6 Stanford. The Utes have had a really bad season. In this one, they really hit the bottom.

For one, they scored only 41 points. I've seen worse, but it's the shooting percentages that did it for me.

They were 13-54 from the field for 24%. They were 1-22 on threes for 4.5%. And they were 14-25 on free throws for 54%. They added 14 turnovers and only 4 assists.

Just a wonderfully bad game! Congrats to the Utes!!!!
