UConn takes on Ball State in a game we all hope will reignite UConn on both sides of the basketball. It's been a tough few weeks.
This is a special game for Nika and her parents as they play Nika's little sister Hana. It's amazing that two young ladies from Croatia come to America to play college basketball and get to go against each other in a game. Wow!!
A quick aside on Nika. I'm so happy she came to UConn. She is a delightful young woman who has grown up before our eyes. I appreciate her hard work and hard play. And I'm going to miss her when she leaves.
Now back to the game. Ball State is a typical lower level team that a typical UConn team would beat by 50 points. But as we know, this isn't a typical UConn team. However, the players have been beaten up by playing the No. 2, 3 and 5 ranked teams. What a difficult schedule for a team that is not the team they started the season with.
I mentioned this yesterday but Geno kinda called out Paige for her most recent performance and I just have a feeling she will take that to heart. Look for a big game for her. And Ball State has no size to counter Aaliyah or Ice. Or even Aubrey. The height advantage should yield plenty of second opportunities.
I'm hopeful the freshmen will see the fruit of their hard work come to fruition and like the Huskies against the Cardinals. Massey has UConn as a 20 point favorite. I believe it will be more.
UConn by 35+.

This kid is unreal. 17 weeks p-p. waking up at 6:30 when she doesn’t have to, to train when she doesn’t have to, to play in a tourney she doesn’t have to, to prove something to herself & others that she doesn’t have to, just because she’s Lou.

I think they have both teams misranked. AP does have West Virginia on the list of teams getting votes, but they are sitting there with only a single vote, which roughly places them at 42. Massey now has them at 24, but they just moved up 7 after beating Penn State, Sso probably were 31 before yesterday's results which is a difference of 11 places. That one's kinda understandable but the more egregious issue is Penn State.
Massey has Penn State at 48. He just move them down 4 spots so before the West Virginia game they would've been at 44. That doesn't remotely sound like a ranked team.
They were ranked and I tried to figure out why.
They have eight wins. Six of them are to triple digit teams with a couple in the 300s and the strongest of the six being St. John's at 144. Not resume type wins. They do have two wins over Kansas and Oklahoma State so middling P5 teams, but both of which are probably the wrong side of the bubble looking in. While you don't have to have a win over a ranked team to get ranked, you ought to beat someone who has a prayer of being ranked.
Curiously, my best guess is that they were ranked because of a loss. Penn State lost USC by a single point in the Bahamas. With USC being one of the new darlings of the cognoscenti, I'm guessing that game elevated the stature of Penn State in the view of the voters.
As further evidence, Penn State wasn't even among the teams receiving votes in week three, so it wasn't the wins over Kansas and Oklahoma State. They lost to USC on 22 November, and started receiving votes the next week. Even that doesn't fully explain it because they followed up that loss with wins over Providence and Radford ranked 171 and 333 respectively, which hardly justifies moving up into the ranked category.
• Nika Mühl had 458 assists after the Texas game. She recorded 6 in the Kansas game bringing her total to 456. She is in sole possession of 18th place. She needs 17 to tie Svetlana Abrosimova.
• Paige Bueckers has 966 career points, so needs 34 to reach the 1000 point milestone.
