DoggyDaddy's Dailies 6/1/16

My granddaughter had a great year at school!!!

****************************************************************************

Minnesota continues it's run on the record books with their 6 straight victory to start the season. Maya Moore had 25 points leading them to a 79-69 win. Tina Charles had 23 points and 11 rebounds, showing that she is the best power forward/center in the league. Can you imagine Moore and Charles on the same team. They would be something, huh.

The Lynx look close to unbeatable and I'm looking forward to the game against the undefeated LA Sparks led by the snub-inspired Candace Parker.

Kudos to The Hoard for all the hard work in covering the U-17 and U-18 USA teams with UConn commits and possible commits singled out. Great links in the UConn section!!

From Blue Star on UConn targets.

Megan Walker – 6-1 – Guard Chesterfield, VA
Walker reminded everyone taking in the USAB U18 Trials why she is considered the number one player in the country regardless of class. Walker was lighting it up from every angle imaginable. She was consistently elevating and stroking the midrange jumper. When Walking wasn’t knocking down her smooth jump shots, she was attacking off the bounce and finishing at the rack. Defensively, Walker was locking down her opponent causing havoc. It’s going to be hard keeping the nations top player off the USAB U18 roster.

Samantha Brunelle – 2019 – 6-2 – Forward – Ruckersville, Virginia

This young forward has already established herself among the elite in her class and her play so far in Colorado Springs is backing up that status. Sporting a combination of size, skills and instincts, Brunelle has the versatility that helps coaches at the next level sleep at night. A smooth stroke with a soft touch from deep forces defenders to be there on the catch. She’s shown some impressive drives off a deceptive shot fake and handles herself well on the way to the rim. Her movement in transition as well as on the cut in the halfcourt is fluid and with intent. As she matures physically and adds strength good things may turn into great results.

Charli Collier – 2018 – 6-4 – Post – Mont Belvieu, Texas

The evolution in Collier’s game continues and it’s producing results for the Texas native. A more focused effort in the low post has made her much more effective and created opportunities not only for herself but for teammates as well. Her ability to read situations and defenders is improving each time out. Her choices in both attacks and passing are quicker and more efficient than ever before. She’s finding looks both baseline side as well as into the middle and traffic. Collier will still take the perimeter look when it presents itself but is much more selective as to how to mix it into her offensive repertoire.

Christyn Williams – 2018 –5-9 – Guard – Little Rock, Arkansas

An athletic and strong guard, Williams has the attack that challenges any defender in transition or halfcourt sets. The lefthander is quick on the catch and has the acceleration with the ball to leave her match up scrambling to recover. Her ballhandling has a mix of changes as well as a step back that creates lines to the rim or separation for her jumper. Off the drive she can take it all the way to the rim but also elevates for a pull up on a dime. There’s no reservation on her part about taking it among the bigs and she’s productive on the shot, pass or getting to the line.

It's amazing that this "Candace Parker's Revenge Tour" theory is still going strong. According to the ESPN announcers, WNBA broadcasters and mostly WCBB fans, Parker is taking every opportunity to throw the decision to cut her from the Olympic roster in the committee's face. That this is motivating her to play better than ever.

You'd think she was playing at this superhuman level. But I guess folks just like a good controversy and just don't want it to end because it's just not true.

Now, don't get me wrong. She is playing very well. Like a WNBA all-star. Which she has been her entire career. But her playing skills were never said to be the reason she was cut. I won't rehash the entire affair. We all know that some folks just thought this was the worst thing in the history of the Olympics and WBB. And maybe it was. But I'd like to address the theory that she is somehow playing better because she was cut and if that is true, what that says about her.

One fan on a particular message board said this -

"I know there were lots of reasons posed for Candace Parker's being left off the Olympic roster at the time. But now that we're five games into the WNBA season, and Parker is ripping a tornado-like path through the league, can we now say that it's beginning to look as though the selection committee really blew it?

Parker is the fifth leading scorer with nearly 21 points a game, she's eighth in rebounds with 7.5, she's tenth in blocks, and twelfth in assists. She's outscoring another roster center, Griner; she's outscoring and out rebounding roster forward Tamika Catching; she's outscoring Seimone Augustus. And she's younger than Catchings. There were hints that Parker wasn't a "team player," though they selected McCaughtry, who has been benched for long periods with no obvious physical ailments.

Can we now say that the decision to leave Parker off the roster is looking pretty bad right now?"

Wow. Ripping a tornado-like path through the league? And he justifies that comment with her being eighth in rebounds? Tenth in blocks? Twelfths in assists? Pretty low tornado standards if you ask me. More like a tropical depression, emphasis on depression.

And why make up stuff about McCoughtry (at least spell her name right), that she has been benched for long periods? She has played 29, 29, 30, 29 and 35 minutes in her games this season. AND they play totally different positions.

Is Maya Moore trying to prove a point? Or is she just the best damn player in the world?

Other than a couple of more points in her season average and a higher three point percentage, after 5 games Parker is not playing any better than any other season. She has had better numbers in every other category. EVERY OTHER CATEGORY.

In comparative season stats, she is not even that much better, if at all than Breanna Stewart A ROOKIE has.

PPG Parker 20.8, Stewart 19.0
RPG Parker 7.8, Stewart 9.8
APG Parker 4.0 Stewart 2.8
BPG Parker 1.2 Stewart 1.7
SPG Parker 1.6 Stewart 2.0
TO   Parker 2.4 Stewart 1.5

Stewart is leading in minutes, so it impacts the numbers in Stewarts favors but still. Tornado Parker has similar numbers to the rookie Stewart.

Now, if she actually IS playing harder and better this season because she is pissed off? That would be pretty pathetic. I mean, shouldn't she always play her best. Do you think Maya Moore needs motivation like that to play hard? It's all about me.....me.....me with Parker. It always has been and always will be.

I think that just about does it.

If you want to get excited about the future of UConn women's basketball, read the articles I linked in the UConn section about Lexi Gordon and Andrea Espinoza-Hunter, two of the 2017 recruits and another Mikayla Coombs, who has a UConn offer.

Three terrific players, and two are definitely coming to Storrs. Gordon appears to be the pied piper of HS girls basketball. They all want to be friends with her. The future is so bright.

I did watch the Seattle/Washington game late Thursday night and what a fun comeback by the Storm, falling short in an 84-82 final.

Breanna had her best game in her brief WNBA career with 25 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals and 4 blocks. Her defense is starting to be a difference maker for Seattle, but it wasn't enough for the Storm to get the win. Sue Bird had a terrific game as well with 17 points and 5 assists. You can see her trying to lead this young team, constantly telling her teammates where to go and what to do.

Stewie had her entire game going. She had one of her patented two hand blocks on one Mystic player. She had her hands in the passing lanes all night long. She made STRONG drives to the basket, absorbing the contact and finishing at the rim. She hit 3-5 threes as well. Great game to watch!
