Straight from the Dog

I linked an article about Big East power rankings. I don't mean to be nasty, but is the writer a blithering idiot?

They have UConn no. 1. I'm ok with that...lol.

No. 2 is Creighton and No. 3 is Marquette.

Creighton is 7-2 and Marquette is undefeated. And Marquette just beat Creighton.

So, why is Creighton 2 and Marquette 3? What a dope.

Undefeated Watch

A few days ago, I reported that there were 19 undefeated teams this season. Four days later the count is down to… Drum roll… 18.

Still too many to talk about all of them.

When I last reported, there were three teams tied for first place with 10 – 0 records. Only one of them has played a game since then — Cal Baptist, who beat Pepperdine by three points to claim sole possession of first place with 11 consecutive wins. As before, remember that their current streak includes three gains from last season.

The two other teams with 10 – 0, Texas Tech and Texas did not play, but second-place is getting crowded, with NC State, Washington, and TCU all winning, so there are now five teams waiting for Cal Baptist to stumble.

Will they stumble? They beat Pepperdine ranked 255 by 3 points, and then next to opponents are stronger. Cal Baptist is favored in each of them, but I think they’re going to stumble in the near future despite playing triple digit ranked teams.

Texas beat Arizona on Wednesday, their toughest challenge prior to Baylor in February.

Texas Tech also plays on Wednesday, but they were favored by 27. They won by 41.The next serious challenge is Oregon State who is favored to win.

NC State should be able to take care of business until a serious challenge at Virginia Tech in early January.

Surprising Washington has an easy game on Saturday but then a major challenge when they play at Louisville on 20 December.

TCU has a few easy games than a somewhat more challenging game against BYU December 30th but a very serious challenge against Baylor on 3 January.

Milestone watch

• Aaliyah Edwards has 1340 career points after the North Carolina game. She is in 39th place. She needs 25 points to catch Charde Houston.

• Nika Mühl had 466 assists after the Ball State game. She is in sole possession of 18th place. She needs 9 to tie Svetlana Abrosimova.

• Paige Bueckers reached the 1000-point milestone, early in the second half in the game against North Carolina. The two points broke the halftime tie, and were the start of a UConn run. Paige ties Maya Moore reaching the milestone in 55 games, the fewest of any UConn player.

I doubt any fan of the Huskies would be surprised to learn Paige leads the team in scoring with 178 points. What about the lesser known statistical categories? Paige can't do everything, right? Here we go:

1. Blocked shots - Well, actually Paige is tied for the lead with 9 blocked shots w/ Aubrey.
2. Steals - Gotta be Nika or KK in the lead, right? Nope, Paige leads with 18. KK and Aaliyah are 2nd with 16.
3. Made Free Throws - Paige again, with 32. Aubrey is 2nd with 21 and Liya is 3rd at 20.
4. Made field goals - Paige with 65 is first, again... Aaliyah is close at 61 made baskets.
5. Made 3 point baskets - Paige at 16. Q is 2nd at 11, Nika third at 10.
6. Minutes played - Nika is tops at 288 minutes. Paige is 3rd at 258. Wait, that means Paige is leading in all those stats without playing the most minutes...? Wow..! ;)

Paige 2.0 is amazing & apparently she is still recovering. Hang in there Husky fans, the best is still to come.

Go Paige, Go Huskies..!!

SPIDER STATS

Plus one for every assist block point rebound and steal. I don’t add extra for offensive rebounds as it already seems to favor the bigs. Minus one for every missed shot (2, 3 or foul), turnover or foul committed.

We have Paige and they don’t!

UConn 74 North Carolina 53.

Paige 29, Aaliyah 16, Aubrey 13, Ashlynn 8, Nika 8, Qadence 1, KK 1, Ice -2.

Year: Paige 169, Aaliyah 138, Aubrey 115, Nika 73, KK 62, Ashlynn 41, Qadence 28, Ice 4.

Year per minute: Paige .65, Aubrey .55, Aaliyah .50, Qadence.27, Ashlynn .27, KK .27, Nika .25, Ice .03.
