GO UCONN!!!!!

**************************************************

HELP!!!!! I'm flying up from Florida for a week and I'd like to get  tickets for the Providence game at the XL center on Wednesday January 10th. My 8 year old grandsonLogan is now into basketball and I'd love to expose him to the wonderful world of UConn women's basketball.

I'd love lower level and of course I'd pay for the tickets. Two would be great. Four would be better.

So, can anyone help a Doggydaddy out??? Please email me at my personal email. Markwolfberg@yahoo.com.

Thanks in advance!!

UConn takes on Ball State in a game we all hope will reignite UConn on both sides of the basketball. It's been a tough few weeks.

This is a special game for Nika and her parents as they play Nika's little sister Hana. It's amazing that two young ladies from Croatia come to America to play college basketball and get to go against each other in a game. Wow!!

A quick aside on Nika. I'm so happy she came to UConn. She is a delightful young woman who has grown up before our eyes. I appreciate her hard work and hard play. And I'm going to miss her when she leaves.

Now back to the game. Ball State is a typical lower level team that a typical UConn team would beat by 50 points. But as we know, this isn't a typical UConn team. However, the players have been beaten up by playing the No. 2, 3 and 5 ranked teams. What a difficult schedule for a team that is not the team they started the season with.

I mentioned this yesterday but Geno kinda called out Paige for her most recent performance and I just have a feeling she will take that to heart. Look for a big game for her. And Ball State has no size to counter Aaliyah or Ice. Or even Aubrey. The height advantage should yield plenty of second opportunities.

I'm hopeful the freshmen will see the fruit of their hard work come to fruition and like the Huskies against the Cardinals. Massey has UConn as a 20 point favorite. I believe it will be more.

UConn by 35+.

Last weekend was the Art Turner Memorial Showcase. For many teams, it was the start of their season. Representatives from several universities were on hand to watch the action, including UConn. Two players who are on UConn's radar caught the eye: 2026 hopefuls Olivia Vukosa (#25) from Chris the King NY (23) and Jordyn Jackson(#5) from Sidwell Friends DC (5). Both teams played two matches with identical 1-1 records. For the showcase, 18 teams from six states were present, 4 of them on the ESPN rankings, 19 ESPN-ranked players were also present. The showcase offered a really good quality of teams. Results for Chris the King: 59-52 loss to St.John's DC and 70-44 win over Georgetown Visitation DC. For Sidwell Friends: 62-51 win against McDonogh MD (19) and 52-49 loss against Westtown PA.

Straight from the Dog

No. 8 Colordao won against UT Arlington Tuesday night 95-74. A good win by 21 points. It makes you think this Colorado team is pretty darn good. Well.....there is more to the story.

UT Arlington is 1-8 this season. The only other ranked team they have played was No. 10 at the time Texas. A 21 point loss? Nope. More like a 46 point loss. They lost by 29 to Grand friggin' Canyon!!

So that 21 point win? Meh.

They have won all their games except against at the time No. 10 NC State who they lost to by 18 points. The games they won? Against Massey rated 332, 49, 137, 105, 100, 173, 154, and 265. Weak!

They are pretty much living off their week one win over at the time No. 1 LSU. This LSU team was not ready to play.  They had too many new pieces and the soon to be imploding Angel Reese.

They still have to play No. 11 Utah, No. 9 Stanford, No. 2 UCLA and No. 6 USC. I believe they will lose 3 or 4 of those games.

Congrats to Katie Lou Samuelson and her USA teammates on winning the FIBA 3X3 Americup title!!!

A lot of aricles, tweets and videos, so I'll just let them tell the story.

The West Virginia win over Ranked Penn State while technically an upset, it looks more like a bad ranking.

I think they have both teams misranked. AP does have West Virginia on the list of teams getting votes, but they are sitting there with only a single vote, which roughly places them at 42. Massey now has them at 24, but they just moved up 7 after beating Penn State, Sso probably were 31 before yesterday's results which is a difference of 11 places. That one's kinda understandable but the more egregious issue is Penn State.

Massey has Penn State at 48. He just move them down 4 spots so before the West Virginia game they would've been at 44. That doesn't remotely sound like a ranked team.

They were ranked and I tried to figure out why.

They have eight wins. Six of them are to triple digit teams with a couple in the 300s and the strongest of the six being St. John's at 144. Not resume type wins. They do have two wins over Kansas and Oklahoma State so middling P5 teams, but both of which are probably the wrong side of the bubble looking in. While you don't have to have a win over a ranked team to get ranked, you ought to beat someone who has a prayer of being ranked.

Curiously, my best guess is that they were ranked because of a loss. Penn State lost USC by a single point in the Bahamas. With USC being one of the new darlings of the cognoscenti, I'm guessing that game elevated the stature of Penn State in the view of the voters.

As further evidence, Penn State wasn't even among the teams receiving votes in week three, so it wasn't the wins over Kansas and Oklahoma State. They lost to USC on 22 November, and started receiving votes the next week. Even that doesn't fully explain it because they followed up that loss with wins over Providence and Radford ranked 171 and 333 respectively, which hardly justifies moving up into the ranked category.

Milestone watch

• Aaliyah Edwards has 1306 career points after the Texas game. She passed Morgan Tuck and Laura Lishness to move into 39th place. She needs 59 points to catch Charde Houston.

• Nika Mühl had 458 assists after the Texas game. She recorded 6 in the Kansas game bringing her total to 456. She is in sole possession of 18th place. She needs 17 to tie Svetlana Abrosimova.

• Paige Bueckers has 966 career points, so needs 34 to reach the 1000 point milestone.

Here are some facts to hopefully calm a few fans down and put the season in perspective.

1. UConn is 4-3 and the 3 teams they lost to are a combined 25-0 and ranked #2, #3 and #5 in the country, in one poll.

2. Geno has started 9 different players in just 7 games. Coaching for March.

3. The 3 true freshmen have played 326 minutes total. That is 23% of the total minutes played.

4. Add in Ice Brady to the freshmen and the total minutes played goes up to 439, almost 1/3rd of the minutes played.

5. Nika is shooting 40% from three range (6-15) and 68% from inside the arc (15-22). She is #1 in assists (30), #4 in rebounds (26) and #3 in offensive rebounds (10).

6. Paige did not shoot until 5:11 of the 1st period against Texas. UConn was down 17-9 at that point. She made the shot and followed with a 3 pt basket 35 seconds later. That will change.

7. Aaliyah has 23 turnovers. That is almost 1/4 of the total for the Huskies. She will fix that.

8. Last season, Dorka averaged 9.9 rebounds per game & Lou scored 15.5 pt per game. Replacing those totals has been hard.

9. Ice has 17 rebounds, so does KK Arnold. Qadence and Ashlynn have 21 combined. That will improve.

10. KK has made 60% of her 3 point shots, but taken only 5. She will shoot more threes, as will Q and Ashlynn.

No quit in this team so far this season. No reason for fans to give up either. Lots of great games still ahead. (In my opinion.)
Go Huskies..!!

STATS

Plus one for every assist block point rebound and steal. I don’t add extra for offensive rebounds as it already seems to favor the bigs. Minus one for every missed shot (2, 3 or foul), turnover or foul committed.

Texas 70 UConn 54

Aaliyah 21, Paige 13, KK 7, Ashlynn 3, Nika 3, Qadence 2, Aubrey 1, Ice -2.

Play your 8 players 25 minutes each against Ball State and see what happens.

Losses to undefeated Massey 2, 3, 5 rated teams.
