Once again, the overrated SEC showed it's true colors in the first two games of the day for that conference.

4 seed Kentucky barely got by the 13 seed Belmont 73-70. Epps was terrific, but Belmont played their hearts out. They had won 21 straight coming into the tournament, so they know how to win and it showed. They actually led 36-35 at the half.

In the other game involving an SEC team, 11 seed Auburn needed a big fourth quarter to get as close as the final 14 point margin against 6 seed NCST. They were down as much as 26, 49-23 after three quarters. Yes, they had scored only 23 points after three quarters. I think North Carolina State took a nap the last five minutes. They were outscored 18-6 to end the game.

I'm sorry, but you don't think that Tulane could have done better than an Auburn team that lost 9 of its last 12 games and now 10 of its last 13?

The last SEC team of the day was 6 seed Missouri, who escaped with a 66-64 win over 11 seed South Florida. USF tied the score on a three pointer by Laksa with 3.3 seconds left in the game. But the Tigers scored on a put back with .6 seconds left to win the game. Another underperformance? I guess that is a matter of opinion.  But so far I'm underwhelmed with the SEC.

3 seed Maryland looks good in their 103-61 win over Bucknell. Brionna Jones was dominant in the paint with 25 points and 10 rebounds for another double-double. And Shatori Walker-Kimbrough had a team leading 28 points. Point Guard, Destiny Slocum had 7 assists and only 2 turnovers in this one. But she struggled from the field, shooting 2-8 and 0-3 on threes. Still, a nice start for the Terps on their possible march to a rematch with UConn.

Another great game was 2 seed Oregon State against 15 seed Long Branch State. The Beavers beat the 49ers 56-55 in a game that came right down to the wire. Boy, would that have screwed up a few brackets!!!

By David in Naples!!!!!

Two years ago, Women's basketball went to four 10 minute periods in place of two 20 minutes halves. As a result, it is easier to track scoring by 10 minute increments. The Mendoza Line for scoring in a period of 15 points was invented to measure offensive output. UConn has had very little difficulty scoring at least 15 points every period, failing only 11 times in 128 periods. Six of those 11 periods of below 15 point scoring, were in the 4th quarter of victories where Geno played subs to get experience. By contrast, opponents failed to reach the Mendoza Line 81 times in those 128 periods. Even Baylor and Notre Dame failed to score 15 points in a period twice each against the Huskies defense. ;)

Interestingly, this year UConn scored more points in the 3rd period (770) than in the 1st period (741). That did not happen last season. Two explanations for this are likely. First, Geno is a great "halftime adjustment" coach. The coaching staff quickly figures out what is working and what isn't and adjusts. The 2nd reason is conditioning. UConn is in better shape than opponents and therefore, better able to keep the pace of the game to their speed. Not surprisingly, opponents scored the most points this season in the 4th period (462), than in any other. Obviously, many starters were out and opponents had more success.

In the 1st period, UConn outscored opponents by 741 to 362 points. That means the bad guys scored 379 points less than the Huskies at the beginning of games. Divide that by 32 games and the average lead was almost 12 points at the end of one period. Certainly not a good winning formula for opponents. For the season so far, UConn has scored 2,772 points and given up only 1,722. That means the Huskies scored 1,050 more points than opponents. Divide that figure by 32 games and the average margin of victory was 32.8 points. :D

Watch on Saturday how many times UConn holds Albany below the Mendoza Line of 15 points in a period. 8-)

Go Huskies..!!
