Game Analysis
As I mentioned in the first Pregame Report leading scorer from last year Lucy Olsen and three other starters Zanai Jones, Bella Runyan, Christina Dalce have all left the team via either graduation or use of the portal.
As a result of that player movement, the only two players that started any games last season.
Maddie Burke, is a 6' grad student guard. She has started her last eight games. She is averaging 7 PPG and 3 RPG. Maddie is a terrific three point shooting hitting them at 43.5%. She had 9 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in the first UConn game.
The other Maddie is Maddie Webber, a 5'11" sophomore guard. She has started every game this season. She is second on the team in scoring at 12.9 PPG. She is really struggling from the field, shooting 39.0% but has been hot lately. She leads the team in three pointers taken but is only shooting 34.0%. Again, she is hot latetly. She gets to the FT line twice a game shooting 82.9%. She only had 5 points and goose eggs on rebounds and assists in the first UCOnn game going 2-9 from the field.
Leading the team in scoring is freshman Jasmine Bascoe. The 5'7" guard is averaging 15.1 PPG and leads the team in free throws taken at almost 4 per game. She is shooting them at a very high 87.7%. She also leads the team in assists at 4.2 per game. Quick hands get her a team high 2 steals per game. she had 12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in the first UConn game where she went 4-17 from the field and 2-5 on threes.
Denise Carter is a 6' forward that transferred in from Mississippi State. She leads the team in rebounds at 6.1 per game and in blocks with one per game. She is averaging 9.1 PPG on 46.5% from the field. She had 10 points and 7 rebounds 4 of them offensive in the first UConn game.
Bronag Power-Cassidy, a 5'7" guard that transferred in from Holy Cross is averaging 7.3 PPG and is the best three point shooter on the team going 24-48 on the season. She had 7 points and 3 rebounds against the Huskies in the first game. She was 3-4 from the field and 1-1 on threes.
Off the bench -
Ryanne Allen is a 6'1" Junior Guard transfer from Vanderbilt. Her overall numbers are just awful. She part of the rotation the last 6 games and has improved her numbers. She had 7 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists in the first UConn game.
Lara Edmanson, a 6' Grad Student Forward that transferred in from Santa Clara has started 10 games but then missed a few games including the first UConn game. Lara lost her starting position but has playerd decent minutes off the bench the last 4 games.
UConn beat Villanova fairly easily in their first matchup. They led 23-15 after one quarter and 43-24 at the half. A solid third quarter pushed the lead to 29 points and the Huskies coasted in from their. Final score was 83-52, a 31 point win. I predicted 30. Not to shabby.
Strong led the way with 21 points going 9-12 from the field and 3-4 on threes. She added 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 1 block for a complete game.
Paige had a nice but in some ways quiet game. She scored 15 points on an efficient 7-11 from the field. She was only 1-3 on threes.
Fudd was still getting back from her sprained knee in this one. She played 21 minutes and scored 8 points on 3-5 shooting and 2-4 on threes. For those who think she does nothing else but shoot, she had 3 rebounds and 1 steal.
Chen had a terrible shooting game going scorels on 0-5 shooting. But she had 7 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and only 1 turnover.
The best way to look at the center position is combine El Alfy and Brady's stats. So, in 27 minutes, they had 11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 block. Solid game for the bigs.
Off the bench two former starters and sophomores had good games.
Shade had 8 points and 5 rebounds, 1 assists and 1 steal in 22 minutes. KK had a terrific game scoring 15 points on 6-7 shooting and 1-1 on threes in her 24 minutes.
Morgan only saw 6 minutes in this game.
Final Prediction
Massey had the first game a 14 point spread. This one is a 19 point difference.
UConn is coming off a great shooting game in their last outing against Seton Hall. Geno said it was the best played half of the year so far. A big question is, can they bring that forward into this game? We all hope so. It would be nice to see it.
I'm feeling it. The starting lineup is really starting to get. Including El Alfy. And this is one heck of a bench. I'm hoping Aubrey gets double digit minutes in this one. Another really good offensive game in Gampel.
My guess is UConn by 35+
GO HUSKIES!!
