 Overview

UConn can't help but be looking ahead to Monday's game with South Carolina. I know that I am having trouble writing this when I really want to work on the SC Pre-game report.  But I'll give it my best, as I'm sure the players will as well on Saturday.

Memphis is average. They are 11-11. They are 5-6 in the conference. They score 60 ppg and give up 60 ppg. Average is not good when you are playing UConn. They played two Big Ten teams close in the early part of the season, losing 68-62 to Minnesota and 60-58 to Illinois. They only lost to South Florida by four. Still losses, but it does show they can play well on occasion. They are coming off a hammering by Temple, who must have felt some freedom to operate after the squeeze UConn put on them the game before.

UConn is coming off a win against Cincinnati, celebrating Geno and CD's 900th win. It was quite the celebration. They have now won 20 consecutive games and lead the country in so many categories, the list is too large to put here.

 Game Analysis

Memphis has four players over 6' that will see time. The problem is none of them are over 6'1". This should mean a big game for Stewart if she posts hard and Tuck should score at will as well. Memphis has one big scorer and she is a terrific player.  Ariel Hearn was 1st team all AAC last year and leads Memphis in scoring at 16 ppg. But there are really no other threats and we all know what happens when UConn shuts down the top scorer.

Memphis only takes around 14 three point shots per game. The problem is that they only make around 4 of them. UConn will not have to protect the perimeter except for not leaving Hearn open. She has taken almost 50% of their threes. She has a decent percentage from deep at 36%. Which means the rest of the team shoots 24%.

There are startling differences in the offensive numbers between the two teams.

UConn has seven out of their eight players shooting over 50% from the field with Chong the only one not there at 46%. Memphis has no one shooting over 50% from the field. They only have 3 players shooting over 40%. And they only have 2 players shooting better than Chong.

UConn has only one player with  negative assist/turnover numbers, Stokes with 20 assists and 22 turnovers. Memphis has only one player that doesn't have negative assist/turnover numbers, Brea Elmore with 18 assists and 18 turnovers.

Memphis is an average team with one really good players. UConn will do whatever they want. Just a practice game to work on things for Monday.

Final Prediction

Geno will work on a lot of things he feels he wants to do against South Carolina. And I don't think he will hold back much now that he is not playing against a former assistant coach. If the bench plays like they did in the last game, this could be in the 60 point range. I'll go with that prediction.
