My UConn/Cincinnati II Post Game Report is out.

Also, in the UConn News Section I linked UConncat's great write up about the Geno Show from February 2nd. Be sure to check it out.

I've compared the front courts for UConn and South Carolina and while the Gamecock are strong up front, I gave UConn the advantage. So, how do the backcourts compare??

UConn starts Jefferson and Nurse. South Carolina starts Mitchell and Sessions.

Coming off the bench for UConn at the guard position is Chong. For South Carolina, they bring Roy and Cuevas off the bench.

So, now we know the players, lets look at the stats.

    UConn

    Jefferson - 26 mpg, 11.4 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 4.6 apg, 55.8 fg%, 50.9 3pt%, 78.9 ft%,101-34 A/TO, 53 stls
    Nurse - 24.9 mpg, 11.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 3.3 apg, 54.1 fg%, 46.5 3pt%, 67.1 ft%, 72-36 A/TO, 40 stls
    Chong - 19.9 mpg, 6.2 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.8 apg, 47.2 fg%, 39.3 3pt%, 70.6 ft%, 40-23 A/TO, 12 stls

    Total - 70.8 mpg, 29.1 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 9.7 apg, 213/93 A/TO, 105 stls

    South Carolina

    Mitchell - 27.9 mpg, 14.9 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.8 apg, 51.9 fg%, 47.1 3pt%, 83.6 ft%, 58-38 A/TO, 38 stls
    Sessions - 21.7 mpg, 4.1 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.1 apg, 36.9 fg%, 21.1 3pt%, 55.2 ft%, 65-28 A/TO, 45 stls
    Roy - 15.4 mpg, 4.5 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 2.7 apg, 41.3 fg%, 37.3 3pt%, 50.0 ft%, 53-24 A/TO, 6 stls
    Cuevas - 15 mpg, 6.2 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 1.9 apg, 39.5 fg%, 24.5 3pt%, 80.6 ft%, 39-30 A/TO, 27 stls

    Total - 80.0 mpg, 29.7 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 11.5 apg, 215/120 A/TO, 116 stls

Based on what I have seen so far this season, I'm not confident that Chong, Roy or Cuevas will see extended minutes. If the game is tight, Geno has shown that he will shrink the lineup. And so has Staley.

Saying that, I do think that the South Carolina guards other than Mitchell are not big offensive threats and Chong's defense has improved, so 10-15 minutes if probable.

Roy will see a few minutes as well. I've seen her hit clutch three pointers and at 37%, she is the next best option to hit some to open up the inside for South Carolina.

Cuevas is a wild card. She is a very dynamic player but she has a little too much Simmons in her. She tries to do it all herself when she is on the court and against UConn, she might be a turnover machine. I've seen her get hot from the outside. But for the most part she has really struggle from deep. She is quick. Almost Jefferson quick. But I'm not sure she is ready for this game.

When you compare the starters, you really have two very effective players for UConn and one for South Carolina.

You pretty much know what you are going to get from Jefferson and Nurse. They both shoot the ball extremely well from the outside. And they both drive hard to the basket. Defensively, they are dominating on the ball. Jefferson uses her quickness and Nurse uses her strength, but both are equally effective.

Mitchell is a great player. She can hit the open three. She has a terrific pull up jumper. She can drive to the basket. She is great in the passing lanes disrupting the opponents offense. No doubt an all-American. Sessions? Not so much. She is good with the ball. She doesn't turn the ball over often and is a solid passer. But she can't get to the basket on her own and finish, and her outside shot is just awful. She has only made three pointers in 5 of their 21 games. Either she doesn't take any (3 games) or she doesn't make any (13 games). She is a good but not great defensive player.

So, who has the guard advantage? Based on the stats, it's hard not to say UConn. They shoot better, they take care of the ball better. I believe they defend better as well. Neither team has played against as good a defense than they will see on Monday. But I like UConn to be able to control Mitchell and after her, I'm not sure the South Carolina guards have enough to pick up the slack.

I think Temple must have felt like they got out of a straight jacket after playing against UConn in their last game. It was a career day as the Owls drained a program-record 15 three pointers in a 84-61 win over Memphis. They got a career-high 30 points out of freshman Alliya Butts who was 6-13 on threes and a career-best seven threes from Tyonna Williams.

    Ugly Game Of The Day

We had a true ugly game Wednesday night. Usually I pick one team in a game and spotlight them. But in this case we had two teams so deserved that I picked both of them.

Texas State defeated South Alabama 46-44. Texas State shot 31% from the field, 17% (3-18) on threes and 15 turnovers. Not to be outdone, South Alabama shot 28% from the field 20% (4-20) on threes. They did have only 9 TO's so they had that going for them.

So, congrats to the Bobcats and Jaguars for winning the UGGY! Two cats that didn't land on their paws in this game!
