DoggyDaddy's Dailies 3/11/16

Let me tell you, you are going to LOVE Kyla Irwin, UConn's 6'2" 2016 freshman forward. She is going to carve out space in the post, finish with great and varied post moves and step out and hit the three. Sound like Tuck? You bet.

Here is a great report. As a parent, I got all choked up watching the video.

Stewart ESPN Player of the year, Geno is ESPN Coach of the year, Katie Lou Samuelson is ESPN Freshman of the year. Clean sweep for the Huskies!

ESPN Awards

Of course the internet world is all abuzz about Samuelson winning the FOY. Now, I understand others having better statistical years, but it's not the ESPN/UConn love fest that many think it is. It's only the three ESPN experts, Creme, Voeple and Hays. So relax, all you Katie Lou haters, I'm pretty sure that the other FOY awards will be going to other players.

Perhaps the most amazing statistics in UConn's season, so far, are the following:

1. The free throw shooting of Gabby Williams, which improved from 46.2% last year to 77.1% this season. Success at the free throw line is about technique and practice. And more practice....

2. The leading offensive rebounder, on a team with Stewie, Tuck, Gabby and Butler, is a freshman, Napheesa Collier. Her 72 offensive boards are more that Stewie(63) and Gabby (65).

3. Katie Lou Samuelson's recent 3 point shooting is out of this world. In her last 8 games, KLS has made 27 threes on 52 attempts. That is 52%..!! In two of those games, she went 5-10 and 6-9.

4. UConn's defense has held opponents to only 607 baskets in 32 games. That is less than 19 baskets per game or less than 5 per period. The Huskies have created 679 turnovers, blocked 206 shots and held opponents to 33% shooting accuracy.

5. Despite returning 4 starters, Geno has used nine different starting lineups. Ten of the twelve players on the roster have started a game. Only Ekmark and Lawlor haven't. Seven players have started at least 9 games.
