DoggyDaddy's Dailies 3/7/16

******************************************************************************

Another fun day on the ship. But I have to pack my laptop Sunday night, so I will be real brief.

******************************************************************************

UConn looked as good as they have all year in the early part of the game against Tulane Sunday in their 82-35 win. The starters got plenty of rest in preparation for the game against South Florida Monday.

From David in Naples

Last night, the top 9 teams in the country played in their respective conference tournaments. Most importantly, UConn won and plays again today against Tulane. Not all the top nine teams advanced, however, and an interesting pattern emerged among the guards on these premier programs. Let's compare the shots taken with assists for the top guard on each team. For example, Moriah Jefferson took 7 shots against East Carolina and had 7 assists. UConn won easily.

#2 Notre Dame's guard L. Allen took 10 shots, but had 8 assists. N.D. beat an upstart Miami by 11 points. #3 South Carolina won easily over Kentucky by 30, and their top guard Tiffany Mitchell took 16 shots, while getting only 2 assists. Fortunately, she made 8 of the shots and Dozier, her back court mate, has 9 assists. #4 Baylor had a fairly easy win over Texas Tech and their guard Niya Johnson had 6 shots and 5 assists. In all three games, guards were distributing the ball and shooting when they had open shots. Three games, lots of assists, three victories.

That was not the case with #9 Ohio State, where the Buckeyes were trounced by #19 Michigan State by 19 points. At one point, Ohio State was down by 36 points. Their top guard, Kelsey Mitchell, took 18 shots and had only 3 assists. She missed 14 of those shots, including 10 three pointers. If you're not hot, pass the ball..!!  The other big upset was #7 Louisville getting beat by Syracuse 80-75. Two guards for Louisville, Briahanna Jackson and Asia Durr took 17 shots each. That is a combined 34 shots. Their assist total was 3, combined..!! In fact, Louisville had only 9 assists as a team.

By the way, the pattern works for lousy programs too.... Tennessee lost to #16 Mississippi State 58-48, and their top guard Diamond DeShields took 20 shots. She missed 12 and recorded only 1 assist. Teams that pass the ball, get assists. Teams that get assists, win. Simple. ;)
