Yesterday I said I didn't know who FGCU was. I was reminded that Florida Gulf Coast University is where Mel Thomas was hired as Director of Basketball Operations. Mel last played  professional basketball for the Artego Bydgoszcz in the Polish Basketball League.

When Mel was at UConn I had the pleasure of meeting Mary Thomas, Mel's mom on a few occasions. She gave me some Cincinnati Chili mix and it was great. She is a sweet lady and Mel was always one of my favorites.

So, in light of all that...GO FGCU!!!!!!

It's amazing to me how one shot can change the entire perception of a team by it's fan base. And Amber Orrange's three point basket that tied the game in Palo Alto where Stanford went on in OT to beat UConn did just that.

If not for that shot, UConn would have a perfect record and they would be compared with some of the greatest UConn teams of all time. Yes, the schedule they have played might not be as good as previous seasons, but I don't think that should detract from the great stats this team as compiled. The all-time standings for this team are in parenthesis.

Points per game.........         89.1 (3)
Defensive PPG................   47.3 (3)
Scoring margin.........       +41.8  (1)
Field goal pct............         .533  (2)
Defensive FG pct.........     .294  (1)
3-point FG pct.........         .407 (4)
3-pt FG made per game...  8.4 (1)
Rebounds per game.....      44.3 (8)
Rebounding margin.....     +11.9 (7)
Assists per game......         21.3 (1)
Blocks per game.......         8.2 (1)

It's clear the current team could go down statistically as possibly the best UConn team ever. I know, they lost a game. But other than that one three point shot by Orrange, it's clear this team is just that good.

Ugly Game Of The Day

I couldn't find the info on the original team I picked, so I'm going with Ivy leagues very own Dartmouth, who lost to 16th ranked Princeton 70-31.

The Big Green scored only 12 points in the first half. The 31 points was built on 18.9% field goal shooting, 33.3% (6-18) three point shooting, 5 assists and 15 turnovers. They only grabbed 15 rebounds as well.

Congrats to another Ivy League team for winning an UGGY. It's becoming a tradition.
